TOWN DEDICATES BASKETBALL COURT - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently dedicated a basketball court at Anchor Park in Massapequa in memory of Tyler James Abizeid, a beloved Massapequa teen who was only 14 years old when he passed away. Tyler, an avid sports fan, played basketball on the court being named in his honor the day he died. Tyler’s life was celebrated at a special dedication ceremony, including the gift of life he gave eight people through organ donation.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that the Lords of 52nd Street will play ‘one last summer blast’ drive-in concert at TOBAY Beach on Saturday, September 12th at 7:00 p.m. This free concert will offer Town residents one last chance to soak up summertime fun before the fall season arrives. The Lords of 52nd Street features the legends of The

Billy Joel Band, including Richie Cannata, Liberty DeVitto, and Russell Javors. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Lords of 52nd Street are legends of rock n’ roll and put on an amazing performance each time out, recreating all of Billy Joel’s indelible hits that they were originally a part of. County Executive Curran Launches Nassau Smart Sprinkler Reimbursement Program In an effort to promote long-term water conservation, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Legislator Siela A. Bynoe kicked off the “Smart Sprinkler” Reimbursement Program. Through the new County initiative, eligible Nassau County homeowners can apply for a partial reimbursement for the cost of installing weatherbased irrigation controller technology - commonly referred to as smart sprinkler systems - at their home. “This summer, as we go through an abnormally dry season, we are reminded of how important it is to conserve our precious water,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “Each summer, water usage goes up 400%. We can make a difference by changing our habits, and embracing technology to do the job for us. I hope this reimbursement encourages people to upgrade to a smarter lawn watering system, which will save water — and help

residents save money on their water bills.” “By incentivizing the use of proven water-saving technology, the Smart Sprinkler Reimbursement Program puts money back into the pockets of residents while supporting Nassau County’s ongoing efforts to conserve and protect our most precious natural resource,” said Nassau County Legislator Siela A. Bynoe. “I urge every eligible homeowner to take full advantage of this initiative - one that bolsters regional efforts to preserve our single-source aquifer as a reliable supply of clean, safe, and plentiful drinking water for future generations.” Qualified homeowners can receive up to a $150 credit toward the cost of installing a smart sprinkler system. The reimbursement program does not apply to residents who are already eligible through their water supplier for financial assistance in purchasing smart sprinkler technology. Rebates are drawn from a

$100,000 allocation and will be provided on a firstcome, first-served basis. Residents can apply for the reimbursement by visiting www. nassaucountyny.gov/1547/ consumer-affairs Weather-based irrigation controllers are equipped with smart water sensors that detect rainfall and prevent over-watering. Smart sprinkler systems supplement this data with a variety of metrics and data provided by the user to determine how fast water will evaporate from soil in a yard. Based on this information, smart sprinkler systems can break up watering times into smaller segments automatically to maximize efficiency, help water soak in, and reduce runoff. Smart sprinklers also monitor temperature, keep track of previous weather and adjust irrigation levels to meet the needs of each zone. These smart adaptations help save water and in turn save the homeowner money on their water bill.

Town Dedicates Basketball Court In Memory of Massapequa Teenage Organ Donor

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently dedicated a basketball court at Anchor Park in Massapequa in memory of Tyler James Abizeid, a beloved Massapequa teen who was only 14 years old when he passed away. Tyler, an avid sports fan, played basketball on the court being named in his honor the day he died. Tyler’s life was celebrated at a special dedication ceremony, including the gift of life he gave eight people through organ donation. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Tyler was an incredible young man, and all who knew him described him as a selfless person, always thinking of others. I am very proud to dedicate this basketball court in his

memory. The basketball court will be dedicated as “Tyler’s Court,” with the inscription ‘On This Court No One Stands Alone’ to commemorate Tyler’s approach to life, as he continuously gave to others and helped those in need even at the end of his life.” Tyler James Abizeid was born on September 15th, 2004, and lived in Massapequa and attended Massapequa High School. The only child of Jessica and Anthony Abizeid, Tyler had a passion for sports, especially basketball, and could usually be found out here on the court in Anchor Park in Massapequa working on his game. With a heart of gold, in his short 14 years, Tyler continuously gave to others, and carried himself

as someone much older and wiser than a boy his age. “Although Tyler was called home far too soon, leaving a void of incredible sadness with his friends, family, and community, Tyler’s parents chose to honor his memory in the best way possible and celebrated his amazing life and selfless attitude by deciding to donate his organs, changing 8 other people’s lives forever,” Supervisor Saladino added. “Tyler’s legacy will forever live on through this amazing decision, and it is only appropriate that in death as in life, Tyler was a giver, constantly working to make other’s lives better through his words and actions.”

Long Island’s Largest 9/11 Service To Be Held In Safe, Socially Distant Manner Friday, September 11, 7:30 a.m. It has been a difficult time for many, as the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way in which we have been permitted to assemble for a host of services, ceremonies, activities and events. While some governments have decided to scale back their September 11th ceremonies in the face of the Coronavirus, the Town of Hempstead has decided to move ahead with Long Island’s iconic seaside 9/11 memorial program. Hosted by Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and the Town Board, friends, neighbors, clergy, family members of victims and all of those impacted by the events

of September 11th will gather in a socially distanced and safe manner for a sunrise ceremony that will salute the heroes of 9/11. The program will feature a speech by a family member of a late NYPD detective who died of a 9/11-related illness, and was known for his advocacy for fellow heroes of September 11th. Hempstead Town’s 9/11 Memorial Park includes ocean views, an elevated memorial walkway, a 30-foottall beam from the north tower of the World Trade Center, and a giant memorial table inscribed with Walt Whitman’s “On

the Beach at Night.” The names of victims are etched on the monument and a directional plaque points to the location of the once majestic Twin Towers. Memorial Park is located at Town Park Point Lookout, Lido Boulevard, Point Lookout, NY (intersection of Loop Parkway and Lido Boulevard) The beachside 9/11 memorial plays a special role in the lives of many Long Island neighbors, who were drawn to the beachfront in the wake of the terrorist attacks, looking westward in disbelief to the location where the majestic twin towers once stood.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 8.8 million young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 report having a mental illness. Curran Announces 19th Annual Remembrance And Recitation Ceremony For Victims Of 9/11

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that Nassau County will commemorate the 19th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a Remembrance and Recitation of Names Ceremony on Thursday, September 10th, beginning at 4:30 pm

at the 9/11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park. While all are invited to honor those lost in-person, due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, residents are encouraged to attend this year’s ceremony virtually by watching live on the County’s website: N a s s a u c o u n t y n y. g o v / September11. During

the ceremony, access to the 9/11 Memorial will be prioritized for family members of the victims of the attacks, along with first responders who continue to make sacrifices to secure our freedom and safety. “The passing of time will not dim the memory of that day or

weaken the spirit of our residents and heroic first responders,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “We will honor the bravery and heroism shown by our firstresponders and everyday people who stepped up during a time of crisis, while commemorating and reflecting on those

we lost and continue to lose.” The Remembrance Ceremony will include surviving family members reading of names of residents who lost their lives in the attacks. The 9/11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park features plaques inscribed with the

names of the 348 Nassau County victims who lost their lives on that day, along with two semitransparent aluminum towers, representing the World Trade Center towers, and two pieces of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.

Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. Town Reunites Near-Drowning Victims with Heroic Rescuer Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reunited near-drowning victims Vincent and Joseph LaGrega with Christopher Madden of Hicksville. A heroic rescuer and Town Highway employee, Christopher saved the lives of two teenagers after

spotting them struggling in the strong currents of the Great South Bay. “Our community takes great pride in recognizing the amazing actions of Christopher Madden, who displayed heroism during a time of crisis,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Christopher’s quick thinking and courageous actions saved these teenagers lives and had he

not responded as he did, the outcome would have been tragically different. Christopher Madden is not only a Good Samaritan, but an exemplary Town of Oyster Bay employee. We commend him for this lifesaving rescue.” 17 year-old Vincent LaGrega and his family were boating and attempted to anchor closer to the shore in the choppy water of the

Great South Bay. Vincent jumped into the water in an attempt to swim to the beach and underestimated the extremely challenging conditions. He was soon struggling and drifting further away from the boat, clearly in immediate danger of drowning. Vincent’s brother, Joseph, jumped into the water hoping to save him, but soon both boys were in a weakened

condition and being pummeled by the waves. At that moment, Christopher Madden spotted the boys and jumped onto a jet ski to rescue both of the boys who were gasping for air at this point. Christopher was able to bring the two boys back to the boat, and Vincent’s family credits Christopher’s actions with saving their son’s life that day.
