housands of people were directly affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Millions more were glued to their televisions as they watched the news coverage of the attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and rural Pennsylvania.

After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12, 2011, and the museum, which opened on May 21, 2014. Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood. In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001. According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum archives the story of destruction that occured, but also represents the hope and camaraderie that the attacks spawned.

The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death.

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered

it to the recipient right in his hometown! The recipient was filled with joy and loves his new scooter.

They are presently looking for wish applicants in the Long Island area. Marching Band Revives The ’80s The 1980s will come to Massapequa High School this fall as the marching band is planning a show that will take audiences back in time three decades. Band members learned the music for the show at the annual marching band camp. This year’s ’80s rockthemed show will include three songs: “Dr. Feelgood” by the Mötley Crüe, “Any Way You Want it” by Journey and “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne. The band, accompanied by the Color Guard, will perform at home and playoff football games as well as the annual Newsday Marching Band Festival. “We wanted to do

something different,” said band co-director Andrew Dwork. “We haven’t done a rock show in 10 years. I think the students will really be into it and I think the audience will get involved.” Mr. Dwork and CoDirector Eva Marie Arnold were joined by elementary band teachers Gary Loock and Jessica Wyman, Berner Middle School band teacher Rob Giannotti, Ames Campus band director Michael Perticone and Color Guard director Andrea Gropf in helping students prepare for the show. The marching band consists of approximately 135 students in grades 10-12.

This year’s student drum majors are Sarah Benedict and Sean Buchanan, and the Color Guard captains are Colleen Giradin and Makayla Shanley. The three-day camp included marching formation drills on the football field, and music rehearsal in the school. Ms. Arnold said that rehearsals will continue once the school year begins, and the camp helps students get a head start on learning the music. There was also a little fun mixed in with a water balloon fight to close out one day, and a visit from a shaved ice truck another day.

Toddler Arts & Crafts Program

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town will offer a Toddler Arts & Crafts Program throughout the months of October, November, and December. This 8-week program will be held at the Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center and Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room, and is open to children ages 2 through 4. Registration begins September 18th, from 9 am to 3 pm, at the Town’s Parks Department Recreation Office in Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Rd, in Massapequa. “The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts program has proven to be an extremely popular one here in the Town, as it is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s development through nurturing their expression,” MARCHING BAND REVIVES THE ’80s - The 1980s will come to Massapequa artistic Saladino High School this fall as the marching band is planning a show that will take audiences Supervisor back in time three decades. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. A smock and supplies will be provided with enrollment. Toddler arts and crafts projects for this program can include season/holiday cards, ceramics, masks, and headpieces. The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is 8 weeks in duration, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take

place on Tuesdays at the Hicksville Athletic Center at 10 am (two year olds only) and 11 am (three and four year olds) beginning on Tuesday, October 8th. Classes will also take place on Wednesdays at the Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room at 10 am (two year olds only), 11 am (three and four year olds), or 1:30 pm (three and four year olds) beginning Wednesday, October 8th. Finally, classes will also take place on Thursday at the Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room at 10 am (two year olds only) or at 11 am (three and four year olds) beginning on Thursday, October 10.
