Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. There are many ways that you can become involved with RTLI, whether that be individually or as a company! Corporate sponsors are a huge help to the organization and it can benefit your company greatly as well. Corporate sponsors are companies that make the decision to fund a RTLI project for someone in need. Their employees will be able to participate in hands on work with the project they sponsor so their company can

have the chance to take part in a team building and community leadership opportunity. When they become a corporate sponsor, companies will get to see immediate positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled individual or a family in need, while demonstrating their company’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life right here on Long Island. These sponsors will also get acknowledged on the RTLI website, in their quarterly newsletter and on social media. Additionally, if you are a business professional and are interested in getting involved with Rebuilding Together Long Island, the opportunity is available. RTLI is now interviewing business professionals to become an integral part of their Advisory Board and help advance their mission, whether it be through financial contributions, in-kind donations, networking capabilities or another way. Lastly, this organization is looking for people to fill the following volunteer positions: Crew Members, Electricians, Plumbers and Home Visitors. Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Following The Path To Fitness

Run, walk, spin and hop are all actions encouraged in the new movement pathway at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. It was created in partnership with the PTA as a way of encouraging exercise and building strength. The movement pathway is located behind the school, adjacent to the playground, and gives students another activity during recess. It begins with a hopscotch board and has several twists and turns before reaching the end. Students can follow

straight, curved and zig zag lines, hop five times each on their right and left feet, and do jumping jacks. At one point they crab walk, using both their arms and legs to scoot across the ground and building upper body strength in the process. PTA members Cindi St. George and Sue Perakakis spearheaded the project, and they were joined by numerous parent volunteers to paint the movement pathway in early June. The idea was to create a unique space for Unqua students that incorporated exercise

and movement without requiring any balls or supplies. Physical education teacher Melissa Osborne said it is a great addition to the playground area and can help students improve their agility and balance. It is an activity that can be done independently or with a group of friends. While it is great for all ages, Ms. Osborne said she plans to use the movement pathway next year in physical education classes with her younger students to help them develop their motor skills.

French Learners Are Up To Par Nearly 40 students in French language classes in the Massapequa School District earned recognition for their performance on the National French exam, Le Grand Concours. It was sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Several students from Berner Middle School were medal winners for their high achievement. Earning silver recognition were Rosalie Avalos, Madelyn Breves, Fiona Hayes and Sofia Villegas, with Theresa Mannino, Jenna Muscatello and Kaitlyn Stella receiving bronze medals. Honorable mention awards went to

Kathleen Arfaoui, Ava Bendowski, Ava Geaniotis, Regan Healy, Ella Henry, Joshua Holden, Catherine O’Connell and Brady Sanders. At Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, ninth grader Lindsey Black earned a bronze medal. From the high school’s main campus, Talia Catafalsa and Adriana Kamor received gold medals. Silver medal recipients were Jack Devenish and Juliette Liebov, and bronze medal awards went to Sarah Benedict, Kaela Brunner, Ashley DiStefano, Olivia Hinck, Alexander Lauless and Claire Russell.

Honorable mention achievement was earned by Lucas Alonso, Bridgette Balian, Courtney Conaty, Isabella Fontana, Kayla Hassett, Abigail Meier, Isabella Mininni, Samantha Otranto, Ava Pappalardo, Joshua Pastecchi, Madeline Stanton and Emma Young. Students from the three schools participated in the 84th annual National French Contest and were evaluated for their written, oral and listening comprehension skills in French. Teachers with recognized students included Evelyne Le Goupil, Gheisha Rodriguez, Sally Solem and Traci Tucker.

Art Competition Winner Assemblyman Mike LiPetri (R-Massapequa) recognized and congratulated the winner of his Inaugural Art Competition that asked students to create a piece of artwork portraying New York State history or government. The winner, Olivia Cristadoro, of Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, recreated one of the 20th Century’s most famous photos of a Navy sailor kissing a

stranger on V-J Day in Times Square, New York City. “Congratulations to Olivia Cristadoro of Massapequa High School - Ames Campus, the winner of my Inaugural Art Competition,” LiPetri said. “Olivia’s work, a portrait inspired by Alfred Eisenstaedt’s photograph “V-J Day in Times Square,” is an iconic image of the last century and certainly exemplifies New York State

history, especially as we come off the heels of D-Day last month and recently celebrated Independence Day. “Thank you to all the supportive teachers and family members who work to sustain the arts in our schools and our community. My office and I are so impressed by Olivia’s work and we wish her the best of luck in all of her future endeavors. Great job Olivia!”
