Massapequa’s High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department, in conjunction with its Child Study course and Children in Families college course, will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents. TOWN BOARD HONORS MASSAPEQUA PARK COUPLE - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board honored Massapequa Park resident Antonina Barry and her boyfriend Daniel Shea for their lifesaving actions to prevent a deadly house fire. While setting up for a backyard graduation party, they noticed their neighbors’ house was on fire and raced next door to alert them. Thanks to the couple’s quick response, their neighbors were able to safely evacuate before a backyard propane tank exploded and sent a fireball into the home. The blaze it caused was so enormous that it required firefighters from more than ten departments across Long Island. Presenting them with official Town citations, Supervisor Saladino publicly commended and thanked Antonina and Daniel for demonstrating an ability to act courageously when fellow citizens are in need.

Lively Homecoming Crowd Fuels Chiefs Win

An enthusiastic and spirited crowd, highly energized for Massapequa High School’s first homecoming celebration in two years, cheered the Chiefs on to a shutout victory on Sept. 25. The 28-0 win for the football team capped a day of Massapequa pride, beginning with the homecoming parade along Park Boulevard and Merrick Road. The parade kicked off from Massapequa Park Village Hall, with retiring Superintendent Lucille Iconis and recently retired Deputy Superintendent Alan Adcock serving as grand marshals. They rode through town in a red convertible and
were applauded for their combined 44 years of service to the district. At the front of the parade, a contingent of administrators and Board of Education trustees proudly walked behind the blue and gold Massapequa Public Schools “Excellence in Education” banner. They were followed by the marching band, cheerleaders, kickline team, the homecoming court and representatives of the classes of 2022, 2023 and 2024. Nicole Ferretti sang the National Anthem and students from ASL classes signed along before the start of the homecoming game against the Port Washington Vikings. The
Chief nation section at the south end of the bleachers made the most noise, regularly chanting “MassA-Pe-Qua” and cheering every run, pass, touchdown and tackle by the Chiefs, who improved their record to 3-0. At halftime, the five senior royalty students were announced. www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonprofits and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island. Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. This non-profit is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. The theme is a call to action and in their opinion, it’s long overdue.

With the new crisis counselor service, we will be able to provide the help our Vets need. County Executive Curran has once again fought to do the right thing for Nassau’s Vets and we thank her for her ongoing support,” said Ralph Esposito, Director of Nassau County Veterans Service Agency. The service will be free for all Veterans but will target Afghanistan and Iraq Veterans, who are 2.5x more likely to die by suicide. The crisis counselors will be licensed social workers specializing in veterans / military distress and will offer in person crisis intervention services, care coordination support and linkage to peer support services. These crisis counselors
will be trained to support veterans combatting mental illnesses, suicidal thoughts, substance use disorder and emotional distress. The program is being developed by the Mental Health Association of Nassau County and will be supported by American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding. Curran also announced a Veterans picnic, open to Veterans and their families, on October 23 from 11am to 2pm at Eisenhower Park. The event will have free food and entertainment as well as an array of support services available to Veterans in Nassau County. County Executive Curran also reminded the public of existing VSA programs, such as the Vet2Vet program. Vet2Vet is a nationally modeled program that aims to reduce Veteran Suicide and substance abuse through peer support. For information on any of the support services the VSA offers call: 516-5726565

Burns Town Park. This walk has helped increase awareness for autism and supports those on the spectrum, and this year, more than $4,300 was raised to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities, a dedicated facility that offers families comprehensive assessments, family support and updated information on autism research while also building awareness. In ongoing support of Suicide Prevention Month, and as military and Veterans suicides continue to rise at an alarming rate (25% in 2020), County Executive Curran was joined with local Veterans and the Veterans Services Agency (VSA) to announce a new support system for Nassau’s Veterans. Nassau’s VSA will soon be equipped with in-house social workers, specializing in assisting veterans with crisis counseling, substance abuse and other mental health related issues. The County aims to have the services available six days a week (Monday through Saturday) at no cost to local veterans. “Our Veterans Service Agency does a fantastic job supporting the brave men and women who have served our country and the acquisition of specialized crisis counselors will only expand on what they offer to our Veterans. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with local and police officials to encourage residents to support the ‘Back the Blue’ ribbon campaign in recognition of Police Appreciation Week, a national recognition celebration in honor of men and women in blue. Typically held in May but rescheduled due to pandemic restrictions, National Police Week honors law enforcement officers who service to protect the safety of our communities, as well as those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
