Connecting Military Parents And Children, One Story At A Time

(StatePoint) For deployed service members who are also parents, being away from their kids is often the hardest part of the job. This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families. One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours, the most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope. Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program.

Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members visit participating USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones. Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their

creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck

all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room. Two Massapequa High School seniors were among approximately 16,000 students nationwide to be named 2022 National

Merit Semifinalists. The distinction was awarded to Matt McAuley and Hayley Tan by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Matt and Hayley were named semifinalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program based on their performance on

the PSAT. They now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for a chance to earn one of 7,500 scholarships, which will be offered in the spring. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents fewer than 1% of high school seniors, including the highest scorers in each state. The two students are very active at Massapequa High School, enrolling in challenging college-level courses and taking part in

Matt is presently taking Advanced Placement Calculus and German, and is a member of the German Club, German Honor Society, Key Club and varsity wrestling and cross-country teams. In college, he plans to major in computer science. Hayley belongs to the Spanish Honor Society and the GSA. This year she is taking AP Calculus and AP Spanish, and wants to pursue a degree in neuroscience when she

attends college next year. “I’m very proud,” Matt said of being named a National Merit Semifinalist. “You get to see the fruits of your labor paying off.” Added Hayley, “It’s a great honor. This achievement shows that my work is paying off more than I thought.” Matt and Hayley are longtime academic companions, having both attended McKenna Elementary School.

The Charity of the Month for November is

Project 9 Line www.project9line.org

Project 9 Line is a non-proﬁt organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue Their focus is to bridge the communication gap between veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

Patrick Donohue is a veteran himself and has an inspiring story of his own. He served in the Army on active duty from 2008 to 2012. He was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan from May of 2010 to April of 2011. Later, he reenlisted into the Army reserves, which he served in from 2014 to 2016. After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life. Anxiety and depression filled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.” Slowly but surely, things started to turn around for him. While he was in the VA hospital, he was exposed to some art and wellness programs that completely transformed the way he viewed himself. “I started writing poetry, meditating, and doing yoga and these activities had a profound impact on me.” He was looking to see if any veteran organization offered those programs and services outside of the VA and he didn’t find any, so at that time he decided that he would build it himself. Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life. In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

“Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney. I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I ﬂoat in a ﬂoat tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible. In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.” Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them. Students from the Helping Hands club at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus recently got an inside look at an organization that provides a critical service on Long Island. A group of 10 ninth graders visited the Island Harvest distribution center in Melville on Nov. 1, the club’s first field trip since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Helping Hands members spent three hours at the facility, learning about Island Harvest’s hunger relief efforts and volunteering their time to put together food packages for needy families. Students created an assembly line to

put together boxes and fill them with specific food items. “It was a good opportunity to help people that need food,” student Brielle Dargenio said. “I felt grateful to be able to help.” The group was able to interact with several of Island Harvest’s regular volunteers and learned that the charitable organization puts together thousands of those food kits each month, which are distributed to community centers around Long Island. Ames students contributed a few hundred in their short time at the distribution center.

“It’s important to give back to the community and help in any way that you can,” added Bridget Parkes. Faridah Benhammou said that the trip gave her greater appreciation for all that she has, and noted the importance of supporting people who don’t have as much. sold shirts to the students and staff. The National Junior Honor Society, led by Susan Beitzinger and Juliette Happe, raised money by selling ghost lollipops. Chiefs Challenge, advised by Ms. Happe and Caroline Glynn, educated Berner students about breast cancer with posters and facts during morning announcements. They also sold pink masks, buttons and bracelets to the faculty and staff. Donations to the Babylon

Breast Cancer Coalition were made in memory of Suzanne Scanio, a former Unqua Elementary School teacher. Additionally, fall sports teams raised money for breast cancer research, with proceeds going to the Side-Out Foundation. “Even though we are just students,” eight grader Alyssa Payero said, “it is important to show people who have this disease that they are not alone and that they are supported.”

Caroline Glynn and Juliette Happe said that they are thrilled to be back in person because Chiefs Challenge meetings involve hands-on activities. At the most recent meeting, students made pink and white banners and assembled ribbon pins for Berner’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month initiative. The Mural Club also is constantly engaged in hands-on projects. To begin the year, artists worked on a mural for this year’s One School, One Book initiative. All Berner students are reading and discussing “Slacker” by Gordon Korman. Each student in the Mural Club painted a colorcoded square using window paint, which will then be transferred to the glass block windows. Adviser Alison Clemente said this allowed dozens of studentartists to contribute a piece of mural. Later in the

year, they plan to create a painting for the renovated music suite. Teamwork is an essential element for the Robotics Club, and in-person meetings foster that collaboration as students build, program and test their robots. Adviser Mike Spiritus enjoys seeing students come together to solve problems to get their robots to perform the desired tasks. Ninth period ends just before 3 p.m. on weekdays at Berner Middle School but that final bell does not signal the end of the day for many students. Extracurricular activities are back in person this year, after meeting virtually last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Afterschool clubs are an important part of student life at any middle school, and Massapequa’s sixth, seventh and eighth graders have more than two dozen options. They can explore art, technology and world languages, get involved in student government and community service, and focus on their mental and physical health. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invites families to watch the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Deck Hockey League Fall Jamboree and register for the Spring Season on Saturday, November 13th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale. Dek hockey is a variation of traditional ice hockey, where the games are played sans skates on the ‘dek’ of an ice rink after the ice has melted away.
