Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

In partnership with the United States Marine Corps, the Town is collecting toys to help families impacted by the COVID-19 economic crisis and those less fortunate throughout the community during the upcoming holiday season. In addition to the ‘CruiseThru’, collection boxes are located at Town facilities through December 14th. Originating in 1976 when then Massachusetts Governor, Michael Dukakis, declared the first week of November Adoption Week in the state, it was then formally recognized in 1984 when President Gerald Ford signed a proclamation declaring it National Adoption Week. To further increase adoption awareness, in 1995 President Bill Clinton expanded the week to the full month of November, and beginning in 2000, the Saturday before Thanksgiving was declared National Adoption Day. Today, it’s estimated that seven million Americans are adoptees and that one hundred million have direct experience with adoption in their immediate family either having adopted or placed a child for adoption or being an adoptee themselves. While the purpose of National Adoption Month and National Adoption Day is to draw attention to the importance of all adoption-related issues, 2021’s focus is on the critical issues surrounding the adoption of children in foster care. Numbers vary by source, but it’s generally agreed that there are over 400,000 children currently in foster care in the United States (as of 2019, 16,000 of them were in New York
State). The average age of those children is eight years and there are slightly more boys in foster care than girls. While approximately half of them will ultimately be returned to one or both of their parents or to a caregiver, another twentyfive percent find adoptive homes, typically with their foster parents. At any given point in time, however, an additional one-hundred-and-twenty-thousand foster children are in situations where they cannot be returned to their families and are therefore awaiting adoption. Again, statistics vary somewhat, but it’s agreed that the longer a child remains in care awaiting adoption, the less “attractive” they become to potential parents. While the average time for a child to be in foster care is somewhat over one year, it’s estimated that as many as sixty percent of these children remain in foster care from two to five years and that twenty percent may remain in foster care for more than five years. Roughly twenty thousand of them, depending on the state in which they’re being cared for, “age out” of foster care, having reached the age of eighteen or twenty-one years without having been adopted.

Members of the North Massapequa Fire Department (NMFD) hosted their 47th Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade on Halloween, much to the delight of residents. “The Rag-A-Muffin Parade is always special, but this year has added meaning because the pandemic forced us to cancel the festivities last year,” explained Chief of Department James M. Maroldo. “For the past 47 years, we have hosted this outstanding event and it has brought tremendous joy to our community’s families, and especially our young people.”

Bethpage Turkey Drive 2020 Volunteers The Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit the Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 19, 2021, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The 13th annual food drive will include a no-contact donation car drive-through which will enable community residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles. Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass containers). The Bethpage Turkey Drive will take place at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.
For those unable to make a donation on November 19th, or would rather show their support online, Bethpage is accepting online monetary donations at http:// www.lovebethpage.com/ turkeydrive, beginning in November, through Friday, December 31st. Donations can also be made at any Bethpage branch. “2020 was a recordbreaking year for the turkey drive,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “We hope Long Islanders continue to show their support again this year as the need on Long Island is still great. Since the first Bethpage Turkey Drive was organized in 2009, hundreds of community volunteers have come out to assist in the collection of more than 40,000 turkeys and over 168,000 pounds of food, which were then given to Long Island families facing hardship in time for the holidays. Island Harvest Food Bank has seen an increase in the requests for food and support services among the 400 community-based agencies it serves. About 70,000 individuals receive food assistance from the Island Harvest Food Bank network each week.

Theater At Berner Returns With ‘Descendants’
Berner Middle School’s Theatre Box Players will stage its first show in two years with the upcoming production of “Descendants.” The musical is based upon the 2015 Disney fantasyadventure comedy film. We have just come off of our Holiday Fair on Sunday, November 14th, chaired by Robin Hepworth and Janice Talento. It was a wonderful event, and we were all sold out of vendor spaces. My thanks to both Robin and Janice and their committee for a great job. We are looking forward to the November 18th meeting at Smokin’ Al’s, as we will be honoring all of the various veterans organizations in Massapequa. Chairman Sal Polito promises a great time for all attendees. We will start at 12:00 Noon like always. Thanks to Patty Orzano and her committee for all of their hard work on the Food Drive. Toys for Tots will also kick off as we look forward to a great Christmas season for all. We will also have the Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony on Broadway at Klestinec Park (by James Funeral Home) on Saturday, December 4th at 6:00 PM. Please bring all of your family members and kids to attend and enjoy the music, entertainment from local dance studios, and a visit from Santa as we light up the community for the holidays. Amy Recco and her committee are doing a great job, and we look forward to a fun evening.

A Touching Tribute To Veterans To mark Veterans Day, students and staff at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are honoring the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces with a writing campaign and a wall of
honor. Students made cards and wrote letters to veterans to thank them for their service, many with personalized messages of gratitude. The cards and letters were sent to several organizations including the American
Legion, Beacon House, Long Island State Veterans Home and Northport Veterans Hospital. Several classes also made digital presentations. More than 100 veterans were featured on a wall of honor near the gymnasium.
Students and staff were invited to submit a picture of a family member who served in the military, along with his or her name and branch of service.
