Mayoral Candidate TAKES ON PSEG

The Nassau County Legislators, who sat on the Superstorm Sandy Committee, were going to conduct a hearing into the failures of PSEG with company COO Daniel Eichhorn and CIO Faisal Bhatti on Monday August 17 and it was open to the public, I intended to be there and share my story along with those of my neighbors who couldn’t attend. A video of the full meeting can be seen on the Nassau County government website. Mr Eichhorn extolled how they prepared for the storm by beefing up their staff. The normal line workers range from 200 to 500 workers. He claimed he hired 2000 workers only 1600 showed up. On my phone, PSEG texted days later that they had 4000 workers out in the field. FALSE. After he gave an opening statement on how they were so prepared for the storm they were taken aback by the amount of damage the storm created leaving a path of destruction in its wake.

After an hour of questions by the various legislators it was apparent by his own admission did he not have answers to the questions with the multiple responses “I don’t know, I don’t have that information, I’ll have to get back to you on that.” One interesting comment Eichhorn made was the following, “ In this storm, what we found is when our crews were out working , instead of finding one damaged location to restore a neighborhood it was multiple damaged locations. Those models that we were using proved to be much more optimistic than what our crews were seeing in this damage.” I learned some interesting facts from the meeting. PSEG actually has a list of vulnerable customers who are on oxygen, in a wheel chair and who have devices to survive that require power. This was news to not only me but to the legislators. How accurate and effective this is still to be determined. Many of their promises rang hollow. There was a discussion about smart meters of which 65% ( 625,000 of the I million customers have) which is supposed to send an alert to PSEG automatically when the power is out. Clearly that didn’t happen. In fact there was a colossal trifecta of failure of communication by phone, text and e mail. There also appeared to be a lot of finger pointing to Verizon for communication problems, In short their system overloaded and they had no backup plan to cope with the overwhelming emergency calls. They clearly in spite of their boasts were not prepared. What was infuriating, to most of us was the misinformation given to the community. There were texts sent out that promised restoration of power by a certain date. False. Maps showing power restoration were incorrect. When line workers showed up they often sat there for hours because they had no direction as to what to do or lacked the necessary supplies. When out of state workers arrived to help they also lacked clear direction as to where and what they were supposed to do. For days traffic lights were out making driving dangerous. After an hour on the hot seat I had my chance to speak directly to Mr. Eichhorn. I shared with him my story of the live wire and my inability to get anyone from PSEG, for days. My wire wasn’t taken down by a tree, it exploded. When they did come days later it was a 30 minute fix. I shared with him and the committee as a military physician we were always prepared for disasters and had back up plans. I had lived through earthquakes in Japan, Continued On Page 5

When the warnings came about tropical Isaias I was prepared. I had a freezer full of food, multiple battery operated lanterns, even a battery operated fan. PSEG sent me a text on how prepared they were for the upcoming storm and sent me a text about their special app which was designed for customers to report power outages. They informed me that they had hired additional workers ready to go to handle any problems. I had faith that this company was going to deliver on its promises, boy was I wrong. When the storm quickly rolled through Long Island with very little rain but high winds, in a two hour span it left 420,000 customers without power. I was one of them. At 1:20 pm I heard an explosion and lost power. A live wire was sparking on my roof. I called PSEG couldn’t get through, texted the app didn’t work, called 911 busy, called the 7th precinct no one showed, called the fire department they drove right by my home to another sight, called multiple times to the village hall which claimed to be open even though its doors to the public were closed, no answer. I was on my own as I watched the wire dance and spark across the street and finally rest at the curb. I kept calling and texting PSEG to no avail. With temperatures soaring, it registered 85 degrees in my home. I slept in my car for the next five days. I even drove down to the PSEG office in Seaford in the hope of finding someone only to find, like the village hall it was closed with the excuse of COVID. Two weeks later thousands of Long Islanders were still without power, many seniors were trapped in their sweltering apartments with no way to power their devices.

Continued From Page 3 tornados in Oklahoma and Texas which are unexpected events with no warning unlike hurricanes which can be tracked way in advance. PSEG couldn’t handle a small storm, how were they going to handle a major storm.

I discussed the number of seniors living in our community often by themselves and how vulnerable they are when they can’t call for help and especially when they depend on stair lifts, emergency devices, oxygen powered devices all requiring power. In Texas I never lost power because our wires are underground. Here we have wooden poles that are more than 60 years old and all they do is prop them up with metal girdles. When one legislator commented that she heard some poles snapped Eichhorn claimed he had no knowledge of that. I assured him that it was true and I had photos on my phone to prove it.

I shared with him my story of living in my car, trying repeatedly with no success to reach PSEG. Finally my power was restored and ironically for the next two days I started receiving text messages from them that my power should be restored in the next two days. Before my time was up I asked him one question. “ Mr. Eichhorn did you have power?” He didn’t answer at first looked down and then I repeated the question. “For my own edification sir, did you have power?” His response, “Yes.” I concluded that he needs to come back to the legislatures present with the answers he didn’t have and how he plans to improve his delivery of services. Look I know I am one voice, one customer, but I intend to keep fighting for the rights of the community to get the services we pay for considering we are one of the most expensive

Another issue I brought up was the idea of decentralizing the power company. In Texas we have many electrical companies who compete for our business. On Long Island we have a New Jersey company run by executives who don’t even live here and we are at the mercy of a monopoly that has a laisse faire attitude about quality of service. Rockville center and Freeport have their own electric service so they really do not run into this problem. They are prepared. With such an abysmal delivery of service to our communities we should really consider getting rid of monopolies. Unfortunately the legislators have no power over this only Cuomo and we all know how that went during COVID.

Blood Donations to Help Replenish Supplies Amid Coronavirus Public Health Crisis Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier have announced a partnership with the New York Blood Center to collect donations on Thursday, September 3, 2020 to help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic. The Blood Drive will take place from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. “Blood donations are extremely important during normal times to

Now, during this pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled tremendously and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest upcoming drive in our local area, will be critical to help our local hospitals meet demand and continue their life-saving operations during these extraordinary times,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Please consider participating in this blood drive and help bolster our blood banks so that as many people as possible can be helped.”

The Town’s Blood Drive will operate by appointment only, with no walk-in donations accepted. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors. To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended

that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. “Donating blood is a quick, easy, and safe process, and the pint of blood you donate will never be missed from your body, as it is quickly reproduced within your body,” Councilman Labriola added. “If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our local hospitals can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.” For information, contact the Town Board Office at (516) 624-6304.

How To Support Scholastic Athletes The 2020-21 school year promises to be one unlike any other today’s students, and even their parents and grandparents, have ever known. In March 2020, many schools were forced to abruptly cancel in-person instruction as government officials tried to prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. As the 201920 school year wound down and summer approached, school officials remained uncertain if they would reopen for in-person instruction in the fall, leaving student-athletes to wonder what would happen to fall sports seasons. The cancellation of in-person school sessions and extracurricular activities was hard on every student, and athletes have proven no exception. Many graduating seniors did not get a chance to compete alongside their teammates during spring sports season, bringing their scholastic athletic careers to an abrupt end. With the upcoming 2020-21 scholastic sports season in similar limbo, student-athletes in the class of 2021 might be worried that their own chances to compete are in jeopardy as well. In light of that, local communities can take steps to support scholastic athletes during an uncertain time. • Make a show of your support. Stayat-home measures prevented many schools from hosting traditional graduation ceremonies for graduating seniors. However, many communities found ways to honor their grads, and they can do the same for scholastic

Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material. Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help! Town Presents Susan B. Anthony Leadership Award To Bernadette Castro Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently honored Bernadette Castro with the Susan B. Anthony Leadership Award in recognition of her influential achievements that have inspired countless women. The award was presented on the 100th Anniversary of women’s suffrage, as the Town commended the centennial of the fight for women’s rights being heard and ratified by the 19th Amendment. “Women involved in ensuring equal rights paved the way for other Rosie the Riveter types to follow in their footsteps,” said Supervisor Saladino. “People like Susan B. Anthony were influential leaders who made a true difference, and Bernadette Castro is also a role model who deserves our highest recognition for her charitable work, public service, and success in the private sector.” Bernadette Castro’s involvement with the furniture enterprise Castro Convertibles started long before she became its

Chairwoman and COO. Bernadette started in the family business at only four years old, when she famously became the most televised child in America after appearing in the brand’s iconic television commercials. And she never looked back. She remained involved ever since, improving the brand and ultimately taking the reins of the company following her father’s passing and eventually relaunching the legendary brand. While her involvement in the business world is certainly something to be recognized, she’s gone so far beyond that as a trailblazer. Bernadette served as the Commissioner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation a cabinet post she held for 12 years. Under her tenure, the state preserved more than one million acres of land. Her vast preservation efforts helped protect drinking water and secured thousands of acres of forest space. She also secured the US Open for Bethpage State Park - the first time the Open was ever held at

a public golf course. Her great work earned her an appointment of Vice Chair of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation by United States President George W. Bush. Her efforts were also recognized by the National Recreation and Park Association, which designated New York State Parks as the country’s best state parks system. Bernadette’s passion for protecting the environment extends to her community and charity involvement, which even further extends to great organizations such as Tomorrow’s Hope Found, the Interfaith Nutrition Network, and the New York Landmarks Conservancy – to name just a few. “It is truly an honor not only to recognize Bernadette Castro for her many great accomplishments, but more importantly to thank her for all her efforts in protecting our environment,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “All of the difference she has made in our parks system will allow for them to be enjoyed and treasured for many generations to come.”

Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca recently announced that residents who wish to deter any potential door-to-door solicitors and peddlers can obtain a free, waterproof, vinyl ‘No Soliciting’ sticker through the Town Clerk’s Office. Town Clerk LaMarca stated, “Now more than ever, our Town residents wish to remain unbothered at home by the potential nuisance of door-to-door peddlers. My office offers free ‘No Soliciting’ stickers to homeowners as a way to set clear boundaries with anyone approaching your home looking to do unwanted business. Contact us today for a free sticker.”

For residential customers,

food spoilage claims of $150 or less must include an itemized list. Food spoilage claims over $150 must include an itemized list and proof of loss (for example: cash register tapes, store or credit card receipts, canceled checks or photographs of spoiled items). Separately, customers will be reimbursed for losses, up to a maximum of $300, for prescription medications

that spoiled due to lack of refrigeration. Customers must provide an itemized list of the medications and proof of loss (for example: pharmacy prescription label or pharmacy receipt identifying the medicine). Commercial customers applying for reimbursement must supply an itemized list of spoiled food and proof of loss (invoices, inventory lists, bank statements).

PSEG Long Island to Reimburse Customers for Food and Medicines Customers can apply for reimbursement at www. psegliny.com/claims. The reimbursement claims cannot be processed over the phone. Customers will have until Sept. 16, 2020 to file claims. Reimbursement is expected to take up to 60 business days from when a proper claim form is completed and submitted to PSEG Long Island.

Factors To Consider When Setting Up A School Carpool

Getting kids to and from school can be a challenge for working parents. School start times do not always coordinate with parents’ work schedules, and school typically lets out before parents’ workdays end. Carpools are one way parents confront the challenge posed by juggling work and family. With a new school year approaching, parents can take the following factors into consideration as they work to establish carpools. • Determine your insurance needs. Before planning carpools, parents who plan to participate should contact their auto insurance providers to make sure their policies cover driving others. The organizer of the carpool should make sure every parent does this prior to

the school year. Some parents may need to purchase supplemental insurance, and each parent should be willing to provide proof of their insurance as well. • Reach out to parents in your neighborhood. A carpool that is neighborhood-based as opposed to one that is based more on students’ social circles will likely prove more convenient for parents. A carpool with neighbors means parents won’t have to drive far to pick up and/or drop off other students, saving everyone valuable time each day. • Don’t go overboard. Even if your minivan or SUV can seat half a dozen children, you may want to limit the carpool to a more manageable number of youngsters. Getting kids up and out the door each morning is a challenge when there’s just one youngster

involved, let alone several. By limiting a carpool to between two and four children, parents won’t have to worry about too many hiccups during their morning routines. • Discuss early closures and other unique days in advance. School schedules tend to be the same throughout the year, but there are various times when early closures can affect carpools. This is especially true for parents with children who attend different schools. When planning a carpool, discuss early closure dates with other parents and develop a plan for how to manage pickup. School carpools are convenient for working parents. Planning prior to the school year is a great way to ensure carpools are successful.
