Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Louis Imbroto announced today that the Town will continue its partnership with Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, Island Harvest Food Bank, to collect food and supplies to support the urgent relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Irma, the second consecutive catastrophic storm to hit our nation in recent weeks. “Hurricane Irma made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 hurricane, forcing thousands of people to seek food and temporary shelter, as the storm, which grew to be the strongest ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean, continued to deliver unprecedented amounts of rain and high winds in the impacted area,” said Supervisor Saladino. “I’m amazed and awed by the response of our Town residents over the past few weeks as we’ve worked to support the recent victims of Hurricane Harvey. with Jamie Lynn Ryan Autumn’s Eve And with that, summer’s final swan song is upon us, as the autumnal air seems to have taken up residence across this long island that we call home. Some will say the summer months flew by in the blink of an eye; others will say they dragged on unbearably. How drastic are the differences in perception from one person to another. It’s funny how things seem to move in fast forward once the school year gets underway. Halloween decorations have been out in full force for weeks, with Christmas not far behind. That spring cleaning that we’ve been putting off until fall is now begging for our attention. As the leaves begin to turn, can outdoor cleanups be far behind as well? In the entertainment world, gone are the evenings of summer concerts under the stars, replaced instead by nights spent in front of
the television as many of our favorite shows return from hiatus. That baseball season which once seemed endless on opening day in April is now nearing its final stretch, as playoff pictures begin to take shape. All this, while football season takes over, and each Sunday’s activities become dictated by the game schedule of your favorite team. Soon enough, all roads heading eastward will be jammed with traffic as the masses scramble to take advantage of each beautiful autumn weekend. Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes… so much to accomplish in so little time. And yet, there is always precisely the same amount of time. It’s all in how we choose to use it. A good family friend of mine recently commented that we all tend to live as though we have this list of obligations

to complete, rather than taking a step back and simply experiencing each moment as it happens. There is very little we actually have to do; in fact, almost nothing is required within a particular time frame. And so, we can afford to relax a bit, to take our time transitioning, whether it is from one season to the next or something larger and more significant to our personal lives. So, while the calendar may indicate autumn just a few days from now, that doesn’t mean we need to give up enjoying the warmth of the sun, or throw away our remaining summer plants in favor of mums and pumpkins. All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion. A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace. Plenty to enjoy.

The third class of inductees to the Nassau County High School Athletic Hall of Fame will feature a longtime coach in the Massapequa School District. CarolAnn HabeebKiel, who coached the girls varsity volleyball team for 29 years, will be inducted on September 27th. Ms. Habeeb-Kiel was a member of the Massapequa High School volleyball team, including three years as a starter, before playing a year for SUNY Cortland and three years for St. John’s University. As a 20-year-old in 1988, she became Massapequa’s varsity coach and led the team through the fall 2016 season. Now, she turns leadership of the team over to her former players, but will remain coach of the eighth-grade team. During her tenure, her teams finished with an overall league record of 367-88, and were undefeated in the last 218 league games since 2004. Overall, the Lady Chiefs amassed more than 500 victories under her leadership, including tournament play.
Massapequa captured 17 consecutive county titles from 2000 to 2016 with Long Island championships in 2007, 2013 and 2014 and a state title in 2007. Ms. Habeeb-Kiel credited the success of the teams to a strong feeder program. In addition to successful junior high school and junior varsity teams, she and her varsity players have hosted a weeklong summer volleyball camp for the past 20 years. It is open to girls entering fifth through seventh grades to give them a feel for the sport before junior high tryouts. “We’re not just a team, we’re a program,” she said. “It starts from the junior high and it starts from the camp.” As a coach, Ms. HabeebKiel has always emphasized the importance of good character, evidenced by her teams earning the New York State Sportsmanship Award three times. She implemented a mentoring program in which senior varsity players guide newcomers to the team, and high school players help out the junior high
More than 500 ninthgraders are attending Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus this year and while most came over together from Berner Middle School, some are brand new to the district. The Ames Campus
hosted a welcome breakfast for 14 new students on September 13th in the library, and they were treated to bagels, donut holes and orange juice. Some students live in Massapequa and are new to the district after attending
students. The varsity team also started the Dig Pink tradition each October, in which one game is designated to raise money for breast cancer awareness. Multiple fall sports teams in the district followed suit and in the last 10 years, Massapequa has collected more than $85,000 for the Side-Out Foundation. She has been an elementary school teacher in the district since 1991 and enters her ninth year teaching fifth grade at McKenna Elementary School. She said coaching the varsity team in the late 1980s is what inspired her to pursue a career in education. Ms. Habeeb-Kiel was nominated for induction into the Hall of Fame by John Piropato, district director of health, physical education, athletics and recreation. The ceremony for the 31 inductees will be held on Sept. 27 at the Crest Hollow Country Club. She said she shares the award with all those who have supported her including her former players, assistant coaches, members of the Booster Club and her parents, who were always in the stands for her games. “The people that I am in this class with are outstanding athletes and coaches that have these huge accomplishments,” she said. “For me to be included with them is a great honor. FAMILY PICNIC - Commitment to family life is at the core of the Knights of Columbus’ beliefs and ideals. The Our Lady of the Island Knights of Columbus Council 6911 of Massapequa Park recently hosted a family picnic at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa.
Focus on Service “We’re going to talk about doing good deeds,” said Vanessa Canning, a sixth-grade social studies teacher at Berner Middle School, as she addressed her students on the 16th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. In social studies classes throughout the Massapequa School District, teachers led discussions about the events from that day and also focused on the positive moments that occurred after, when people came together to help each other. September 11th has since become known as the National Day of Service and Remembrance. In that spirit, sixth-graders were asked to fill out “I Will” statements, listing six good deeds they could do in school, at home and in their community. Teachers shared the book, “September 12th: We Knew Everything Would be All Right,” written by a first-grade class, and
showed the video “Hope Was Born on 9/11” about children who were born the day of the attacks. Students were given “Never Forget 9-11-01” sheets to color in patriotic fashion and become part of a paper quilt. Sixth-grade teacher Kira Martelli said the purpose of the day’s lesson was to show students the many heroic actions that took place immediately after the attacks and encourage them to perform their own acts of kindness, whether on a local or on a global scale. Karen Lazar, a docent from the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City, spoke to about 100 eighth-graders. She was one of 25 representatives from the museum who were visiting schools throughout the metropolitan area that day. Ms. Lazar’s presentation included a timeline of the events on September 11th, 2001, accompanied
by photos and audio recordings. She shared stories about the heroes of the day, including the “man in the red bandana” who helped direct people to a staircase so they could flee one of the Twin Towers, and the “extraordinarily brave” passengers on Flight 93. The eighth-graders, who will visit the 9/11 memorial in May, learned about how the monument was designed at the former World Trade Center site. Ms. Lazar shared some of its nuances, such as how the names of the victims were not arranged alphabetically but by how the people were connected to each other. Students and staff were encouraged to wear red, white and blue to school. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Berner held a schoolwide moment of silence in honor of the September 11th victims and heroes.

The Long Island Chapter of Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, will hold its 2017 Long Island Autism Speaks Walk event on Sunday, October 1st, at Jones Beach - Field 5. Proceeds from Long Island 18th annual walk will support Autism Speaks’ mission to promote solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. Autism Speaks Walk is the world’s largest fundraising event to enhance the lives of people with autism today and accelerate a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow. The events are powered by the love of parents, grandparents, children, siblings, friends, relatives, and support providers for the special people in their lives living with autism. Funds raised help fuel innovative research and make connections to critical lifelong supports and services. In recent years, Autism Speaks has made a significant impact in the Long Island area. Through its Local Grants Program, Autism Speaks has provided funding to innovative local service providers. They include: Long Island Advocacy Center, Inc., Long Island Children’s Museum, Adelphi University-Bridges to Adelphi Program and The Family Center for Autism – to name few for a total grant investment of $60,000 in 2016. “Long Island Autism Speaks Walk is helping fund vital services and innovative solutions that improve quality of life for people with autism in our community,” said Eddie Russo, Autism
Speaks Long Island Senior Coordinator. “We are eager to support crucial work by researchers, service providers, and medical experts, both close to home and all across the country.” Alpha Xi Delta proudly serves as the North American sponsor of Autism Speaks Walk. Since 2009, Alpha Xi Delta has raised more than $5 million dollars for Autism Speaks, and they currently participate at Autism Speaks Walk events nationwide. Alpha Xi Delta’s work not only generates vital funds for autism research, but also raises awareness for autism. On World Autism Awareness Day in 2015, they lit more than a thousand buildings blue as part of Autism Speaks’ Light It Up Blue campaign in honor of the millions people affected by autism worldwide. “We’re very proud of the work our members have helped Autism Speaks accomplish,” said Elysia Gallivan, Executive Director of Alpha Xi Delta. “This partnership is especially meaningful for our Sisters, families and friends as the number of people affected by autism continues to increase. Adoption Fees Waived During the month of September, the shelter will waive the general adoption fees of $80 per dog and $84 per cat. All usual adoption services will be provided, including the spaying or neutering of the animal, vaccination and microchipping. “In addition to free adoption month, the Town will be hosting a Rabies Vaccination Clinic at the Animal Shelter on September 16th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” added Councilman Hand. “No reservations are necessary for the clinic, and the clinic will also be offering to microchip pets for $25,
so if they ever get lost, they can be taken to a vet clinic or animal shelter where they will be scanned for a microchip ID and returned to their rightful owner.” The Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter is located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) boasts some of the most talented and experienced arts
educators in the region. In addition to its core faculty of industry experts, LIHSA has a team of 20 Visiting Lecturers, consisting of working professionals in the school’s four basic disciplines - dance, music, theater and film. Among them is Elliot Weiss cticut, who teaches music. Elliot Weiss is a musical celebrity in his own right, having served as musical director for such legends of stage and screen as Ray Bolger and Leslie Uggams, among others. As a composer, he contributed to the Eugene O’Neill Award-winning The Witch of Wall Street. He was
producer of the musical revue Bittersuite: Songs of More Experience and worked with renowned writer Eric Blau on Dori: The Life and Times of Theodore Herzl. Mr. Weiss’s television credits include Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Gossip Girls, and his album credits include Fantasy with the internationally renowned Audubon String Quartet and Giving Voice with famous Broadway baritone David Edwards. Mr. Weiss is an esteemed graduate of The Juilliard School.

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with his Colleagues on the Town Board in recognizing Girl Scout Troop 104 of East Norwich/Oyster Bay for their leadership and dedication to the community. As part of the cadet troop’s Silver Award project, the troop built a “Little Free Library” and installed it at Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay.
