Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board will host the 7th Annual “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Lacrosse Benefit Game at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. This year’s roundthe-clock event begins on the morning of July 22nd at 9am and continues non-stop for 24 hours until July 23rd at 9am. The event

benefits veterans and active duty military personnel. The Long Island Air Force Association will conduct a special ceremony on July 22nd at 5:00 pm to honor Vietnam veterans and present them with medals that commemorate their service in the conflict. Adding to the spectacle, will be a parachute landing on the field conducted by the “All Veterans Group,” which will deliver the official ball.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Shootout for Soldiers is a terrific game that provides local lacrosse players a chance to enjoy a sport they love in a unique way while also raising charitable funds to support the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Whether you enjoy lacrosse or are just looking for a fun-family event, I invite residents to be a part of the festivities.”

The charitable funds raised at Shootout for Soldiers will benefit the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Long Island Air Force Association, Team Red White and Blue and the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund. The event features 24 continuous 1-hour sessions. The score is cumulative, resulting in unique scores for a lacrosse game with totals reaching into the hundreds.

Participants include children, adults, seniors, youth, high school, college players and veterans. Teams that accommodate players with special needs are also scheduled to play. “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Charitable Lacrosse Game

plantings at the Sanctuary provide habitat and food for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife and attract an array of fruit, nectar, seed, and insect eating birds throughout the year. The Sanctuary will also provide a critically needed refuge for songbirds that migrate annually along the Atlantic flyway. DPW also ensured that it will continue the function of reducing flooding in roadways and channeling precipitation into the groundwater aquifers. The sanctuary is located adjacent from Plainedge High School in North Massapequa. This location was chosen for its native trees and flowers, and its manageable amount of invasive vegetation. The project sanctuary also acts to educate the public near our bird sanctuary about the purpose of storm drains with educational signage. The Sanctuary was named in honor of the late Michael Sperling, champion of open space and advocate for the natural resources of Long Island. Michael Sperling was a member of the South Shore Audubon Society for over 30 years-- serving two terms as President,

He also served on the Board of the New York State Audubon Council and as Vice President of the Friends of Massapequa Preserve. “With 1/3 of our birds lost since 1970, and 2/3 at risk of extinction from climate change and habitat destruction, every bit of habitat we can create will help sustain their populations. We hope our Sanctuary will serve as a model and educational resource for others to use Nassau’s Adopt-a-Sump program or to plant native plants on their properties to create a healthy environment for birds and other pollinators.” said President Brien Weiner. “We are so pleased to be a part of the transition of sumps into Sanctuaries. It truly symbolizes thinking globally and acting locally. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran recently toured the newly completed Michael Sperling Memorial Bird Sanctuary in Massapequa. The Nassau County Department of Public Works (DPW) worked with the South Shore Audubon Society to convert what was a stormwater basin into a living tribute of native plants and wildlife to commemorate Michael Sperling’s many years of commitment as an environmental leader. “Nassau’s Adopt-aSump program allows us to work with wonderful organizations like the South Shore Audubon Society to transform land into sanctuaries for our wildlife that protect Nassau’s natural habitat. Not only will this new preserve attract birds and other animals, it will serve as a fitting tribute to community leader Michael Sperling,” said County Executive Laura Curran. Protect Your Parks: 4 Ways To Keep Facilities Clean Parks have long been popular places to congregate. Facilities vary, but many parks offer various amenities — from walking or biking trails to dog runs to fitness areas. And while thousands of individuals and families visit parks each

year, when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020, parks provided an escape for those who were unable to gather at indoor recreational facilities. Even though parks offered safe places to have fun outdoors when other options were limited, the pandemic affected the way the parks were managed due to budget cuts and reduced staff. This, coupled with a surge in visitors that continues today, only underscores the importance of all outdoor enthusiasts doing what they can to keep parks clean. The following are four effective strategies for individuals to keep parks clean. 1. Leave no trace According to National Geographic, Leave No Trace is a set of environmental ethics for interacting with the great outdoors. It follows guidelines for using parks in thoughtful, sustainable ways. In addition to carry in/carry out

policies for belongings and trash, Leave No Trace components involve making an effort not to disturb and plants and animals, hiking in appropriate areas, and using care when camping. More information about the Leave No Trace movement is available at https://lnt.org. 2. Manage pet waste The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in the United States, pet dogs produce more than eight billion pounds of feces each year, which equates to three-quarters of a pound per dog every day. Dog waste can contain bacteria and even cryptosporidium, a parasite that infects humans. Even though animal waste is organic, leaving it alone instead of picking it up can lead to environmental issues, including negative effects on local water supplies. It also smells bad and attracts flies and vermin. It’s important

for park visitors to pick up after their companion animals. 3. Reduce waste It can take roughly 450 years for a plastic water bottle to biodegrade. Even if they finally break down, bottles made from polyethylene terephalate (PET) can leave toxins in the soil and threaten fresh water. Use a reusable bottle instead of a single-use alternative when visiting the park. If plastic bottles must be used, be sure to place them in recycling containers around the park. 4. Volunteer Individuals can volunteer to pick up trash at their local parks. Various conservation groups and organizations organize trash pick-up events each year. Increased usage of parks means the potential for more trash and damage. Everyone can do his or her part to keep parks clean and enjoyable.

A major Public Art Exhibit piece has been restored & spruced up after a decade and a half as a tourist attraction on Freeport’s Nautical MiIe on Long Island. Weathering seventeen years on Woodcleft Canal and surviving Super Storm Sandy in 2012, “Sport of Kings” is back and better than ever. Freeport resident James Caracciolo owns the life sized sculpture of a Quarter Horse who was among the twenty or so artworks by

several artists participating in the Fundraising Auction sponsored by Nassau County and the Sport Entertainment and Tourism Commission at Belmont Racetrack in 2003. The years and hurricanes took their toll on the artwork and James felt he might be able to convince the original artist to consider doing the restoration herself. When asked if she was up to the task in 2020, Debra Ann Kasimakis, Long Island’s own celebrity artist said,

“I’d be honored” and after her stroke of 2019, felt it would be a great way to keep in the loop during the year of the Pandemic. There is talk on the Grapevine of a coming out party for the horse and this Summer is the perfect time to make the unveiling a step in a positive direction for Long Island tourism. “Sport of Kings” is back and so is Long Island’s Summer Season. currently serves as a case manager in the Department of Medicine’s Division of Infectious Diseases at Northwell. Constance is majoring in healthcare administration. She aspires to advance her career in nursing management, and she aims to increase her knowledge of integration of new health care delivery systems, restructuring of

work and budgets, and the increased focus on preventative care through her education. Constance earned her B.S. in Technology and Society from Farmingdale State College, before going on to obtain her nursing degree from Molloy College.
