The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that many parents are unaware that common sparklers can burn at temperatures between 1,200 and 2,000 F or more depending on the fuel and oxidizer used. That is hot enough to melt some metals and can cause third-degree burns. Despite this, sparklers are commonly handed out to children at celebrations without anyone advising on proper safety use. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says sparklers cause 27 percent of all fireworksrelated injuries. Parents may want to look for safer options for kids, like noisemakers used during New Year’s celebrations. Confetti, water guns and balloons also can be relatively safe ways for children to participate in July 4th fun.

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.
PPE Equipment Fundraiser: EFF collaborated with several Allstate Insurance offices to raise funds for PPE equipment. Over 2,000 masks were delivered to various hospitals, senior centers, nursing homes and fire districts.
Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. In March of 2020, when the pandemic really started to hit hard, Rhonda, along with the assistance of her board members, united to find solutions for the community despite what was going on. Rhonda believed that even though EFF programs may be on hold, that did not mean the people of the community did not still need answers and help. She has worked endless hours for the sake of the families that need assistance and need a voice. Since the pandemic Rhonda has either spearheaded or collaborated in many projects to help our community out. Here is an example of just a few:

The Grab & Go 3,000 Event in Patchogue: Rhonda collaborated with business owner of local restaurant to provide over 3,000 hot meals to families in need. Grab & Go Breakfast in Rocky Point: EFF collaborated with local bagel store owner,
6 Week Marathon: March 29th was the beginning of a 6 week marathon of assisting front line workers with food. EFF and Rhonda did a Go Fund Me with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry to supply St. Charles, Mather and Stony Brook Hospital food every night.
Rhonda was chosen as Model Citizen of the month from local Magazine editor John Dowling for the efforts and work she has been doing in the community. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. As we continue to see re-openings and normalcy, EFF will be searching for volunteers and interns to assist with multiple projects. John Adams, a staunch supporter of American independence and a representative for Boston at the First Continental Congress, felt that, after America gained independence from Great Britain, July 2nd was the correct date on which to celebrate American Independence Day. July 2nd was when the vote for independence took place. July 4, 1776 was when the Declaration of Independence was officially signed. Thereafter, Adams would reportedly decline invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest. In an interesting turn of events, July 4th would prove significant to Adams in another way. Both Adams and Thomas Jefferson, another key figure in American history, died on July 4, 1826, which marked the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

New York American Water Replacing Aging Water Main New York American Water is investing $700,000 to install new water main in Massapequa. The project, which started Monday, June 22, will replace 3,475 feet of aging water main with new 8-inch ductile iron main. The project will also replace 75 utilityowned service lines and four hydrants, and place three additional hydrants. “Our Massapequa customers count on us to deliver reliable, quality water service,” said New York American Water President Lynda DiMenna. “We achieve this by continuing to reinvest in our infrastructure and this
project is an example of that commitment.” This main replacement project will take place along Highwater Ave from South Bay Drive to Fairwater Ave, Greatwater Ave from South Day Drive to Fairwater Ave, and Seagull Place from Fairwater Ave to Highwater Ave. Work is expected to take approximately seven weeks to complete. Final street restoration will be completed as part of a Town of Oyster Bay road and drainage project. Work will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Residents should note that sections
of the street where construction is taking place may be closed to traffic during these working hours. The company asks customers to recognize the essential work being done by its employees and contractors and reminds them to adhere to social distancing rules for everyone’s safety. Raising And Lowering The Flag According to USFlag. org, the American flag should be raised quickly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. While the Flag Code suggests the flag should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset, if it is displayed at night, it should be illuminated. The flag should be saluted as it is hoisted, and when lowered that salute should be held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the final note of music, whichever is the longest. When displayed indoors, the flag should be displayed to the right of the speaker, staging area or sanctuary. Any additional flags hanging in the room should always hang to the left of the American flag. When flags are grouped for display, the American flag should be in the center and at the highest point of any flag.

The American Academy of Family Physicians notes that children should get at least one hour of physical activity per day. The AAFP notes that many kids easily achieve that marker simply by being children and engaging in the activities kids are drawn to each day, such as running, climbing and playing games like tag with other youngsters. The Canadian Paediatric Society notes that exercise needs change as children advance through various stages in life, and that means activities should change along with them. For example, the CPS recommends that physical
activities for toddlers should be fun and encourage children to explore and try new things. Unstructured physical activity or free play can benefit toddlers. As toddlers become preschoolers, physical activities can become more structured, though the CPS notes that children this age may not understand the rules of organized sports nor are they necessarily coordinated enough to participate in them. However, structured activities like games of tag and throwing and catching may be appropriate for some preschoolers. As children enter kindergarten and

Organized sports can become part of the fitness regimen at this time, though the CPS recommends short instruction times, flexible rules, free time in practices, and a focus on fun rather than competition. July 4th Parade To Be Held At Old Paws Of War Desperate For Funds To Help American Soldiers Bring Harley Home Bethpage Village Restoration Nassau County’s 2020 July 4th Parade will take place inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, open to those who pre-purchase one of a limited number of e-tickets online that will reserve a socially distant parking space, enabling families to watch a parade of vintage military vehicles from the collection of the Museum of American Armor. The gates to Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Roads, Old Bethpage, will open to advance ticket holders at 9:30 a.m. on July 4th and all cars must be parked by 10:15 a.m. Various historic vehicles will drive in convoy while masked living historians from the Long Island Living History Association pass in review. Cars will be admitted only with pre-reservation e-tickets purchased on a first come – first served basis and available for $25 by going on line at www. OBVRnassau.com. Families will be required to stay with their vehicles,
masked, and separated from other vehicles by a designated number of feet as directed by park safety personnel. A Parade Of History The Armor Museum hosts an operational collection of over forty vehicles, many of which will participate in the July 4th parade. Vehicles expected to be in motion include the legendary Sherman tank, the mighty Hellcat, halftracks, armored cars similar to those that liberated the Nazi death camps, Vietnam era combat vehicles, and the M48 Patton tank that would have confronted Soviet armor in the disastrous event the Cold War became an open conflict. The museum also will present operational replicas of several enemy vehicles as a dramatic reminder of the powerful forces that has faced America in its historic defense of democracy. The museum’s July 4th program is being
supported by Squad Security, PSEG, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Polimeni International, SUEZ Environmental, among others. Limited Number County Parks and Recreation officials remind that only a limited number of tickets will be sold due to parking restrictions inside the park mandated by COVID-19 protocols. Reserved e-tickets for the July 4th parade are available at www.OBVRnassau.com. Due to the pandemic, the Museum of American Armor remains closed, along with other museums across the New York metro area, but will be prepared to open its doors with new exhibits, armor assets and displays, maintaining strict adherence to CDC protocols, when permission is granted by state and county officials. The museum hosts over forty operational military vehicles and is unique in the New York metro region.

Syria is not a safe place for the American soldiers who are stationed there, but it’s even more dangerous for a dog. American troops have adopted a stray dog named Harley, raising her to be an important part of their team, and they refuse to leave her behind. Leaving her in Syria would be disastrous, so Paws of War is on a mission to help bring the dog back to the states, where she can live out her days in peace with “AJ.” “When these guys befriend a dog in a war zone it’s often what helps them get through each day,” explains Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “They absolutely know they can’t leave Harley behind, so we agreed to work together with them and other contacts we have in that are in a team effort to bring her back to America. But we can’t do it without the help of the public, because we need donations to pull this off.” The troops were out on a mission when they heard a puppy crying. When they investigated, they found six puppies, but only one that
was still alive. The others likely died of starvation or dehydration, and nobody knows what happened to their mother. They couldn’t leave the puppy behind, so they took her with them. The soldiers named her Harley and cared for the dog, getting her what she needed to thrive and grow. She’s now become an important part of their day, bringing love to their life and making everyone smile. Her presence has made them all feel like they have a little bit of home with them. Now that “AJ”, who’s name cannot be released due to security reasons, will be heading back to the United States, the troop is on board with having Harley go with him. They have reached out to Paws of War to help make it happen. “These soldiers know how dangerous it would be to leave their furry family member there in Syria,” added Misseri. “We will make every effort to bring Harley to America so she can live out her life here. The soldiers believe they

Paws of War rescues dogs, provides them with proper training, and then pairs them with veterans who need therapy animals, all free of charge. The Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center at Stony Brook University Hospital — the only designated burn care facility in Suffolk County, has 10 Safety Tips this July 4th Weekend as families continue to practice social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic. Many will spend the holiday in their backyards for barbecues, cookouts or build fire pits where there’s a greater risk to sustain a burn injury. To avoid injury, Steven Sandoval, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery and Medical Director of the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center at Stony Brook University Hospital, says “The best way to do this is to prevent the burn in the first place with safety tips and precautions to eliminate potential dangers.” Fireworks are safe for viewing only when being
used by professionals. Sparklers are one of the most common ways children become burned this holiday, even with a parent’s supervision. Do not have children around any fireworks, firepits, barbecues or hot coals. Teach them not to grab objects or play with items that can be hot. Go through a lesson where they learn to ask permission. Limit the use of flammable liquids to start your fire pits and barbecues. Use only approved lighter fluids that are meant for cooking purposes. No gasoline or kerosene. Don’t leave hot coals from fire pits and barbecues laying on the ground for people to step in. When cleaning grills, the use of wire bristle brushes can result in ingestion of sharp bristle pieces requiring surgery. If you are overly tired,
and consumed alcohol, do not use the stovetop, fire pit or a fireplace. Stay protected from the sun. Use hats and sunblock, and realize that sunblock needs to be reapplied after swimming or after sweating. Use the back burners of the stove to prevent children from reaching up and touching hot pots and pans. Always use oven mitts or potholders to remove hot items from the stove or microwave. Assume pots, pans and dishware are hot. “If burned do not go anywhere but a facility that specializes in burn treatment,” says Dr. Sandoval. As the only designated burn care facility for more than 1.5 million residents of Suffolk County, the Burn Center at Stony Brook University Hospital coordinates burn services throughout the county, and conducts training
