Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit.

Moving-up ceremonies in the Massapequa School District took on a new look this year with large gatherings limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fifth graders were recognized at driveup celebrations on June 15 which didn’t lack in excitement or fanfare. The ceremonies, typically held in the district’s three auditoriums, instead were outside of each elementary school, allowing students to pay one last visit to the places where so many memories were made over the last six years. The warm, sunny day was

indicative of the start of summer vacation. Elaborately decorated cars entered under arches of blue and gold balloons. Fifth grade teachers announced the names of their students as cars approached the podium. Principals handed out packets that included moving-up certificates and awards, and many children presented gifts to their teachers. Each ceremony was a schoolwide event with teachers and staff lining the front driveway holding signs, waving and shouting good luck wishes to the

future middle school students. At McKenna Elementary School, teachers displayed large yellow banners that read “Aim High,” “We ♥ You” and “Good Luck @ Berner,” and at East Lake Elementary School, “Congratulations to the Future Class of 2027” was scrawled in the driveway, referencing their graduation from Massapequa High School in the latter half of the decade. “Today, you are going to be the first graduate of the Massapequa High School Class of 2020,” Principal Brian Conboy told Allen John Pilate III in the auditorium lobby on July 2, in front of a small gathering of family members and staff. The senior, better known as A.J., will be attending the United States Military Academy Preparatory School at West Point. Because he has to be there before Massapequa’s graduation ceremony on July 22, he was given an opportunity to put on his blue gap and gown

and receive his diploma. The socially distanced ceremony was attended by family members, teachers, guidance staff, coaches and administrators including new high school Principal Barbara Lowell. Mr. Conboy, who served as interim principal for the past two years, opened the short program by playing pomp and circumstance on his phone, then spoke about A.J.’s achievements at Massapequa High School. A.J. was an AllCounty lacrosse player and was on the 2019 state championship team. He also played football and

wrestled, was a member of the National Honor Society and Peer AIDS Educators Club, and took several Advanced Placement and college-level courses. A.J., who attended Fairfield Elementary School as a child, said he wanted to go to West Point Prep because it offered him an opportunity to pursue all of his passions – serve his country, get a good education and play lacrosse. He wants to study mechanical engineering and eventually become an engineer in the Army’s special forces.

The American Academy of Family Physicians notes that children should get at least one hour of physical activity per day. The AAFP notes that many kids easily achieve that marker simply by being children and engaging in the activities kids are drawn to each day, such as running, climbing and playing games like tag with other youngsters. The Canadian Paediatric Society notes that exercise needs change as children advance through various stages in life, and that means activities should change along with them. For example, the CPS recommends that physical

activities for toddlers should be fun and encourage children to explore and try new things. Unstructured physical activity or free play can benefit toddlers. As toddlers become preschoolers, physical activities can become more structured, though the CPS notes that children this age may not understand the rules of organized sports nor are they necessarily coordinated enough to participate in them. However, structured activities like games of tag and throwing and catching may be appropriate for some preschoolers. As children enter kindergarten and

advance through elementary school, physical activities can be moderate to vigorous in intensity. Organized sports can become part of the fitness regimen at this time, though the CPS recommends short instruction times, ﬂexible rules, free time in practices, and a focus on fun rather than competition. Parents who want to learn about age-appropriate physical activities can encourage their children to embrace fitness and are urged to speak with their children’s physicians.

We installed our new Executive Board and Board of Directors on June 25, 2020 at Klestinec Park with social distancing and other safety measures, like masks, in place so that all were safe. My thanks to Town Supervisor Joe Saladino and NYS Assemblyman John Mikulin for installing our team as needed. We then proceeded to American Beauty Bistro for the outdoor Luncheon and we had a great time. I was able to give padfolios to all of the Board Members to use, and I also announced all of my appointments at that time. One of the appointments was our new Legal Counsel Mr. Michael Venditto, who will do a great job for us, and he will also chair the Government Affairs Committee as well. My thanks to Michael and all of the Committee Chairs for agreeing to serve during my administration. Thanks also to Past Legal Counsel Joanne Hawthorne for her work, and we wish her well in the future.

Special thanks to Past Chamber President Gary Slavin for filing all of the needed paperwork for the PPP Program and other grants, as we are now receiving those funds and using them to our benefit as a Chamber. Revenue and resources are now important. As a reminder, if you as a business have not paid your dues yet, please remit to the office as we are trying to keep all members on the rolls for our benefit. We appreciate all of the members’ cooperation with this, if able to do so.
