in a See-Think-Wonder exercise, using the iconic photo of firefighters raising the American flag amidst the pile of rubble from the World Trade Center. She asked students to note their observations and make inferences about the photo based on their existing knowledge of that day’s tragic events. She followed by showing a short video, “Hope Was Born on 9/11.” Seventh grade teacher Kimberly Simpson shared online resources through the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, including audio recordings of people recounting their stories from the day. As they were listening, students wrote their feelings on paper footprints to “put themselves in the shoes” of those who witnessed the attacks. In Josie Charvet’s eighth grade classroom, students looked at photos of the Ground Zero site in the aftermath of the
attacks and today. Several students who have visited the memorial and museum shared their impressions. Sixth grade teacher Robert Kane told his story in finding out about the attacks, explaining how most people remember exactly where they were and what they were doing at the time. He also discussed how people are still affected by the tragedy, and talked about the FealGood Foundation and its support for Sept. 11’s first responders. Massapequa High School social studies teacher Daniel Bachman, in his Advanced Placement government class, also related the attacks to present day. He showed students Jon Stewart’s recent testimony before Congress to extend the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act for those who became sick in the aftermath because of the toxic air, which

sparked discussion on the role that lobbying plays in American government. College government students in James Koester’s class, and ninth graders in Edward Boyle’s social studies classes at the Ames Campus, watched “The Man in the Red Bandana” about Welles Crowther, an equity trader at the World Trade Center and volunteer firefighter
in his New York suburb. With a red handkerchief covering his nose and face because of the smoke, he helped lead several people to safety from one of the towers. Mr. Koester said that this was “one story of so many” heroes who emerged in the moments after the attacks to help complete strangers. Ninth grade social
studies teachers Nicole Reiss displayed covers of New Yorker magazine from before the attacks, in the months after, and from two years later. Students went around the room and analyzed the images to determine what mood the artist was trying to capture and how those covers reflected the national mentality of the time.

An event that is history for students, but is still a strong memory for many of their teachers, was the focal point of discussion in social studies classes throughout the Massapequa School District on Sept. 11. To commemorate the 18th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, students and teachers engaged in meaningful dialogue about Sept. 11, 2001, and its lasting impacts. Curriculum Associate for Social Studies Dr. Brian Trapani said that teachers found many different ways to discuss the events of Sept. 11 with their students and relate it to the present day. Noting that this year’s seniors are 16 and 17 years old, no longer are there students in the district who were alive when the attacks occurred. Free Boating Safety Seminar Unit, and will include topics related to safe operation, regulations, responsibilities of boat ownership and operation. The seminar is free for Town residents. Supervisor Saladino stated, “This Boating Safety Seminar offers participants the fundamentals of safe boating operations. The course is currently recommended for all boaters and required by New York State for
all personal watercraft operators. Beginning in 2020, it will be begin to be required for all boaters and personal watercraft operators.” Participants must be a minimum of 10 years old to participate in the seminar. Classes are free, but advanced registration is required. Currently, Safe Boating Courses are required for motor boat operators born on or before May 1, 1996. The
course is also required for personal watercraft (Jet Ski) operators, who must be a minimum of 14 years of age. Beginning in 2020, and continuing through a phase-in process through 2024, all boaters must take a Safe Boating Course under the recently enacted Brianna’s Law in New York State. Ready For An Awesome Year They may only be there for one year, but students entering Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus are looking to make it a memorable one. The incoming ninth graders learned about the many opportunities they will have as they begin their high school careers during orientation. Danielle Kennedy, the executive assistant to the principal, said ninth
grade is an important year because all courses help them fulfill graduation requirements and prepare them for the future. She encouraged students to get involved beyond the school day by taking part in extracurricular activities, which are available at both Ames and the high school’s main campus. “We hope that you will take advantage of all of the opportunities we have
in order to make this an exceptional year,” she said. After a short presentation, students were then allowed to explore the building. With the schedules and maps in hand, they traversed the school to find their classes for the upcoming year. Several teachers were available to greet their future students and help them navigate the halls.
WHERE IN THE WORLD? - From their street to their planet, third graders in Richard Hludzinski’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District made flipbooks identifying the places they live for a geography project. Mr. Hludzinski explained that the ability to cite communities to which they belong, such as town, county, state, nation and continent, is part of the third grade Marie Laura social studies curriculum. The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetry of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish the actors are local students. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Long Island Cares. In 2017, Massapequa Park Mayor, Jeff Provato, even showed up to give support and was given the “Key To The Haunt”! This year they are donating to Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicated with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Stop by on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM to see what it is all about! Additionally, they are still actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing, Scare Team Members, Security and on their Bake Team. Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Sponsorship opportunities are also available. It’s hard to believe that October is already here and Halloween is quickly approaching! After The Cemetery of Lost Souls, a grassroots organization ran by a family in Massapequa Park, reached out to me and told me their story, I decided to choose them for the Charity of the Month. Sometimes it’s easy to judge a book by it’s cover. For example, when you see the frightening Haunted House that they create each year, you may not be thinking that there is a deep meaning behind why they do it. Once I discovered this, along with the driving force which pushes them to bring this event back year after year, I knew I had to feature them! In 2008 Christopher and Joann (husband and wife) of Massapequa Park started decorating their yard for Halloween with their children. In 2009 they built their first prop, added some smoke, lights and store bought decorations. That same year they became aware of H.O.L.I., an organization on Long Island that compiles a list of the best decorated home “Haunts”. It became their family’s goal to make it onto that list and in 2011 they achieved that goal. In 2012, their children had the idea of using their “special talents” to help others. Their oldest son thought of making their displays more interactive by adding actors to haunt their elaborate sets and setting up a donation box that people could donate to different charities. Their charity event was officially born and every year since it has grown bigger. Each year this organization gears up to create an elaborate Haunted House on their property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Additionally and more importantly, each year they choose a charity to raise funds for. The best part is, they don’t keep a penny for themselves. Every bit of money raised through this event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put the haunt on are volunteers and most of
