Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town will offer a Toddler Arts & Crafts Program throughout the months of October, November, and December. This 8-week program will be held at the Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center and Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room, and is open to children ages 2 through 4. Registration begins September 18th, from 9 am to 3 pm, at the Town’s Parks Department Recreation Office in Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Rd, in Massapequa. “The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts program has proven to be an extremely popular one here in the Town, as it is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s development through nurturing their artistic expression,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I urge those who wish for their toddler to
participate to come down and register beginning Wednesday, September 18, as this 8-week program fills quickly on a first come first serve basis” Each class is about 30 minutes to an hour long. The cost of the program is $25 per child who is a Town resident, and $30 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. A smock and supplies will be provided with enrollment. Toddler arts and crafts projects for this program can include season/holiday cards, ceramics, masks, and headpieces. The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is 8 weeks in duration, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child.

Classes will take place on Tuesdays at the Hicksville Athletic Center at 10 am (two year olds only) and 11 am (three and four year olds) beginning on Tuesday, October 8th. Classes will also take place on Wednesdays at the Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room at 10 am (two year olds only), 11 am (three and four year olds), or 1:30 pm (three and four year olds) beginning Wednesday, October 8th. Finally, classes will also take place on Thursday at the Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room at 10 am (two year olds only) or at 11 am (three and four year olds) beginning on Thursday, October 10. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology
departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. The Social Brain would like to thank all who came out to the Basket Night Fundraiser on Friday, August 16th. They raised $2,600 and received another $900 in corporate donations! Additionally, they just wrapped up their East End 4-Week Social Skills Sessions. These were successful and helped children and young adults from Patchogue to as far east as Sag Harbor. They completed fun projects and encouraged a team approach to complete each week’s classes. They would like to give a special thanks to Peconic Speech Services of Riverhead for collaborating with their organization to host these classes. Keep your eye out for another set of classes coming during this upcoming school year. Technology learning coaches in the Massapequa School District have been busy, visiting fifth grade classes at the six elementary schools to prepare students for the transition to Berner Middle School in regards to the 1:1 Chromebook initiative. While students have had their own assigned devices in their classrooms for the last three years, they will get to take home their Chromebooks each night beginning in sixth
grade. This will provide students with easier access to their middle school coursework. In addition to receiving a take-home device, each student gets a charger and case. They will be also be allowed to use their Chromebooks over the summer to become acclimated with the hardware, software and apps. Technology learning coaches and computer teaching assistants worked with fifth graders to set up passwords for their email
accounts and program logins. They emphasized the importance of creating strong passwords that have different components including upper and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. District technology staff also taught students how to care for their devices and reminded them that it should be charged every night at home so there is enough battery life for it to be used at school the following day.

This year marks the 25 year anniversary for American Black Belt Academy, located at 4875 Merrick Road in Massapequa. Started in 1994 by Tom and Lorraine LoVarco as a small modest Karate school located in Massapequa Park it has grown today to be one of the largest most diverse schools in the country. “We started in a small 900 square foot location were I taught all the classes and my wife Lorraine was the office manager,” says Tom LoVarco. Our enrollment began to grow quickly and our students were competing in National tournaments and doing very well. The school started to be recognized for producing top rated
competitors. Changing locations several times in the same area the size of the school is nearly 10 times larger than when it opened. And since opening, the facility has expanded into offering not only high quality American Kenpo classes for kids and adults but now offers a full fitness program, Kids BJJ and MMA, Kickboxing and a Martial Arts After School Program with transportation from all the schools in the Massapequa School District. A full day Martial Arts camp is even available during the summer. They also host two large Karate tournaments each year. Now joined by their children Chris and Danielle along with an amazing
staff of instructors and assistants the school is very organized and extremely professional. The location has 3 large classrooms that gives the ability to offer over 80 classes each week. Allowing for convenient class times and the detailed separation of ages and experience level. The story doesn’t end here. Plans for the future of American Black Belt are still in the making. Beach Concert For A Cause Massapequa High School students raised nearly $2,500 to benefit children battling cancer at the recent Catch A Wave fundraiser. The donation was presented to the pediatric oncology department at Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center. Senior Molly Guarton, who was a patient at the facility more than 10 years ago, initiated the fundraiser as a way of giving back to an organization that helped her through a very difficult time in her life. She was diagnosed with leukemia at 2 ½ years old and was successfully treated at Cohen’s. Molly
graduated from high school and is headed to college in the fall. Catch A Wave was a beachthemed musical fundraiser that provided an opportunity for students to showcase their varied and incredible musical talents while helping others. This year’s show featured 31 acts. Students made donations to hear their friends perform. In addition, the central hallway of the school became a “boardwalk” where Massapequa High School clubs sold items to raise additional funds for the cause. The Dog Rescue Club
sold dog treats and human treats and the Gay Straight Alliance sold rainbow colored leis in honor of Pride month. There were also numerous raffle baskets and other prizes donated by students. When it was time for the concert, students sat on beach towels on the gymnasium floor and had their own beach party. “It was very important to Molly and her friends to do something to give back to the hospital that helped save Molly’s life,” health education coordinating chairperson Denise Baldinger said.

A Spirited Summer Science Camp Scores of eager young scientists were engaged in a week of design and discovery at Camp Invention, hosted by the Massapequa School District at McKenna Elementary School. The program was open to students entering grades 1-6. Camp Invention, which is sponsored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame and is hosted at sites throughout the country each summer, inspires children to become innovators and problemsolvers while working collaboratively with their peers. At McKenna, students rotated through five stations. In Deep Sea Mystery, they excavated fossils, built a Polaris projector and created sea-worthy vessels. DoIt-Yourself Robot allowed students to take apart robots to see how they work, before building courses for their devices to traverse. In Farm Tech, students
had to create a farm that relies entirely on machines by building creations such as catapults to launch hay. They become superheroes in Innovation Force, making their own superhero capes. The focus of that workshop was on inventions, as children created grabbers to retrieve their ideas, which were stolen by a villain named the Plagiarizer. Camp Invention Games featured fun activities that had scientific elements. For one game, students made devices that could protect a water balloon, and then dropped their contraptions about 15 feet to see if their balloons stayed intact. Cameron Garcia, entering fourth grade at McKenna Elementary School, has attended Camp Invention for several years and likes that they are new activities each year. He also likes making friends from other schools as they work together on different projects.
Lockhart Elementary School fifth grader Lauren Clark, who has come to Camp Invention every summer since kindergarten, said that the workshops help her with science and technology in school. There were 20 high school-aged counselors and volunteers, along with 10 middle school-aged leaders in training. Ms. Natke said her amazing team of teachers and student helpers is what makes the program so successful. Incoming seventh grader Ryan Lepre, after attending the program for two years as a camper, is now a Leader-in-Training and hopes to become a counselor when he enters high school. Senior Juliette Liebov is in her third year as a counselor and this was joined on staff by her younger brother Damien. She supervised a group of first and second graders.
