Far from the average breast cancer foundation, Pink Aid’s mission is to help local underserved women survive treatment on both a ﬁnancial and emotional level. Its goals are made possible through fundraisers such as its forthcoming Second Annual Pink Chair Luncheon and Fashion Show, which pays special attention to “local breast cancer warriors.” This unique event, which last year raised more than $225,000 from its 300 attendees in support of several local community grants, is being held at Mitchells|Marshs in Huntington on Thursday, October 15th at 11:30 a.m. The heart and soul of the Pink Chair fundraiser is the “Celebration of Life/ Warrior Fashion Show” featuring 17 brave Long Island women who have battled through treatment of the disease. Blank Page By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The bane of every writer’s existence. That inﬁnite white space stretching before you, silently mocking its would-be-author’s lack of inspiration. And yet, there is always that potential that the following few keystrokes just might be the beginning of the next great American novel. Or not. Perhaps another day, on another page… I have always been one of those writers who wakes up with a thought, the makings of an entire essay, in fact, and then helplessly allows it to fade into the

oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these ﬂeeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? Too easy. And yet, clearly not

simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has announced an application deadline extension to October 16th, 2015 for tuition reimbursement through their historic educational initiative, the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York State. “The FASNY HELP program has benefitted hundreds of dedicated firefighters serving communities across the State. In addition to helping meet the staffing needs of local departments, a better educated firefighter is simply a better firefighter. For the student volunteers and the fire departments, this is the very definition of

a ‘win-win’ situation,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. Under FASNY HELP, any active volunteer firefighter, in good standing, and who hasn’t already achieved a college degree is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement. The reimbursement is in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic courses that the HELP student-volunteer can pursue, either on a full-time or part-time basis. FASNY HELP also covers online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must

maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulﬁll a service requirement after they complete their course of study. They must attend a chartered NYS community college; Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ location options. Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer ﬁre departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in their local community. As a high school senior, there is no issue more relevant to me than picking a college. Over the past few years, I’ve wrestled with the idea of choosing the right school for me. After watching my brother make his decision, and then regret it during his freshman year, I’ve realized that this is a very important choice. My brother eventually transferred to the University of Miami, and hasn’t stopped talking about it since. He loves it, and after visiting, I fell in love too. The campus is beautiful, the academic reputation is unmatched and the Toppel Career Center is an invaluable resource which I hope to take advantage of.

I can see myself at The U. This is why I tried really hard to make myself stand out as an applicant. Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions, was happy to answer my questions about applying, and calm my anxiety. He informed us that, even though my grades and standardized test scores are pretty competitive, the holistic admissions process puts an emphasis on the applicant as a whole. With any luck, I’ll be able to put this advice to good use. After touring many competitive schools and narrowing my options, the University of Miami kept floating to the top of the

pile. I plan on touring the University of Miami again this weekend, just to further my desired transition into a Miami Hurricane. I’ve picked my institution of higher education, and now I can only hope that they pick me. I’m excited about the possibility of spending the next two years alongside my brother at one of the best colleges in the country, and I’m really looking forward to spending the next four years at my dream school. My past has shaped me in to the person I am today, but the University of Miami will make me the man I hope to become in the future.

This grant-based organization is the brainchild of Amy Katz, Amy Gross, Renee Mandis and Andrew Mitchell, whose family owns Mitchells of Westport in Connecticut and Mitchells|Marshs in Huntington, New York. Pink Aid Long Island was launched last year in recognition of the same need for free mammograms and

compassionate care services for women battling breast cancer in our own local communities. “Andrew started this foundation with a group of women after hearing stories of women struggling to cover basic needs while trying to battle the disease,” explains Allison Mitchell, President of Pink Aid, Long Island. “My husband, Chris, who owns Mitchells|Marshs, has a special place in his heart for this particular cause as his mother and grandmother have both been affected by the disease. Having always paid special attention to philanthropic opportunities, particularly at the community level, the entire Mitchell family supports Pink Aid and the Pink Chair Fundraiser.”

CANCER WALK SUPPORT - The Long Island League to Abolish Cancer (L.I.L.A.C.) is a volunteer organization that originated in 1967 by ten women who were committed to devoting themselves to funding cancer research projects in the New York metropolitan area. Over the years it has grown to over 150 dedicated members. More than 95% of the money that is raised is donated directly in the form of research grants to purchase speciﬁc pieces of lab equipment. The League held their Cancer Walk this year on September 27th at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa.

The Over 50 Fair once again had a successful run on September 27th at the Melville Marriott. The Fair had 90 exhibitors and 30 classes, some taught by local and national celebrities, covering a variety of disciplines, all designed to help those over age 50 live their lives to the fullest. The annual event is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island, and it once again had new features for its attendees. “Every year, our single guests request a way to meet other singles. This year, 7 in Heaven Singles Events facilitated this interaction in our new Singles Lounge, which had a seating area and opportunities to meet other singles,” explained East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, the Over 50 Fair director. Chef Jonathan of Fox TV’s hit show MasterChef Season 6 and Chef AJ of Fox TV’s MasterChef Junior Season 3 did cooking demonstrations as well as “meet and greets.” Several beauty queens were in attendance, including the newly crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2015, CJ Marie. Edith Jason, age 80, one of the oldest yoga teachers on Long Island, taught a yoga class. Comedians Mark Brier and Howard Newman entertained at separate performances. In addition, there were a group psychic reading, reiki class, iPad tips, saving for retirement, travel, and health topics such as sleep apnea, cardiology, and podiatry. This event has been building a loyal following among the Boomer Generation during the six years of its existence due to its consistent

Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this winter by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Michele M. Johnson. “Anyone interested in learning to skate or in sharpening their abilities will be happy to learn that the ice skating center offers skating classes for residents all throughout the year,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Registration for Series 2 (November 1st through December 19th) will begin on October 18th. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone at 516.797.4126.” The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels.

For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that applications for the lottery to distribute tickets to the Town’s annual free Holiday Concerts are now available. “Now in its thirty-second year, the Town’s annual Holiday Concerts have been one of the most beloved and well-attended musical events the Town sponsors,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “By popular demand, the Holiday Concerts include three evening performances, and a Wednesday afternoon matinee. The high rate of demand has led to the creation of a Holiday Concert ticket lottery, a fair and impartial system that has been very successful in the past. Residents need only pick up an application, or print out a copy from the Town’s Web site, www. oysterbaytown.com, fill it out and return it to the

address on the application. All postcards must be received by October 30th, at 4:45 p.m. Once received, the applicant’s name will be placed into the lottery, from which winners will be selected at random.” Applications for the Holiday Concerts Ticket Lottery can be placed in the drop off at the following locations: • Oyster Bay Town Hall North, Town Clerk’s Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay. • Oyster Bay Town Hall South, Parks Department (1st Floor), Department of Community & Youth Services (2nd Floor), 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa. Supervisor Venditto indicated that those on the Town concert mailing list have already received an application in the

mail. Simply fill out the detachable postcard at the bottom, affix a stamp on the reverse side and drop it in the mail. If selected, there is a limit of 2 tickets per household. Supervisor Venditto added that each lottery winner will receive two tickets in the mail by November 20th, 2015. Supervisor Venditto went on to say that the Holiday Concerts, which will be held on the evenings of Monday, December 7th, Tuesday, December 8th, and Wednesday, December 9th at 7:30 p.m. and the afternoon of Wednesday, December 9th, at 2:00 p.m., at the Tilles Center on the Long Island University – C.W. Post Campus will, once again, feature the incomparable Concert Pops of Long Island under the direction of Dean Karahalis and other talented musical performers.

The Nassau BOCES Adult Education Program has partnered with Hofstra University to offer the perfect launch pad for aspiring chefs through the newly opened Culinary Institute. Courses take place at the Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center in a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen that has been praised by industry experts as one of the most sophisticated facilities in the country. At the Culinary Institute, students learn from seasoned culinary arts professionals about nutrition, the art and science of quality food preparation, and how to land a job in the food industry. The Institute’s Baking course, running now and in the spring, prepares students for entrylevel positions in the food service industry through

Discovering the Fun educational opportunity. The youngsters engage in physical activity where they have to step out of their comfort zone while having fun and learning at the same time. “With adventure education teambuilding activities, to ecology based programs, students get a hands-on positive learning experience” said Carolann James, Program Coordinator for Nassau BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education. The field trip successfully provided students with a chance

to become naturalists for the day and think outside the box. The objective of the low challenge course is to help students learn communication skills, responsibility, being a good listener and how to respect others. The program opens up all sorts of educational opportunities that many of these students may not have learned in a classroom environment. Brookville Outdoor Education offered an adventurous, active and healthy day of personal growth for Birch students.

DISCOVERING THE FUN - Merrick UFSD fifth-grader Angela Villaloma swings from one platform to another to help improve her focus and strength at the Nassau BOCES Brookville Outdoor and Environmental Education Center. Groups develop teamwork while relying on communication skills with this activity.

Nassau BOCES employees were awarded grants totaling more than $40,000 through the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation. The grants will be used to purchase an on-line reading program, iPads for instructional use, a mobile library and supplies to plant a community garden, along with other projects. “Over the years we have supported a lot of wonderful projects that truly help the students,” said Catherine Pucciarelli, Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation Chairperson. “We’ve awarded 200 grants totaling over $287,362, since the inception of this program in 2007.” Students at the Children’s Readiness

Center (CRC) will benefit from a grant to buy iPads to help with their expressive and receptive language skills. “The iPad is a very motivating and reinforcing tool to use to help our developmentally delayed children develop their expressive language skills and it helps me assist them work on their goals to learn,” said Debra Cherry, teacher at CRC and grant recipient. Following the success of its three previous events, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is holding its 2015 East End Walk for Alzheimer’s and Fall Festival on Saturday, October 17th at the Village Green (intersection of Main Street and Mill Road) in Westhampton Beach. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony at 9 a.m. The 5K walk kicks off with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. After the Walk, participants are invited to return to the Village Green for a fall-themed lunch buffet, entertainment and raffles at 11:45 a.m. Participants who raise $100 or more will receive a 2015 Walk lunch tote and a 2015 Walk T-shirt. There is no registration fee for teams or walkers who raise donations for the East End Walk, but a minimum donation of $25 is required.
