Massapequa High School seniors traded their blue caps and gowns for navy blue and gold Chief Nation shirts for a car parade through town on June 22. With that evening’s scheduled graduation ceremony postponed to August due to the COVID-19 pandemic, seniors were still able to make memories on their special day. It was at Berner Middle School – where the Class of 2020 first came together six years ago from a halfdozen elementary schools – that they reunited after three months of home instruction. Hours before the parade was set to begin, cars began lining up in the middle school’s

expansive parking lot, providing ample space for a graduating class approaching 580 students. There were fewer cars than that, with many friends riding together. Other seniors were driven by a parent so they could soak in the moment. Before the parade began, students put the finishing touches on their car decorations, from balloons and streamers to photos and flags. They wrote celebratory messages on their windows and draped banners over their hoods. A Massapequa fire truck led the parade down Carman Mill Road to Merrick Road, where it continued in the right lane to the high school.

Cars then turned into the west parking lot and passed under a blue-andgold balloon arch. After the parade, seniors were invited to pick up their personalized lawn signs from the front of the school. “The parade meant the world to all of the seniors,” said student government President Alex Carmenaty. “We have been through a lot, and we have overcome a lot, too. The love we were shown was something that we will never forget, as we’ll have that in our memories for the rest of our lives. Massapequa has blessed us with a community that always provides for its people, especially us seniors this year.”

Year-round reading is important, and the staff at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District is doing its part to make sure students stay connected to literature throughout the summer. East Lake launched its first digital library featuring teachers reading their favorite children’s books aloud. Principal Thomas McKillop and Assistant Principal Mary Velte also selected books to share. The digital library is designed to resemble an actual library, as students can look through bookshelves on two

pages, with nearly 50 books to choose from. Once they click on a book cover, it takes them to the video. Teachers from all grade levels and subject areas participated, recording the videos from their homes, many reading aloud with their own children. Students could also choose from a master list which listed each book as well as the author, genre and theme. East Lake school psychologist Laura Hess and technology learning coach Alison Morgan collaborated to bring the idea to life. The link to the digital library

was shared with students and families in an email on the last day of school. Mr. McKillop said it was exciting for children to see teachers they have had throughout their whole time at East Lake. “Our idea for students to have access to a digital library over the summer was a hope that was made possible with the help of Ms. Hess, Ms. Morgan and more than 40 faculty members, who all understand the importance of continuous reading,” Mr. McKillop said. “We hope to build on this in the years to come.”

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are: career options by salary, understanding

money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. Catholic Health Services Offers Tips to Reduce COVID-19 Anxiety As coronavirus continues to impact Long Islanders, growing health concerns along with the constant barrage of news is raising people’s anxiety. Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) mental health professionals offer ways we can reduce our stress during this time of uncertainty. This includes eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, virtually connecting with friends and family and reducing exposure to news and social media. “The constant flow of information related to coronavirus can become overwhelming,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavioral Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “It’s important to take a break and step away from media reports and the constant scrolling through social channels.” Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations. However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into

an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions. Knowing the body’s physical reactions to the different types of anxiety is important. Typical stress reactions can include temporary difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, stomachache and difficulty sleeping. Atypical reactions can manifest in persistent and/or excessive worry that prevents you from completing daily tasks, changes to energy levels, eating patterns and/or prolonged and overwhelming worry. Dr. Brenner strongly suggests that anyone experiencing unusual or atypical reactions that won’t subside in a short period of time seek professional mental health assistance. To reduce coronavirus-related anxiety, there are several steps individuals can take. These include: • Find meaningful tasks and roles within your support network to channel your anxiety • Create spaces that are not focused on coronavirus. This could include a social

media thread on other topics, or watching movies • Savor small positive moments, amplify positive stories and stay optimistic • Practice mindfulness when managing anxiety such as performing exercises and deep breathing. For those who wish to speak to a mental health professional, CHS offers a host of services including Telepsychiatry, which improves access to psychiatric services for emergency department (ED) patients, particularly after normal office hours. The service is currently offered in the EDs of Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. More information on CHS’s mental health services may be obtained by calling 1(855) CHS-4500.
