service dogs and the work the organization does to provide dogs for veterans and first responders at no cost. All of the service dogs that Paws of War trains are rescues. High school coordinator volunteer Jodie Cohen represented Ruff House Rescue, along with a pair of dogs up for adoption. Students from the Dog Rescue Club volunteered at numerous Ruff House Rescue adoption events this year. This is the Dog Rescue Club’s second year at Massapequa High School. It was founded by students to raise awareness about pet adoption and to support local organization that fulfill this mission. In addition to the recent donations, the group has held dog blanket, milk bone and toy drives this year. “It’s really good to give to a cause that not a lot of people know about and I hope more people become aware,” Dog Rescue Club President Erica Hensler said. “Rescuing dogs, rather than shopping, is much better.”

The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community. One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. You’ve made it possible for me to have some peace of mind so I can still be able to stay in my home, the only “roots” I know.”

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! for $6000.00 to the GUIDE DOG FOUNDATION for the sponsorship of a guide dog. Presentation was made at their Friday night bingo

held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. This was the 15th dog sponsored by Our Lady of the Island Council 6911, Knights of Columbus.

French Learners Are Up To Par Nearly 40 students in French language classes in the Massapequa School District earned recognition for their performance on the National French exam, Le Grand Concours. It was sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Several students from Berner Middle School were medal winners for their high achievement. Earning silver recognition were Rosalie Avalos, Madelyn Breves, Fiona Hayes and Sofia Villegas, with Theresa Mannino, Jenna Muscatello and Kaitlyn Stella receiving bronze medals. Honorable mention awards went to

Kathleen Arfaoui, Ava Bendowski, Ava Geaniotis, Regan Healy, Ella Henry, Joshua Holden, Catherine O’Connell and Brady Sanders. At Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, ninth grader Lindsey Black earned a bronze medal. From the high school’s main campus, Talia Catafalsa and Adriana Kamor received gold medals. Silver medal recipients were Jack Devenish and Juliette Liebov, and bronze medal awards went to Sarah Benedict, Kaela Brunner, Ashley DiStefano, Olivia Hinck, Alexander Lauless and Claire Russell.

Honorable mention achievement was earned by Lucas Alonso, Bridgette Balian, Courtney Conaty, Isabella Fontana, Kayla Hassett, Abigail Meier, Isabella Mininni, Samantha Otranto, Ava Pappalardo, Joshua Pastecchi, Madeline Stanton and Emma Young. Students from the three schools participated in the 84th annual National French Contest and were evaluated for their written, oral and listening comprehension skills in French.
