New Teachers Welcomed The Massapequa School District formally welcomed more than 20 educators at its two-day new teacher orientation on August 22nd-23rd in the Teacher Learning Center at McKenna Elementary School. Many of the new faculty members are joining the district for the first time, while others are moving into permanent positions. They will teach a variety of subjects and grade levels throughout Massapequa’s nine schools.
Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis greeted the teachers and asked them to share the reasons they decided to enter the education profession. She read the book “Mrs. Spitzer’s Garden” to inspire them to become the kinds of teachers who help their students grow and flourish. Teachers received their Chromebooks and learned about the advantages of the district’s 1:1 Learning Anytime, Anywhere initiative that provides students in

grades 3-12 with their own devices. They were also able to meet the district’s technology learning coaches, who will work with them to integrate technology into classroom instruction. Each teacher received an inspirational poster for their classroom, with messages such as “Attitude is a little thing that can make a big difference,” “Mistakes are proof that you are trying” and “Believe you can and you will.”

It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the field. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task
of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week. I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a fixture at the old Lindenhurst office. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design. Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.
At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it. Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience. What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

Children turned their imaginations into creations at Camp Invention, a national science and technology camp hosted by the Massapequa School District each summer. This year’s program was held from August 13thAugust 17th at McKenna Elementary School and was open to students entering first through sixth grades. This year’s theme was “Fast Forward” and the young scientists rotated through different centers each day. In Optibot, students learned about sensors, and designed tracks for the small robots to follow. They had to create an underwater scene in which their moving robot would activate a motion sensor and turn on a light. Robotic Pet Vet had children exploring robot
dogs to diagnose problems. Each student constructed a dog park and got to decorate their own robot to take home. Mod My Mini Mansion had students exploring alternative energy solutions to power their small homes. In Stick to It, they had to come up with inventions to solve different challenges, such as making a contraption to pick up coins. The young creators could find much of what they needed in the Inventor Supply Room, a classroom filled with cardboard boxes, newspapers, string and plastic containers of all shapes and sizes. “Camp Invention is a wonderful opportunity for children to not only explore scientific concepts, but to work together as a team,”

said program coordinator Elizabeth Natke. “It’s just a fun way to learn.” In addition to the teachers running each center, Camp Invention was supported by high school counselors and middle school counselorsin-training. Students Mean Business Seven incoming seniors at Massapequa High School participated in the 2018 Molloy College Business Boot Camp this summer. The weeklong program offers students the opportunity to explore the business field by participating in interactive seminars with

The signage is located at the Towers of Freedom 9/11 Military Monument in John Burns Park. Daniel’s goal was to increase awareness of this beautiful monument that is dedicated to those who gave their lives that day and to honor first responders, firefighters, police officers and military servicemen.
Molloy’s executive-based faculty, career coaching and multiple learning opportunities. Among the activities were trading simulations, business presentations, marketing competitions and “Shark Tank”-style sales pitches. Almost 300 students from more than 30 high
schools were interviewed for Boot Camp, and only 72 students were selected. Massapequa participants included Stephen Benson, Alexis Florio, Katlyn Lizzio, Joseph Misita, Paul Oddo, Vincent Prato and Nick Rende.
