The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Their President Stella Hendrickson relates calling their organization for help to calling a neighbor. She mentioned, “Calling Rebuilding Together Long Island for help is like calling that person in your neighborhood that we all wish we had. You know the one...the one who is always working around his house and yard and seems to know how to take care of all the many little things that need to be taken care before they turn into major issues. That’s who the volunteers of RTLI are. They are your neighbors, retired from all walks of life and looking to help others and the communities of Long Island be safer and better. Some were teachers and principals, some engineers, some were IT professionals. They are a mixture of professions, but they all have one common goal, which is to help those in need.”

Do you need grab bars to help eliminate nasty falls and a dreaded costly hospitalization? No problem, they’ll take care of it. Do you need a wheelchair ramp so that you can leave your home safely? RTLI can

construct a wooden ramp usually within a day or two of the start of the project. Are you freezing in the winter because of cold drafts from the windows? They’ll weatherize your windows and doors to keep you warm. If you have trip hazards like missing floor tiles or a high saddle between doorways, that’s an easy fix for the RTLI volunteers. These are just a few of things that RTLI does every day for eligible homeowners across our beautiful island! If you are in need and want to know if you quality for assistance, please call them at 631.777.7894. You may be wondering how this organization does all of this for free. Some of their program funds come through grants and corporations, but some also come from everyday people like you and me. RTLI does not receive government funding. They do so much for the community and because they are an organization of volunteers, they can do a lot with a little and make every dollar count. Additionally, they are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills because training is available. (All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.) They are also looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. If you’re an employer you can call them and see how you can sponsor a project and have your staff participate in a day of service. Collection Drive for L.I.’s Homeless Children Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today announced a collection drive to support birthday parties for homeless children on Long Island. Donations will be collected through August 1st and will support the charitable efforts of Birthday Wishes

of Long Island, a notfor-profit organization located in Hicksville. Through the efforts of volunteers and donations, the organization provided birthday parties to 1,288 homeless children in 2018, including gifts, homemade cupcakes, goody bags, activities and crafts. “Birthday Wishes of

Long Island is a wonderful organization comprised of giving and caring volunteers who help bring smiles to the face of homeless children on Long Island – some of whom have never received a birthday party before,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Help bring normalcy, hope and joy to a homeless girl or

Dominican Village Earns AHCA/NCAL Silver National Quality Award

PATRIOT AWARDS HONOREES - The 17th annual Patriot Award dinner was held on Monday, July 1st at the Crest Hollow Country Club. The Seaford 9/11 Committee presented honorary Patriot Awards to Phil & Sue Nicola, Jim O’Hara, and Joe Viscio for their service to the community. The five graduating Seaford H.S. seniors were presented with Patriot Awards and a monetary scholarship. These students were selected for their service, character, and commitment. Dominican Village is delighted to announce they earned the American Health Care Association/ National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) Silver - Achievement in Quality Award. The award is the second of three distinctions possible through the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program, which recognizes providers across the nation that have demonstrated their commitment to improving quality of care in long term and postacute care. There were 183 Silver recipients in the country and only two Silver recipients in New York State. Dominican Village was the only Assisted Living in NYS to receive the Silver National Quality Award the other member was a nursing home.

“It’s amazing to see so many member centers and communities receiving this award,” said Mark Parkinson, President and CEO of AHCA/NCAL. “Despite all the challenges we face as a profession, I continue to be astonished by the quality outcomes our members achieve.
