The stories that unfold in the space of a writer’s study, the objects chosen to watch over a desk, the books selected to sit on the shelves, all weave a web of echoes and reﬂections of meanings and affections, that lend a visitor the illusion that something of the owner of this space lives on between these walls, even if the owner is no more. {Alberto Manguel} From the day I began working at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers some 13-plus years ago, my desk and the meticulousness with which I chose to decorate, maintain and arrange it has been a topic of some fascination among my coworkers, the joke being that if someone dared to move a pencil or paper clip even a fraction of an inch, I would notice immediately. While this may be a bit extreme, the characterization is pretty darn close. I have always subscribed to the mantra of “a place for everything, and everything in its place,” mostly because I felt the sense of

organization allowed me to better focus on the {many} tasks at hand in the fast-paced, deadlinedriven environment of a weekly publication. Folders and filing systems aside, though, the true character is represented by the many knick-knacks and personal touches which accent my area. Only now, as I prepare to pack up my belongings at the close of the month {a task I intend to put off until the very last moment, as we can’t have things looking “empty” for even a day}, have I really taken the time to appreciate all the memories associated with these special tokens accumulated through the years. There is the mug given to me by my mentor and very special friend Peter, who saw fit to take me under his wing from day one and gently nudge me into the spotlight with what would become the makings of this very column. There is the silk ﬂoral arrangement from my Mom, with the hand-written note, “A little touch of springtime for your desk, along with wishes for many happy days at your new

job,” a fixture from the very beginning. There is the photo of my friend Rose on our very first trip to Adventureland, her face a mixture of exhilaration and horror, as we careened down the famous log ﬂume, holding on for dear life. And of course, there is the framed plate of my 500th column, published on March 11th, 2015, a testament to the longevity I never imagined I or the column - would achieve when I set foot in our old office on May 2nd, 2005. One move and another small renovation later, the layout of my desk and office space may have changed, but the memories have traveled with me, giving rise to many new ones made along the way. In just a few short weeks, the desk will be empty, the personal touches gone for good, relegated to a storage box in the back seat of my car for a time - until a better, more permanent home can be found. Things, as we know, are replaceable. It is the stories behind them which live on forever.

Believe and Achieve Cumberland Farms recently announced that 130 talented high school seniors have been awarded “Believe & Achieve” Scholarships to help them attend college in the fall of 2018. Among the winners is Chaminade High School graduate Daniel Hepworth of Massapequa Park. Hepworth will be attending Duke University. Since the launch of Cumberland Farms’ popular scholarship program over a decade ago, the company has provided more than $1.2 million of critical financial assistance to over 1,200 collegebound young adults to help them realize their dreams of achieving a college education. Robotics Exploration Middle school students got an introduction to the Massapequa School District’s robust robotics program during a four-day camp. Eighteen students entering sixth, seventh and eighth grades took part in the annual program, which was held in the high school’s technology wing and totaled 24 hours of instruction, planning, programming and testing. Participants learned about touch, light and distance sensors, which

help control a robot’s behavior. Students worked in teams and used Lego kits to build their robots. They were then tasked with programming their robots to successfully travel through a maze. “It’s pretty interesting to build your own robot, code it and make it work the way you want it to,” said eighth-grader Sarah Bello, who took part in the summer robotics camp for the third time. Technology teacher

Matthew Swanson said there are numerous opportunities for students to pursue an interest in robotics. At Berner Middle School, a sixth-grade robotics club allows them to learn and explore while a seventh- and eighthgrade club takes part in competitions. There are robotics courses at Massapequa High School along with the Robo Chiefs national championship team.

In recognition of National Overdose Awareness Day, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Louis Imbroto will partner with YES Community Counseling Center to host a Remembrance Ceremony at Phillip Healey Beach, located at 30 Florence Avenue in Massapequa, on August 30th, at 7:30 pm, honoring the loved ones who we have lost to addiction and overdose. Residents are encouraged to bring a framed pictured of their loved one lost to drug addiction. Pictures provided will be returned at the conclusion. Supervisor Saladino stated, “I invite residents to join us on National Overdose Awareness Day to remember those who lost their battle to drug addiction, and together reignite our pledge to do all that we can to keep families whole and stop the scourge of opiate-

related deaths. I thank YES Community Counseling Center for partnering with us to host this important remembrance ceremony.” Councilman Imbroto stated, “I can think of no better way to continue to raise awareness to the deadly opioid epidemic that has been impacting Long Island than by hosting this Remembrance Ceremony to honor those we have lost on National Overdose Awareness Day. Tina Farrell has been appointed as the curriculum associate for English language arts and library media for the Massapequa School District. She is entering her ninth year in the district and served as coordinating chairperson for comprehensive literacy

for the past three years. In her previous position, she supervised the reading department from kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as the elementary literacy coaches. She has also served as a reading specialist at Unqua and Birch Lane elementary

schools and an elementary literacy coach. Before coming to Massapequa, Ms. Farrell was a literacy coach in Valley Stream District 30. As curriculum associate, she will oversee the K-12 English curriculum and the library media department, supervise secondary English teachers and conduct observations. Ms. Farrell holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood and elementary education from Queens College, a master’s degree in reading from St. John’s University and an advanced graduate certificate in educational leadership from Stony Brook University. She is a member of the International Literacy Association and the Associate for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

TrueCare, Inc. recently celebrated its 1st Anniversary as a part of the Massapequa community. Owner/Director Carol Bottiglieri is planning an Open House Celebration, to be announced soon. TrueCare is a senior daycare facility located in Massapequa. They serve the needs of the elderly, especially those with dementia and Alzheimers. The staff is professional, experienced and compassionate. Carol Bottiglieri is the founder, owner and onsite director of daily activities. She is a long-time resident of Massapequa and parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church. After many years serving as a director of human resources, Carol became a caregiver for her own family members. Her love of the elderly

led her to work for Senior Helpers in Garden City. Eventually, Carol realized that there is a great need for quality eldercare and started partnering with families to care for their senior relatives. After nine years of caring oneon-one, Carol realized that more needed to be done to socialize the elderly. This led to the founding of TrueCare. The philosophy at TrueCare is that seniors with dementia and Alzheimers do better in an environment that includes peer-to-peer socialization, structured activities, exercise and healthy meals. They also realize the need for caregivers to have time away in order to take care of their own needs. TrueCare provides daily activities including crafts, games, exercise classes and events such as dog and

kitten therapy, chair yoga, hairstylist/barber, manicurist, sing-a-longs, magician, vintage cars, etc. They also offer caregiver support groups and Alzheimer’s workshops for spouses and children. Lifelong Oceanside resident and veteran Oceanside Fire Department volunteer Steven E. Klein was sworn in yesterday as President of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) at the association’s 146th annual convention in Syracuse, NY. In his new role, Klein will lead the statewide organization, responsible for supporting and advocating for the 105,000 men and women who make up New York State’s volunteer fire service. “After more than 50 years in the fire service, it is an incredible honor to be elected President of FASNY,” said Klein. “In my new role, I will continue to stand with and lead the State’s volunteer fire service, and one of my primary objectives will be to increase the number of volunteer firefighters across New York. One way to do this is through the training and recruitment of our young citizens and promotion of youth fire programs across the State. I would like to see additional attention and funding spent on recruitment, youth groups and junior firefighter

training programs to secure the safety and wellness of the residents of New York for generations to come.” Klein’s focus on youth training and programs hits close to home. His joining the volunteer fire service started a family legacy that now runs three generations deep. Klein’s son Kevin is currently serving his second stint as Chief of the Oceanside Fire Department, and his grandson Christopher is a new, probationary member of the Department. Klein first joined the Oceanside Fire Department in 1965, quickly becoming deeply involved in all aspects of the organization. He has since served in a wide variety of administrative and line officer positions, including a term as Chief of Department in 1984. Shortly after joining Oceanside Fire Department, Klein began dedicating much of his time to advocating for and supporting volunteer firefighters, both at the regional and the State level. He is a past president of the Fire Chiefs’ Council of Nassau County and the

Nassau County Firemen’s Association. He has served on the Nassau County Fire Commission and is a past chairman of the 2nd Battalion Fire District. Klein joined FASNY in the late 1960’s and was appointed to the Fire Prevention (now the Fire Prevention and Life Safety) Committee. In 2002, Steve was elected Trustee of the Firemen’s Home, and was reelected in 2007, serving until 2012. His time on the Board of Trustees included seven years as Secretary. Klein has also been a director of the FASNY Foundation since 2003 and has served as president of the Foundation board. In 2014, Klein was elected to the FASNY leadership, assuming the role of 2nd Vice President. Two years later, in 2016, he was elected 1st Vice President. Klein is retired from the United States Postal Service. He is a graduate of Oceanside Senior High School and SUNY Farmingdale and still resides on Long Island with his family. He has two children and three grandchildren.
