With Gaylynn Innes’ direction as their den leader, the boys made a scarecrow with materials found at camp, and earned an award for “best scarecrow.” A great time was had by all at this weekend retreat.

As a child growing up in Massapequa and playing in all Massapequa Parks, Marina Sapeta enjoyed the swing the most. As a senior in Plainedge High School, she looked back to her childhood and never remembered seeing any wheelchair accessible swings. Not long ago, she saw a 4 year-old child in a wheelchair just watching his siblings play and enjoy the park while he sat next to his mom. This motivated Marina to have this become her Senior Girl Scout Gold Award Project. After some research, she found that 14% of kids in the U.S. are in wheelchairs. She wanted to see how many accessible play things there were for them and was surprised that there really wasn’t much to offer. Last year, she brought her ideas to Assemblyman

Joseph Saladino’s Marine Expo and had the visitors vote on the best swing to install at a local Massapequa Town Park. With the help of Town of Oyster Bay Park Dept George Baptista and Sarah Cimino, they started to get to work on planning the installation at John J. Burns Park. “I was so excited and it was such a relief that it all came together,” said Marina, on seeing her vision come to life. “It felt good that I accomplished my original goals and that I was able to following in my Pop-Pops footsteps in giving back to the community.” Family and friends gathered to celebrate the installation and red ribbon cutting on October 24th along with Saladino, Senator Micheal Venditto and the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce President, who all had

Gold Award Project high praise for this 17 year-old visionary and awarded her several citations for her good work. Marina Sapeta the granddaughter of Mr. Joseph Basile, who was the Chamber of Commerce Past President and well loved by many in the Massapequa Community for all his volunteer efforts. This project is a testament to her grandfather and the community he loved. Her parents, Carla and Steve Sapeta, are so very proud of her dedication and commitment to her community and the Girls Scout Association. “The best part of this project is knowing that I have given at least one child the chance to play with their friends and family, and put a smile on their face,” says Marina.

I find it truly fascinating how individuals can come away with such varying perspectives on the same topic, time and time again. Whether it be politics, societal issues or even something so lighthearted as this very column, everyone is entitled to their opinion – it’s just interesting how that view is arrived upon. Intelligent argument is one thing; shameless bullying quite another. For some, there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. I suppose these polarizing issues are what make our world go ‘round. Discussion is the basis of everything, from school classrooms to kitchen tables to podiums
and soapboxes. Especially in this day and age of instant feedback, rarely can an opinion be expressed without an opposing argument cropping up almost immediately. Written forums are the best – or worst, as the case may be – since they afford people the anonymity of expressing often insulting, uneducated retorts. There is something about faceto-face conversation that affords a measure of respect, begrudging though it may be. Personally, I feel this world is full of enough tragedy and conflict without the need to touch on it in this column. South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers has always been a forum for celebrating our local school and community

Student Spotlight IF ONLY ALL OF LIFE’S DECISIONS WERE THIS EASY BY: JORDAN CIANCIULLI, SENIOR, ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL
For months, I’ve been agonizing over what will be one of the biggest choices of my life. During the fall, high school seniors from all over the world fill out their applications and make their college decisions. For me, it turned out to be an easy choice. I have decided to apply early decision to the University of Miami. Only time will tell if my dream of attending “The U” will become a reality. I am looking forward to potentially spending the next four years alongside my brother, who is currently a sophomore at the University of Miami. Although he transferred there - and I’m applying straight out of high school -
we both realize that Miami will provide opportunities for us that cannot be found anywhere else. The vast challenges and possibilities that can potentially be afforded to me by the University of Miami are enticing. I am excited to undertake the next chapter of my life, and I can only hope that chapter takes places in Coral Gables. When I attended the Manhattan Information Session on October 22nd, I was amazed by the presentation. The speakers detailed the financial aid process, the historic football dynasty and the stellar academic reputation associated with the University of Miami.
After the event, I had a chance to speak to Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions. He was happy to answer all the questions that I had regarding the admissions process and left me feeling comfortable about my choice to apply early decision. I was impressed with how knowledgeable and professional he was. I would recommend attending an information session like this to anyone interested in applying to institutions of higher education, and more specifically, The U. That evening truly sealed the deal; I want to be a Miami Hurricane in the fall of 2016.

Marking its 90th anniversary, Fairfield Elementary School — the first modern multiclass elementary school in Massapequa — was officially registered as a historical site by the Historical Society of the Massapequas. In celebration of this distinction, the school community, historical society members and alumni — some of whom have roots in Massapequa that go back six generations — came together to share the history of their beloved school and unveil a historical marker that was erected in front of the building on Massapequa Avenue. “We are truly honored to receive this prestigious designation and we are delighted that our students can be a part of this special day in Fairfield history,” said Fairfield Principal Lori Dano. Members of the Fairfield Elementary School band performed “Tea for Two,” a song released in 1925, the year the school was built, as some of the school’s first alumni welcomed the gesture by sweetly swaying in their chairs. Among them were Lillian Rumfield Bryson, fourth generation Massapequan who entertained the crowd with her family’s long history as Massapequa residents, and Wilma Diehl, a fifth generation Massapequan who went to Fairfield, graduated from the Massapequa School District and devoted her entire career to educating children in Massapequa. She taught at Fairfield Elementary School and retired as the first female Assistant Superintendent of Schools in 1986. The school was originally called the Massapequa School and served 79 K-8 students when it opened its doors in the fall of 1925. It became Fairfield Elementary School in 1953 and, today, 580 K-6 students are taught there. Superintendent of Schools Lucille F. Iconis spoke of
the school’s beauty, noting its original wood floors and fireplaces that make the building special. “It’s a school with a special history; a school with character that has kids with character,” she said. Student speakers presented historical facts about their school and community, pointing out famous people and milestones the year the building was built. After everyone was invited

to sing a rendition of the Fairfield School Spirit Song, the historical marker was unveiled amid cheers and applause. “It is a uniquely beautiful building and it looks the same as it did years ago,” said William Colfer, president of the Historical Society of the Massapequas. “It is very well maintained as are all the buildings in the district.”

Before Brittney was killed by a drunk driver only two days after high school graduation, she was always found helping some body, and even after she’s gone, she still is. display at the event. This year, art teacher Ellen Cervone selected Megan’s piece, which was based on the style of optical illusion artist Bridget Riley and Olivia’s piece, based on Georgia O’Keeffe’s distinctive style of painting enlarged flowers. A reception was held on
October 19th at the New York City Sheraton. “The entire Massapequa family is very proud of these two young artists,” said Mrs. Cervone. She said she encourages all young artists to do their very best and to keep “Art in their Heart!”

He then went on to become Vice President of a leading environmental consulting management firm on Long Island, and inevitably President and CEO of the National Environmental Management Associates Corp. Five years ago, Mr. Beck decided to bring his wealth of knowledge to Long Island schools and has taught in the Bayshore and Massapequa school districts before coming to Nassau BOCES. Ms. D’Alessio comes to her new position with a solid background in science education. At Good Counsel Academy High School in White Plains, she taught Living Environment, as well as Anatomy and Physiology, and her classes boasted a 100 percent passing rate on the Regents exam. She also taught Living Environment for Nassau BOCES Regional Summer School and has served as a Team Advisor for the Science Olympiad. At the Institute, she is part of the national Project Lead the Way initiative. Mr. Paolina began his educational career as a substitute teacher in the Baldwin and Syosset school districts. From there, he became a Regents Prep Instructor for the Rockville Centre UFSD, helping students to successfully pass the Regents Physics Exam. He went on to become a science teacher at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County. In addition to his responsibilities in the classroom, he headed the academy’s Science Club, and served as both a judge and liaison for the Long Island Science Engineering Fair.

Three new teachers were appointed this year to the faculty of the Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute, Long Island’s first science-centered high school. Bruce Beck of Farmingdale is teaching Advanced Placement Environmental Science, Principles of Engineering and Research; Paulette D’Alessio of West Babylon is teaching Living Environment at the Honors level, Introduction to Engineering and Research; and Derek Paolina of Baldwin is teaching Advanced Placement Physics and Research. The Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute is a pioneering educational program for select students from across Long Island who have demonstrated an interest and aptitude for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The curriculum surpasses the New York State common core and offers a challenging course of study in engineering, research, robotics, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. Students are taught by dually certified instructors and work directly with scientists, technicians, engineers and industry leaders from worldfamous institutions such as Brookhaven National and Cold Spring Harbor laboratories. “These three new teachers are a fine addition to our expert faculty,” said Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute Principal Jack Lenson. “I’m extremely impressed with their respective skill sets. Each of them has demonstrated a desire to improve professionally and a willingness to collaborate. “Never play with matches, be aware of hot surfaces and how to ‘stop, drop and roll’ if your clothing catches fire are just some of the fire safety tips the Massapequa Fire Department taught primary-grade students in the district during Fire Prevention Week. The firefighters
demonstrated the equipment they use when fighting fires and discussed how to prevent fires. They also stressed the importance of having fire alarms and family escape routes in case a fire starts. Students were encouraged to participate in the department’s fire safety poster contest.
Lesson on Immigration
Winners will have the opportunity to ride to school on a fire truck. The members of the fire department work with each of the schools every year to deliver these important and life-saving lessons to students. It is hoped that this program encourages families to create a fire safety plan at home.
Students from Brentwood UFSD and Uniondale UFSD came together to discuss the topic of immigration at the Teach Immigration Law and Policy Student Forum. Nassau BOCES in collaboration with the American Immigration Council and Street Law, Inc. were the hosts for this STUDENTS LEARN SAFETY - East Lake Elementary School students with members first-time event on Long Island. of the Massapequa Fire Department. The seventh-grade students from Lawrence Road Middle in Uniondale and ninth-graders from the Brentwood Freshman Center engaged in concurrent workshops about visas for immigrants and the President’s executive action regarding immigration. Students were led in the session by experts in the field, immigration attorneys and

More than 50 students worked in groups to learn deliberative dialogue as a way to discuss and examine immigration reform and issues in the upcoming presidential election. “The information the students are learning will effect change in their own community,” said April Francis, Lawrence Road Middle School Social Studies teacher. “This is an opportunity for project-based service learning. These students are motivated” said Brentwood English teacher Dr. Steve Burby. The American Immigration Council, a non-partisan non-profit, developed the Teach Immigration program in Long Island five years ago to empower educators
and students with the knowledge to teach immigration factually and critically. Using lessons based on current immigration law and policy, providing training on deliberations via their partnership with Street Law, Inc, a non-profit education organization, the program fosters critical thinking on immigration issues, promotes positive school culture and supports student-driven projects. Teachers interested in the program attended free trainings in the summer of 2015 and the fall of 2014 and were supplied with teaching materials and recommended activities. This partnership helps to educate students about immigration law and policy in relevant, engaging ways.
Winter Wonderland Students across the Diocese enjoyed a day off Friday so their teachers could attend the annual Diocesan Teacher’s Conference (DTC) at St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip. The DTC is a Professional Development event designed to enhance teacher’s skills, and provide them an opportunity to interact with their peers. Highlights of the conference included Dr. Kevin Sheehan’s talk on ‘Creating a Culture of Hope and Self Belief’.
Helping each student be his or her best is about instilling self-confidence, grit, and determination. Dr. Sheehan offered direct advice and provided teachers a web site to use as an ongoing resource to help them create a culture of hope in every classroom. Dr. Lina Gilic reminded teachers of their responsibility to differentiate their teaching based of the specific needs of each student in their classroom with an emphasis on helping those with special learning needs
in a presentation titled Identifying What is Special in the Catholic School Classroom. Teachers and Principals also were addressed by the new Superintendent, Dr. Kathleen Walsh, they visited with vendors of educational products and services, and they got the opportunity to sit and talk with their fellow teachers. Ultimately the goal is to help the staff at each school further develop and deliver the special characteristics that make Catholic school different and better.

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand recently announced $1,887,950 in federal funding over the next five years for Nassau Community College. This funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO Student Support Services program. NCC will use the grant to provide academic support services to over 450 students with disabilities. The installment for the first budget period is $377,588.
The College will provide students with disabilities personal academic advisement, career counseling, disability advocacy, financial advisement, and additional assistance with reading, math and writing. “There is no better federal investment than one that helps students succeed, and that’s why this five-year Department of Education grant is so important to Nassau Community College,” said Senator Schumer. “Nassau Community College’s TRIO

Record Breaking Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) hosted its Fourth Annual East End Walk for Alzheimer’s and Fall Festival in Westhampton Beach on Saturday, October 17th. Thirty-two teams and 376 individuals came out in support of Alzheimer’s research and awareness. This year’s event featured
a pre-walk butterfly release in honor of those who are suffering from Alzheimer’s or have lost their battle with the disease. The walk wrapped with the annual Fall Festival. Hundreds of participants, volunteers and vendors turned out for the event, which raised nearly $75,000 in support of
Alzheimer’s programs and services for local families. It is the largest amount ADRC has ever raised at its Westhampton Beach walk, exceeding the event’s goal by nearly $25,000. Opening ceremonies were led by Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director and CEO of ADRC, who served as the
MC, and a color guard by retired members of the United States Navy, followed by a performance by the USO Liberty Bells from New York City and a presentation from Nancy Burner, Esq., of Nancy Burner and Associates, the event sponsor. After the walk, participants enjoyed a
