The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

MTA Coalition Announces New Ad Campaign Educates Prevention of Marijuana Misuse & Vaping Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) announces its Toolkit for the Massapequas Prevention Campaign to address the dangers of marijuana misuse and vaping. The eight week campaign highlights key facts parents (and residents) should know regarding the dangers of marijuana misuse and vaping. In the coming weeks, the campaign will expand its outreach and include social marketing media messages and public service
announcements to further the prevention initiative. MTAC will also award one $50 Visa Gift Card for parents and residents who share the campaign messages on Facebook using #MTACToolkit. Boarding The Energy Bus Third graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District have recently been reading “The Energy Bus for Kids” to spark a growth mindset for the year. Teacher Danielle McCaffery said that the goal is to create classroom environment filled with
positive energy. The book by Jon Gordon has four messages — create a positive vision, fuel your ride with energy, no bullies allowed and love your passengers. It shows children how to overcome negativity and everyday challenges to be their best and share their positive
energy with others. Students completed a writing assignment for each message, such as setting personal goals for themselves, identifying the traits of a buddy and a bully, and describing ways they could show kindness to others.

National Merit Semifinalist Massapequa High School senior Jack Chillemi has been named a 2020 National Merit Semifinalist in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Jack was one of approximately 16,000 students from across the nation to receive the designation, based on his performance on the PSAT. “I am really excited and this recognition means a lot,” Jack said. “It will give me a lot of opportunities for college and for scholarships.” Jack, who attended East Lake Elementary School as a child, is a member of the Crooners vocal group at Massapequa High School, is an officer in the National Honor Society and a member of the Spanish National Honor
Society. He has enrolled in 10 Advanced Placement courses. “I continually look to challenge myself,” he said, “and if I can take the hardest classes and succeed in them, then I should.” Currently exploring his college options, Jack said he plans to major in engineering and pursue a career in mechatronics, a combination of robotics, electronics, computer, telecommunications, systems, control and product engineering. Outside of school, he plays basketball for travel and intramural teams, and writes music. He is also an academic role model for his sister, Rachel, a 10th grader at the high school, and Alex, a seventh grader at Berner Middle School.
Jack will continue in the competition hosted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and vie for one of 7,600 scholarships, worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. “I don’t think it was a surprise to any of us that Jack was named a National Merit semifinalist,” Principal Brian Conboy said. “He’s an outstanding student and a great representative of the Massapequa community and Massapequa High School.”

Teamwork Is The Recipe For Success There were no ovens in sight, but there was still plenty of cooking going on in the library at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District as eighth graders refreshed their culinary knowledge. In early October, students in Family and Consumer Science classes participated in a hands-on Breakout EDU activity to review material from sixth grade. Students worked in teams and had to solve recipe-themed clues to open up a series of three-
digit, four-digit, letter, color and key locks. For one clue, students had to look at a list of ingredients printed in different color text. By putting the list in order from the smallest to the greatest amount, they were able to crack the code for the color lock. In another challenge, they had to convert large numbers of teaspoons and tablespoons to simpler forms to get the code. Each time a group solved a clue they shouted out a common baking ingredient.
Family and consumer science teachers Kristen Kenny-Didamo and Dani Shehada partnered with library media specialists Laurie Martucci-Walsh and Julie Rogers in coordinating the activity. Ms. Kenny-Didamo discovered the “Lost Recipe” activity on the Breakout EDU website as a fun way for students to work cooperatively using their prior knowledge of kitchen tools and measurements while getting them ready for the upcoming cooking unit.
