RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY - On June 23, 2021, the Adventureland family celebrated the Grand Reopening of Adventureland with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Adventureland opened in 1962 and has been serving Long Island for over 59 years. The park offers both season and day passes that can be purchased online or at the park. Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonprofit organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others. The importance of community should never be overlooked, and Blue Umbrella Experience definitely understands that! The classes that this nonprofit offer either take place at their new location, which is 150 Motor Parkway, Suite 11, Hauppauge, NY 11788 or online! Some classes they offer are: Yoga, Martial Arts, Acting and Improv, Music Appreciation, Art, Digital Design and Technology, World Cultures, History of Walt Disney, Languages and Humanities, Personal Development, Finances and Math for everyday use, Communications, Animals & Nature and Cooking for all abilities and all levels. “We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonprofit Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive

Transition Program and first and foremost, a love of supporting positive growth in their students; and so, through our Above and Beyond Community Class initiative, BUE’s community has grown to an incredible group of over 80 individuals from all over and ranging in age from 14 into their thirties.” Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning. To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other. Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. Free Senior Citizen Summer Programs

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens summer activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers and parks throughout the Town. Book Club, music, bingo, aquatic classes, and tai chi are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program, which runs through September 3rd. “I invite our senior residents to participate in these free activities, where they can enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active and engaged during the dog days of summer,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our senior summer activities are some of the most popular programs the Town offers, and I expect this year to be no different with the expansive and diverse activities that will be offered!” The following programs

Hazardous Material & Homeowners Cleanup Days Scheduled for July & August Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced the Town’s S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) and Homeowners Cleanup Days this summer, at the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex. Residents can drop off materials at 101 Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road in Old Bethpage, on the following dates and times: S.T.O.P. Program – 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 10th Saturday, August 7th

Saturday, August 14th “The summer months often bring with them opportunities for homeowners to clean out their homes and yards,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Residents can bring both hazardous and non-hazardous materials to various programs we offer in the Town, helping to protect our environment and make cleanups more convenient.”

The Town’s S.T.O.P. program accepts various hazardous materials, such as gasoline, Homeowners Cleanup & most pesticides, paint Paper Shredding – and batteries. The 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Homeowners Cleanup Saturday, July 17th program accepts non-

hazardous waste, including used tires, fence posts, clean broken concrete or yard waste. Paper shredding services (up to four boxes) are also available during the Homeowners Cleanup to residents only, no businesses. The Town’s S.T.O.P. and Homeowners programs are open to residents within the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal District. Proof of residency is required. Musician Is Cellist And Composer Students in the Massapequa High School orchestra regularly play music by famous composers, but it’s rare for them to perform a piece written by one of their peers. That was the case this year, as they learned a composition by senior Adriana Kamor, who started writing original music in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Adriana said that composing was her way of staying connected to music when schools closed down in March 2020. She used a program called Note Flight, which was recommended by her teacher, Marjorie Spagnuolo, to create new arrangements of pop songs she likes. Soon after, Adriana began crafting original pieces. She has three compositions in the process of being copyrighted. “Chaos and Calamity” is a full orchestral piece, “Last Attacker” is a cello duet

and “Sunrise After Sunset” is for a quartet. All three pieces, she said, reflect her emotions going through pandemic, and each have a different tempo and tone. The high school orchestra began learning “Chaos and Calamity” in December. After several rehearsals, the roughly 90-student ensemble performed it in the auditorium for a professional recording, with Adriana conducting. The orchestra played it again at the senior awards ceremony. Adriana said that creating music on computer software produces a digitized version of the song, so the first time she heard her classmates play the 2 minute, 10 second song live was an amazing experience and really brought her creation to life. “I was really excited to have a full orchestra,” she said. “It felt surreal. I was really ecstatic that everyone was into the piece and put

in their full effort.” Adriana, who plays the cello, got her start in fourth grade at Unqua Elementary School. She said she decided to join the orchestra because she felt drawn to string instruments and the wide range of sounds that they produce. Adriana credits her elementary orchestra teacher, Alison Pearl, with guiding her to the cello. Since then, she has learned under the tutelage of Katherine Cahalan, Jeremy Einhart and Ms. Spagnuolo, and is grateful for the opportunities she has had to grow as a musician in Massapequa. Outside of school, Adriana has played with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. In college, she will study computer science at Case Western Reserve University, but still wants to find a way to keep music in her life because that is her creative outlet.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently recognized the members of the Town’s COVID-19 Response Team as ‘Employees of the Month’ for the month of June. The Supervisor noted that the crew’s selfless commitment to the employees and residents of the Town of Oyster Bay has resulted in a distinguished record of excellence over the past year, during some very difficult times. These dedicated individuals

were tasked with creating a system for contact tracing, setting up testing procedures, facilitating the administration of vaccines and establishing protocols for each and every employee in the Town. Almost six years later, they are officially alumni of a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. One of the talents of valedictorian and senior class President Jack Devenish is music, so he compared the journey through high school to starting up a worldfamous music group with friends. Freshman year was getting together to play in someone’s basement, while senior year was finally finishing up that album. Any like any music career, there were some bumps along the way. “No matter what,” he told his fellow graduates, “there will always be an audience and a fanbase. There’s a whole world ready to support you in your dream, no matter how big or small. All you have to do is chase it.” Salutatorian Devin DiMascio reflected on the lessons learned during the pandemic. At the top of the list, she said, are selflessness and empathy. “The pandemic taught a very clear lesson about this,” she said. “At its worst points, we took measures to not only prevent ourselves

from getting sick but to keep others safe as well, whether it be a close family member or a stranger at the grocery store. I hope that this value will stick with our generation as we grow older. They survived a year with so many twists and turns and so many ups and downs, Massapequa High School Principal Barbara Lowell said of this year’s graduating class during an outdoor ceremony at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium on June 21. Ms. Lowell, herself a Massapequa alumna, praised the 546 members of the Class of 2021 for their courage and perseverance. “Our seniors did not let it stop them,” she said of the disruptions caused by the global pandemic. “They were able to complete their 13 years in Massapequa Public Schools with grace and success.” The venue allowed for an in-person ceremony, with guests spread out throughout the large seating areas which lined three sides of the field. Graduates sat socially distanced but without masks so the smiles were visible. Ms. Lowell noted that she first met this highly talented group of students several years ago, when they were seventh graders and she was an administrator at Berner Middle School.

Students Seek End To Gun Violence Continued From 3 with proposing solutions to decrease incidents of gun violence. Since the contest was held virtually this year, they submitted a video with their ideas. Ms. Bruno said about 30 schools took part in the event. Students proposed an advertisement awareness campaign for social media, similar to ones that warn about the dangers of smoking and vaping. They also analyzed current

gun laws to see if any improvements could be made and recommended the creation of urgent care centers specifically focused on mental health. All of the ideas had to be approached from a health perspective and demonstrate why these proposed solutions could help solve the problem. National Gun Violence Awareness Day is observed during the first week of June, and Ames students and staff were encouraged

to show their support by wearing orange to school on June 4.

Residents Invited to Bring Chairs, Coolers to Free ‘Music Under the Stars’ Summer Concert Series at TOBAY Beach Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that residents are reminded to bring chairs and coolers to the Summer Concert Series at TOBAY Beach. In accordance with new CDC guidelines, the concerts will no longer be held in a drive-in fashion

and residents can set up seating areas in the lot at TOBAY. The ‘Movies by Moonlight’ series, held at local parks on Wednesdays this summer, will also be hosted in a traditional manner, inviting residents and families to bring chairs, blankets and coolers to enjoy the show.

The 2021 summer concert and movie series will feature a wide variety of genres ranging from country to rock, providing free family fun for all music lovers, as well as family-friendly movie selections. Admission is open to Town residents beginning at 7 p.m. on a firstcome, first-served basis, and residency
