9/11 REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY - On Thursday, September 9th, 2021, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran hosted Nassau County’s 20th Anniversary of 9/11 Remembrance and Recitation of Names Ceremony at Eisenhower Park. The ceremony included surviving family members reading the names of residents who lost their lives in the attacks, as well the unveiling of a new 9/11 Responders Monument. The 6,500-pound, red granite monument pays tribute to the first responders who lost their lives to illness years after joining the rescue and recovery operation at ground zero in the wake of the attack on September 11, 2001.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that veterans and active United States military personnel are invited to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration slated for Friday, September 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. This free event, open to all Town of Oyster Bay residents currently or formerly active, will include a BBQ and musical entertainment. “The Town of Oyster
Bay is committed to serving veterans and ensuring they have access to important benefits in which they are entitled to,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This is an important way of thanking our brave hometown heroes for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each and every day as Americans.” President Harry S. Truman established Armed Forces Appreciation Day in 1950 as a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. This single holiday provides an opportunity for citizens to come together and thank
our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. The Town’s celebration includes a patriotic musical salute to our hometown heroes, including a special performance by the “American Bombshells,” and a free barbeque. To accommodate as many hometown heroes as possible, veterans and active military personnel are invited to bring one guest. Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-profit organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give. They are so excited to be hosting their first Community Share Day on Saturday, September 18th with the Huntington Assembly of God! This will be a fun and engaging new way for their kindhearted, caring donors to connect with the families that they serve in their beautiful Huntington Station community. How does it work? You register online for a time slot. Then you neatly pack your car with the items you would like to share with the community, such as clothing, toys, household items, unexpired nonperishable food and any other items in good/new condition. Clothing must not be ripped, torn, or stained, missing buttons, or broken zippers. If you would like to give gift cards to families you may, but they ask that no cash is given. Also, no large electronics or furniture please. You can sign up for a two-hour time slot, where they will have the cars set up “trunk-or-treat” style in the parking lot. Community members will be able to walk around to the different cars and browse. You must stay by your
request.

There will be no charge for donating or receiving items at the event and HHRM reserves the right to review all items on the day of the event. Tax receipts will be provided for all donations upon

They will serve hot dogs, chips and soda to all who attend and they truly hope that it will be an enjoyable time for both our donors and community members! They are still in need of participants! Rain date is September 25th. If you are interested in volunteering with HHRM, there is a new opportunity available! The organization is looking for volunteers to help at the mission with their distributions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tasks include sorting, folding, hanging on racks, rolling racks in and out of the building, helping with pantry bags on occasion and being available to help people find items for their families. The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze® Long Island will run for 36 selected nights from September 22 through November 7. New displays this year include an 80-foot circus train--a nod to the 146-year run of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus at the nearby Nassau Coliseum, a sea monster and many new creative creatures from under the ocean. The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze® is also returning for its 17th year to its original location in the Hudson Valley at Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson. That location will be open 59 nights from September 17 through November 21 and will feature new displays such as an immersive river walk-through experience
and a New York City streetscape. The health and safety of our visitors is our highest priority. At both locations, the experience is outdoors and touch-free, and capacity has been reduced to ensure social distancing. Visitors who are not vaccinated are required to wear masks at all times. Masks are not required for vaccinated visitors while on the grounds, but will be required when entering buildings, such as restrooms. Old Bethpage Village Restoration is a living history museum owned and operated by Nassau County that provides guests the opportunity to step back in time to the island’s agrarian past. The Village consists of homes, barns and other buildings dating back to 1765. Costumed interpreters describe life as it was in the 19th century and historic trade smiths demonstrate various trades. We then had our Summer Dinner Meeting at the end of August at Umberto’s in Massapequa Park. They did a great job with the meal and the attendees enjoyed it very much. The next luncheon is September 23, 2021 at 12:00 Noon at Gusto Divino in Seaford, and we will be honoring the Nassau County Police Department officers from the Seventh and Eighth Precincts. We will also have a special guest speaker - Ray Moore, the father of Detective Brian Moore, will give a very inspirational talk about police work and the dangers of it. Please join us for what promises to be a great day to honor very deserving Police Officers. We just held the Grand Opening of Spanky’s Food Factory on Merrick Road in Massapequa Park. This food establishment will be a great addition to Massapequa. We wish the owner Chris well, and look forward to his enhancing the community. The Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce Businessperson of the Year Committee for our Chamber has met, and they have chosen Howard Ritzer and Massapequa Center Rehabilitation & Nursing for our honorees for the 2020 and 2021 awards. The ceremony will be held at the Crest Hollow Country Club with an awards breakfast at 8:00am. Congratulations to both winners.

It has been a very busy time for the Chamber, as we wrapped up the summer and now look forward to fall foliage and the cool weather. At this time, I must praise our own Tony Ventiera, Past President, for doing a fabulous job with our Annual Massapequa Community Street Festival on August 15th on lower Broadway. The weather was great, and we all had a great time with the people and vendors that participated. Our Grand Marshal, Town Supervisor Joe Saladino, was very gracious, and we were proud to honor him. Administrators Association of New York State and the Long Island STEM Education Leadership Association. In Massapequa he will oversee a “very talented team” of about 60 science teachers at the high school, Ames and Berner Middle School. He said his goals are to find even more opportunities for students to participate in science activities beyond the walls of Massapequa schools and to continue to grow the research program. “I’m very excited to be able to contribute my expertise in science to an already successful program,” he said. “I want to facilitate a love of science for our students and work with our teachers to help them succeed.” Mr. Cronk comes to Massapequa from the William Floyd School District, where he was a special education teacher and Committee on Special Education chairperson for 15 years. A secondgeneration educator, his mother was a teacher for three decades. He holds a bachelor’s degree in human relations

from St. Joseph’s College, a master’s degree in childhood and special education from C.W. Post and his administrative certification from the College of St. Rose, and is an active member of the Council of Administrators and Supervisors. In his new role, Mr. Cronk will supervise about 35 staff members at the high school and the Ames Campus, including teachers, teaching assistants, social workers and psychologists. One of his responsibilities will be to provide them with professional development opportunities. He will also work cooperatively with students, parents, teachers and pupil personnel services staff to ensure that students under his purview are receiving the proper level of support. Mr. Cronk said he is enthusiastic about working in a district that provides a wide range of resources for learners with special needs, noting that Massapequa is highly regarded for its Career and Community Connections program at the secondary level.

The Massapequa School District welcomes two new administrators at the secondary level for the 2021-2022 school year. Daniel Mezzafonte is the supervisor of science for grades 6-12 and Jeff Cronk is the secondary special education supervisor for Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses. Mr. Mezzafonte comes to Massapequa with 25 years of experience as a science teacher and administrator. He began his career at Richmond Hill High School in Queens before moving to Hewlett High School, where he taught science for eight years and coordinated the science research program. For the past 13 years, he was the science department chairman at Floral Park Memorial High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and environmental science from Binghamton University, a master’s degree in microbiology from New York University and his administrative certification from Stony Brook University. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Riders must download the Lyft app on a supported device and have an active Lyft account.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the Long Island State Park Region will be hosting the 36th Annual New York State Beach Cleanup in cooperation with the American Littoral Society and Sponsored by The Museum of American the National Heritage Trust. The International Coastal Cleanup is a global effort, under the Armor’s “The Road to international umbrella of the Ocean Conservancy, in which over 100 countries participate. Veterans and active duty personnel are free. A Parade Of History The Armor Museum hosts an operational collection of over forty armor vehicles including the mighty Hellcat tank destroyer, halftracks, armored cars similar to those that liberated the Nazi death camps, Vietnam era combat vehicles, and the massive
M48 Patton tank that would have confronted Soviet armor in the disastrous event the Cold War became an open conflict. The museum will also present operational replicas of several enemy vehicles as a dramatic reminder of the powerful forces that have faced America in its historic defense of democracy.
