The 10th Annual Massapequa Park Turkey Trot, benefitting YES Community Counseling Center, will be held on Saturday, November 23 at Brady Park. The event has become an annual tradition, with hundreds of runners participating in the 5K and Youth Fun Run. There will be bountiful refreshments, prizes and raffles at the finish line. There are many ways that individuals just like you can get involved with Long Island Cares. You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Please email licvolunteer@ licares.org for more information. Additionally, they are holding their annual Adopt-a-Family Thanksgiving Food Drive! This project involves others to volunteer their time to gather and bag items for families in need so they can have a filling Thanksgiving. This is the perfect opportunity for families, groups and students to get involved in their community. Long Island Cares has a goal of reaching
5,000 families and they need your help to reach that goal! They ask that you provide the following specific items in order to provide a Long Island family with a full Thanksgiving meal: - 4 cans of vegetables - 4 cans of fruit - 1 can of pumpkin or pie filling - 1 box/bag of stuffing - 1 box of mashed potato mix - 1 jar/can/packet of gravy - 1 can of cranberry sauce - 1 box of dessert mix (cake/cookie/ muffin) - OPTIONAL: Turkey (please put in a separate bag if you wish to donate this) Donations should be double bagged or in a reusable bag and delivered to their office located at 10 Davids Drive Hauppauge, NY 11788. All donations must be delivered no later than November 20th and must be dropped off between the hours of 8:30AM and 3:30PM Monday - Friday. Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Young artists at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned how to create three-dimensional work using only two dimensions. For an optical
illusion project, fourth graders learned techniques to give the appearance of depth. Students first studied the work of British artist Bridget Riley, known
for her optical illusion masterpieces. Then, under the direction of art teacher Marissa Sondo, they used curved lines and shading to make 3D forms on a 2D surface.
Toys For Tots Collection Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone joined with Town Councilman Thomas P. Hand to announce the kick-off of this year’s “Toys for Tots” Collection Drive, which will run through December 12th, in an effort to collect new, unwrapped toys to be used as gifts for children throughout the community. “Under the direction of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, the Toys for Tots Drive follows a mission to help ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness,”
Councilman Hand said. “By helping those in need experience the wonderful embrace of the holiday season, contributor’s will get to play an active role in bringing happiness to one of our nation’s most valuable resources for the future, our children,” Councilman Macagnone said. The Workings Of Government
Seniors at Massapequa High School dive deep into the workings of government as part of the social studies curriculum, and recently they got to learn from someone with first-hand knowledge. Congressman Peter King, who lives in neighboring Seaford and represents the district that includes Massapequa, spoke to students from Advanced Placement United States Government and Comparative Government classes on Nov. 4. Congressman King was invited to share his knowledge of Congress and the inner workings of government, as his tenure in the House of Representatives spans four different presidents. “His insight into how government works and into present-day issues, as well as the coverage of those issues, is worthwhile for our AP government students,” Dr. Trapani said. “It’s important for them to have an opportunity to meet their representative and ask him questions about issues that matter to them.”

Friends Earn Top Ranks Five years ago, Talia Cartafalsa and Alexa Mangione entered Berner Middle School together from different sides of the Massapequa School District and quickly became friends. Little did they know that they would lead similar academic paths en route to becoming the top ranked graduates of Massapequa High School’s Class of 2020. Talia, with a grade point average of 100.125, was named the valedictorian while Alexa’s 99.8 GPA earned her the distinction of salutatorian. “I’m grateful,” Talia said, “and I’m proud that it’s the two of us because we’ve been friends since 7th grade.” Talia got her start on the north end of the Massapequa at Lockhart Elementary School while Alexa attended Birch Lane Elementary School, the district’s southernmost building. Separately,
they began building the foundation that would eventually lead them to the top of a senior class with more than 550 students. Together, they did their best work, inspiring each other as they completed work in rigorous collegelevel courses. During their high school careers, both scholars enrolled in 10 Advanced Placement classes. It wasn’t just in class that Talia and Alexa made their mark. They were two active citizens in the Massapequa school community. Talia was the stage manager for the Massapequa High School and Berner Middle School musical productions, a member of the French Club and French and National honor societies. Additionally, she worked as the assistant to the director for the Summer Fine Arts program. Alexa was president of the Visions art and literary
magazine, a member of the Spanish Club and the Art, Spanish and National honor societies. She has also been a student assistant in the Summer Fine Arts program, and this past year supported young artists in ceramics, sculpture and printmaking classes. Although she is considering majoring in information systems or applied mathematics in college, Alexa said that art and literature are among her passions and it’s the study of those areas that have been her favorite high school classes. Talia, as begins to explore her college options, said she is planning to study either earth science or environmental science. She explained that she has enjoyed the challenge of her high school science classes and learning more about the world around her.
