Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board has announced that a Remembrance Ceremony for the victims of the September 11, 2001 Attacks on America will take place on Thursday, September 9th at 7 p.m. at TOBAY Beach. A 9/11 Light Tribute will illuminate the skies along the shoreline in memory of those lost that tragic September morning. At the ceremony, the Town will unveil new names inscribed on to the Walls of Honor that recently lost their battle with 9/11 illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero. The September 9th ceremony includes bagpipe music, religious readings and remarks by family members of the victims. The Town’s 9/11 Memorial - featuring a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center - is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11,

Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-profit organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give. This non-profit was founded in 1965 by Reverend J.A. Gaines, his wife, Reverend Rose Marie Gaines, and her mother, Florence E. Meringola. After witnessing local poverty conditions first hand, they invested everything that they had with the view that if they could help even one person it was worth the investment! They worked very hard and sacrificed much to build a strong community and leave a great legacy to be carried on. Their prayer was that the Helping Hand Rescue Mission would remain a “lighthouse” in our community. 56 years later, their work continues under the direction of the founders’ daughter, Rev. Kimberly Gaines-Gambino, who functions as the President/Pastor of this organization. She has also served as Pastor of Half Hollow Community Church in Dix Hills from 2011-2019, however she resigned from that position in January of 2020 to devote more of her time to the work of HHRM. She is a wife to her husband Andrew and mom & stepmom to five amazing kids. How does HHRM serve others? Feeding The Hungry: HHRM serves approximately 200-300 families per week with non-perishable items and fresh produce, fruit, meat, eggs, milk and bread. Since March 21, 2020, they have given out over 27,000 food bags to people in need on Long Island. HHRM partners with many schools, organizations, temples, churches, youth organizations, civic organizations, clubs, businesses, and

the many individuals and families donating to our pantry to gather food for the hungry. School Supply Distribution: Every child deserves to have the supplies they need for their education, feel confident in a room with their peers and be prepared for their school year. This non-profit gathers and distributes school supplies to local children that are in need. Baby Blessings: Baby Blessings is a part of HHRM that focuses on providing families with children under 3 years old with diapers, baby clothes, other baby supplies and a brunch! Baby Blessings is hosted at Huntington Assembly of God every third Tuesday of the month. HHRM is so thankful to partner with Family Service League, the Allied Foundation and Huntington Assembly of God to make Baby Blessings possible. Community Closet: HHRM runs something called the Community Closet, which provides new and gently used seasonallyappropriate clothing to anyone in need during it’s hours of operation. Appropriate clothing can be a genuinely difficult expense for families, especially since most have children that are always growing. Helping Hand Rescue Mission also holds various other outreach programs, some of which are seasonal. There are many ways you can volunteer with, donate to or receive help from HHRM. of Philip and Rene Renna’s daughter Christina, a Long Island teenager who died in January 2007 from a rare soft tissue cancer. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting children’s cancer research and furthering awareness and education through the support of cancer groups and outreach programs for those

Approximately one hundred names have recently been added to the cemetery’s September 11th Memorial. The memorial, a beautiful black marble sculpture that is the center piece of a specially designated area of the cemetery which was set aside for victims of the terrorist attacks, was erected in 2003. The memorial currently displays the names of 414 individuals who were victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. Newly added names include both those who passed away on 9/11 and individuals who worked at Ground Zero and succumbed to related illnesses, bringing the number of those to be remembered on the memorial on the day of the Mass to approximately 500 in total. “As we mark the 20th year since 9-11, we know that many people remain profoundly impacted. This special Mass led by Bishop Barres is an important event on this solemn day. It is important that we remember the victims of the attacks, those who rushed to their aid and all who selflessly gave of themselves afterwards at Ground Zero, suffering years of chronic health conditions and related illnesses. Our memorial wall at Holy Rood Cemetery is a place of solace,
reflection and tribute to the lives that were tragically lost. We welcome all to visit the memorial at any time, including joining us at this remembrance mass,” said Richard Bie, CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. If hours of fishing followed by a tailgate party with food, raffles, awards and prizes sounds like a perfect day to you, then you’ll want to sign up immediately for the 35th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 12th and hosted by Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board. “The Bluefish Tournament is a great all-day sporting event with wonderful prizes and great camaraderie,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Join us for this fun day of tranquility on the water, the adrenaline rush of feeling that first big tug on your fishing line and the spirit of competition as you try to beat the tournament record of 19.75 pounds.” The tournament runs from 4:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is open to anglers of all ages. All contestants must be pre-registered. The entrance fee for the tournament is $35 for Town
of Oyster Bay residents and $50 for non-residents. Registration is limited to the first 350 boats, so sign up early. All those who register before September 6th will receive a tournament t-shirt. All contestants will automatically be entered in a special raffle, with great prizes. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is holding a remembrance Mass for families of victims, first responders and Ground Zero workers as part of the 20th year remembrance of the September 11th 2001 Terrorist Attacks on America. The Mass will be led by Bishop John O. Barres, of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. This special service will be held outside at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood’s 9/11 Memorial. The Mass will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, beginning at 1 p.m. Attendees are asked to arrive by 12:30 p.m. Family members and members of the Long Island Community and the public are welcome and encouraged to attend. Seating will be limited, and not guaranteed. Recognizing that some family members may be elderly and/or need assistance, those attending are urged to plan in advance and consider arriving early. Parking may be some distance from the September 11th Memorial where the outdoor Mass will be held. They met the summer of 1983 at the East Meadow Jewish Center bingo when Lynda came to the weekly bingo with her Mom (Lenora) and Howard was the bingo caller. They enjoyed their first date at the movies, but Lynda was already moving to California to pursue her career. Six months later Lynda moved back to NY and returned to bingo in Feb’84. When Howard saw Lynda he didn’t think twice and asked for a date. So in Feb. 1984 they were reunited and dated for a year before getting engaged in the fall of 1985. Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation Awards Grant To Montauk Point Lighthouse The Montauk Historical Society (MHS) has announced receipt of a grant of $390,700 from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation for the restoration of the iconic 225-year-old sandstone and brick Montauk Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse, commissioned in 1792 by President George Washington, was built in 1796 and has served as an aid to navigation ever since. Citing high maintenance costs, the U.S. Coast Guard considered abandoning the historic structure and replacing it with a skeletal tower and light. Instead, they agreed to sell it to the Montauk Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Coast Guard still maintains the beacon, visible over 19 nautical miles, but care of the grounds, and maintenance and repair of the buildings, are the sole responsibility of MHS. “We are able to fund the everyday interior and exterior upkeep of the lighthouse through entry fees, gift-shop sales, and private donations,” said Dick White, MHS Treasurer and Chair of the Lighthouse Committee. “But when substantial restoration work needs to be done, we have to seek other ways to fund it. We are immensely grateful to the Gardiner Foundation for stepping up to help us save this National Historic Landmark.” Construction professionals on the MHS Board had been monitoring worsening water damage on the exterior and interior of the lighthouse tower, and in 2016 and 2017, they commissioned
feasibility and engineering studies to determine the causes and extent of the damage. “For centuries, the lighthouse has been exposed to the most extreme weather conditions,” said Nick Racanelli, construction expert and MHS Board member. “We found that the lantern and its metal work had begun to deteriorate, allowing water to pour into the cavity between the inner and outer walls of the tower, where it froze and thawed. This led to cracking, bulging and spalling of the historic sandstone, which was aggravated by previous repairs that used hard cement, further weakening the stone.” The MHS Board made the decision to proceed immediately with a full restoration, before the integrity of the 18th-century tower was compromised. They completed the first phase of work in 2020, repairing the metal work to minimize further water infiltration. The second phase of work calls for stripping the structure of its many layers of existing coatings, repointing all the joints with lime-putty mortar, and repairing the damaged stone and brickwork. “Phase Two is the most extensive and expensive phase of the restoration, and this is where the Gardiner Foundation will make a huge difference,” said Racanelli. “Getting a large grant like this allows us to complete these vital repairs, while continuing to keep our museum open and offer our visitors interesting and exciting programming. It makes all the difference.” “The history of the Montauk Lighthouse as an original welcoming beacon to New York coupled with its striking presence makes an iconic symbol not only of Long Island but of hope and safe harbor to millions,” said Kathryn Curran, Executive Director of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation. “The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation's mission is to promote the advancement of our regional history. We are delighted to be working with the Montauk Historical Society on the restoration of this important historic structure.” Established in 1987, the Robert David Lion
Gardiner Foundation primarily supports the study of Long Island history. Robert David Lion Gardiner was, until his death in August 2005, the 16th Lord of the Manor of Gardiner’s Island, NY. The Gardiner family and their descendants have owned Gardiner’s Island since 1639, obtained as part of a royal grant from King Charles I of England.
