The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today. The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. The recipient of the wish must be 65 years of age or older (or a permanent resident of an eldercare facility), a legal US citizen, have an annual income of less than 200% of current federal government published poverty level income, or be unable to grant your own wish (not including financial reasons), have a history of giving back to others, be cognitively and physically capable of communicating and
experiencing the wish, and may be able to provide physician documentation when requested. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available). Jackie, a local Long Islander, was nominated to be a wish recipient by her friend at work. Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. They brought the bicycle to her workplace and the smile on her face was ear to ear! This foundation is presently looking for more wish applicants in the Long Island area. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Lords of 52nd Street will play ‘one last summer blast’ concert at Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale on Saturday, September 21st at 7:30 pm. This free concert will offer Town residents one last chance to soak up summertime fun before the fall season arrives. The Lords of 52nd Street features the legends of The Billy Joel Band, including Richie Cannata, Liberty DeVitto, and Russell Javors. “The Town’s Music Under
the Stars summertime concert series is far and away one of the most popular programs in our Town, and I am delighted that my administration can offer residents the chance to enjoy one additional date, and one last chance to enjoy the summer season before as we transition into fall,” Supervisor Saladino said. “The Lords of 52nd Street are legends of rock n’ roll and put on an amazing performance each time out, recreating all of Billy Joel’s indelible hits that they were originally a part of. Walk For Autism Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola invite residents to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Walk for Autism, held to benefit the Advantage Care Health Center’s Fay J. Linder Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The Walk, now in its 12th year, will take place on Saturday, September 21st, at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa. “Autism can present itself in a wide range of conditions characterized
by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “It is estimated that the condition effects 1 in every 68 people in the United States, and the earlier it is diagnosed the greater the ability to help with intervention services.” Registration for the event begins at 10 a.m., with the walk commencing at 11 a.m. A post-walk tailgate party is
