Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that historic Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay will continue to offer ‘virtual field trips’ for classes for many schools in the area to continue to highlight the stories of resiliency during the Revolutionary War from Robert Townsend and his compatriots as members of George Washington’s spy ring. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Raynham Hall Museum has presented more than 100 virtual programs, and reached over 3,000 students across Long Island. Get Ahead of Chimney Repair This Season Woodburning fireplaces or fuel stoves can add warmth and ambiance to a home. These appliances are particularly coveted in the cooler months when people spend more time indoors. Maintenance is necessary in order for fireplaces and stoves to function safely, and that upkeep must include paying close attention to the functionality of the chimney. Chimneys are designed to last for decades. Cracks and spalling in brick chimneys are common concerns that can cause significant damage if left unchecked. Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the ﬂue. Rather than running the risk of costly repairs, which can cost several thousand dollars, homeowners can take some simple steps to keep their chimneys in tip-top shape. Certain components of chimney maintenance are doit-yourself tasks, while others may be better left to the professionals. • Start from the inside and ensure that dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. Replacement fireplace dampers should be snug and not have any gaps, states Vertical Chimney Care. • Conduct a visual inspection of the chimney to check for any cracks or spalling. Spalling is the wearing

Jeremiah F. Anglim, longtime resident of Amityville, died September 2, 2020 at the home of his son in Massapequa. He was 88 years old. Jerry was born January 13, 1932 in Brooklyn to Francis Aloysius and Anne Elizabeth (Mehegan) Anglim. Mr. Anglim joined the United States Marine Corps in February 1952, later transferring to Reserves and subsequently retiring as a Captain. Jerry joined the ranks of the NY Police Department in 1956, served until 1977 when he retired. He was a 53 year member of the Massapequa Fire Department, an ex-captain of

Engine Co. #4. He was predeceased by his wife Ann in June 2017 and also his sons Frank and Paul. Survivors include his children Kristine Cantrell, Celeste Kusmierski (Walter), Nancy Burnham (Joel), Peter Anglim (Diane); seventeen (17) grandchildren, twentyone (21) great grandchildren and two (2) great great grandchildren, and a sister Francis Franzo. He was also predeceased by four (4) brothers and three (3) sisters. Deacon Rich Ferri conducted a prayer service on the evening of Tuesday, September 8th. Father Gerard Gordon, pastor

St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Martin’s assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family. Interment followed with military honors in St. Charles Cemetery. Fire Dept. conducted Last Alarm and members of both the Fired Dept. and NYPD acted as escorts and honor guard. Donations in memory of Jerry may be made to St. Martin of Tours Parish Outreach. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip.

As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

charity code FG-WIBCC20.

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. The Massapequa School District is welcoming 63 new teachers for the 202021 school year who enter with great enthusiasm. Each school has at least three new teachers, with as many as 12 at McKenna Elementary School. New faculty members run the gamut from elementary to middle school to high school teachers and span multiple subject areas. The group includes gifted and talented program teachers, librarians, psychologists, reading specialists, social workers, special education teachers and speech therapists. The large group of new teachers this year follows a higher than usual number of retirements in June. Some are leave replacements, and others have previously worked in the district and are moving into permanent roles. Dr. Thomas Fasano, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said that the new teachers represent “the very best” of candidates who went through a very thorough and rigorous hiring process. To help support their transition to Massapequa schools, the district held an extensive four-day new teacher orientation program at Massapequa High School from Aug. 18-21. The program included welcoming remarks from Superintendent Lucille Iconis and Board of

Education President Kerry Wachter, an introduction to technology tools and resources, overviews of curriculum, professional development and special education, breakout groups and meetings with department supervisors and building administrators. In a sign of the times, new teachers had to wear masks during orientation and complete a daily health questionnaire. Jaclyn Scorce, a new fifth grade teacher at McKenna Elementary School, said she particularly enjoyed the presentation on technology because she knows that it is one of the best ways to engage today’s students in learning. She wants to give her students access to

many different digital tools throughout the year to see what they are capable of creating. Erin Mosier, a Massapequa High School graduate, will return to her alma mater to teach history to 10th, 11th and 12th graders. After having worked as a substitute and leave replacement teacher, this is her first permanent position. Recognizing this will not be a typical school year, she brings an open mind and a readiness to adapt to changes. “It’s exciting and it’s a very interesting time to go into teaching. You have to be ﬂexible,” she said. “It’s really rewarding to give back to the students at the school that built me and helped me find my love for education.”
