At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. 11th Annual Over 50 Fair Will Be A Virtual Charity Conference

The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s
event can be enjoyed by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day. 10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning
without chemicals. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each year. She said that the Over 50 Fair is always “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+,” although this year is a bit scaled down due to being virtual. The exciting weekend-
long 2020 Over 50 Fair will be a fundraiser for The INN, a local non-profit that helps provide assistance to the hungry, needy, and homeless right here on Long Island. After the 2019 event, Cynthia Sucich of The INN shared “The Over 50 Fair is an AMAZING event that focuses on the various needs of those who are... Over 50! The INN is so
honored to have been the chosen charity of the event for 8 years. TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below and is about an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.
They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT - Senior Class President Alex Lawless addressed his fellow graduates. Photo courtesy of the Massapequa School District on the past few months in anger, he said, but instead look forward with hope and promise as well as the knowledge that they can overcome huge challenges. In a passionate speech, general organization President Alex Carmenaty, known as the “Voice of the Chiefs” for calling many of Massapequa’s athletic contests, said he has been blessed to have grown up and gone to school in a wonderful, supportive town. Speaking to a crowd sitting in cars, he asked everyone to “give themselves a horn.” Alex invoked a message of humanity, calling on his fellow graduates to always choose love, help others in need, be problem solvers and serve their community. “Be an answer to somebody’s prayers,” he said. Senior Class President Alex Lawless spoke about how people are often defined by numbers – grades, salaries, sports statistics – but numbers often don’t accurately define a person. He told his fellow graduates never to work for numbers, and never let numbers stop their aspirations. When faced with one-in-a-million odds, he said, “Don’t be afraid to be that one.” Valedictorian Talia Cartafalsa and salutatorian Alexa Mangione’s speeches were pre-recorded and played on the large screens. Alexa said that the pandemic has taught
her more about perfection – how hard it is to achieve – and gratitude. She said while this chapter in her life ended in a less than perfect way, she is grateful for the time she had a Massapequa High School and all that she experienced. Talia noted that the driveup ceremony at the beach represented a monumental shift in their lives brought on by the pandemic, but graduation still held the same meaning – that they have all achieved successes worthy of celebration. She added that Massapequa High School’s large class is filled with students who have a diverse range of interests and talents, and whose curiosity has them poised to make positive changes in the world. Mr. Conboy recognized students who will be entering the military, and new high school Principal Barbara Lowell announced the medallion winners in each subject area. Wearing their blue “MHS Class of 2020” masks, graduates came up to the side of the stage in groups. They were announced one by one and allowed to remove their masks for photos as they crossed the stage and picked up a diploma folder from the table. Each student exchanged an elbow bump with Mr. Conboy, the pandemic alternative to the handshake.
How to motivate visitors to maintain social distancing upon entering the Museum of American Armor? The Armor Museum has enlisted the Army. The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, has teamed up with Dr. Erik Villard, Digital Military Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, to present his innovative reinvention of motivational posters first created by the War Department during World War II. From G.I.s prepared to throw hand sanitizers (as opposed to hand grenades), to a masked Uncle Sam leading a charge against COVID, the posters will be situated throughout the museum, adjacent to its tanks, artillery pieces, and uniformed mannequins. Dr. Villard explained, “I already have a massive collection of these posters. I just looked through them and thought, ‘Okay, which ones could be modified, so that they keep something of the original spirit, but would be applicable to the
Covid crisis?’ “Some of the posters are kind of the traditional attack / over the top variety; but then others, like the ‘Knowledge Wins’ poster are more informationbased. Certain images will resonate with some people, and others will prefer a
different approach,” he continued. Museum of American Armor founder and president, Lawrence Kadish, stated, “We are following all the CDC protocols which allowed the museum to open on July 31st, but we wanted to make sure that our visitors’ behavior remained the first line of defense against spreading COVID-19. These imaginative reenvisionings of classic military posters by Dr. Villard are designed to get your attention, focus on COVID precautions, and to do so in a setting that reminds you America has gotten through much worse when it pulled together.” The Museum of American Armor has some 40 operational military vehicles under cover within Nassau County’s Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Its re-opening hours are Friday to Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. An admission donation of $15 for adults is requested, $10 for seniors and veterans, and $8 for children.

Massapequa High School’s Class of 2020 waited an extra month for graduation, so a halfhour delay for rain was nothing for a group who has quickly learned to overcome adversity. The 65th class to graduate from the school came together at TOBAY Beach on July 22 for a ceremony that was anything but ordinary. An indoor venue wasn’t an option this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so Massapequa partnered with the Town of Oyster Bay to host graduation at the beach. Cars rolled into the parking lot that evening and were set up to face the stage. Large screens on either side showed live feed of the ceremony, and graduates and their families could tune to a local radio station for the audio. While lightning flashed in the distance, the storms mostly stayed away with only a brief rain shower delaying the ceremony’s start. Brian Conboy, interim principal for the past two years, said that being together was the prevailing sentiment among seniors when seeking their input for graduation. That meant finding an outdoor venue to safely host 570 students. Mr. Conboy said that although the end of their senior year was unusual, he reminded them to reflect on all of their 13 years of school that led to this milestone moment. Don’t look back
