Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness. Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to find clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult.

The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

Garden Club. Their Garden Club holds meetings, where members decide what to plant and grow, while learning about various aspects of organic gardening. Anyone who is interested in gardening is welcomed by this Garden Club to volunteer with them. Volunteers can attend to the basic gardening by helping to weed, till, harvest and more, build vertical and raised beds and more. The Community Garden program also incorporates the preparation of healthy meals made from organic ingredients. Members also learn to cook and enjoy various new dishes. The garden planning and planting happens from JanuaryNovember, so now is a great time to learn and get involved before you can get busy planning and planting! I hope for all a cool, rain-free season and hopefully an easy winter as the months move on. Speaking of the months moving on, we are gearing up for the October Luncheon at Mercato Kitchen and Cocktails in Massapequa Park on October 28th. We will be treated to a visit from Kristine O’Brien - the Massapequa Olympian who placed fourth in her contest. Ms. O’Brien will be on hand to tell our members about what she experienced during her time at the competition. We look forward to seeing her at the luncheon.

Our Third Vice President Robin Hepworth is planning our Holiday Craft Fair on November 13th at the American Legion in Massapequa. More details will be sent out as we get closer to the event. Sponsors and raffle baskets will be needed, so please step up if you can. Please mark your calendars for November 18th for our monthly luncheon at Smokin Al’s. The December Christmas / Chanukah Party will be at Zona on Merrick Road on the 9th of December. Please try to attend both functions. I have formed a sub-committee for the purpose of recommending a way to honor our past Town Supervisor - the late John Venditto. Supervisor Venditto was very supportive of the Chamber for many years, and we are trying to show our appreciation by memorializing him in some way. Stay tuned for the committee’s recommendation and enactment of their decision.

Past President Patty Orzano will be starting the Food Drive and Toy Drive for Toys for Tots, along with assistance from Past President Phyllis Doria and our Board. We appreciate your support of these programs. I have also appointed Second Vice President Karen Gawrych as our new Scholarship Committee Chairperson for the springtime awards that we give to local senior students. The awards will be $250 each as last year, and our local high schools and members are the benefactors of this fine program. Lastly, a reminder that Chamber dues renewal notices will go out in November. The dues will be $130 annually and $200 if you want to add the website advertisement that we offer for the additional $70. Please remit as soon as possible when you receive the invoice in the mail. I look forward to seeing all at the next meeting.
