Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers

can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and ﬁll out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to ﬁnd out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Lastly, the farm is in need of some repairs; they need a new roof on their barn, plumbing assistance and fountain repair. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. OPIOID ABUSE AND OVERDOSE PREVENTION EDUCATION - Massapequa Takes Action Coalition partners with YES Community Counseling Center to provide Opioid Abuse and Overdose Prevention Education for families and concerned community members on Wednesday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) is partnering with YES Community Counseling Center (YESCCC) to provide Opioid Abuse and Overdose Prevention Education for families and concerned community members on Wednesday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. Expanding the awareness and availability of naloxone is a key part of YESCCC and MTAC’s public health response to the opioid epidemic. YESCCC continues to deliver FREE opioid prevention education and naloxone training across the Massapequas including local governments, first responders, schools, organizations, parents, and residents. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that is used to temporarily reverse the effects

of an opioid overdose, namely slowed or stopped breathing. Naloxone is a safe antidote to a suspected overdose and, when given in time, can save a life (Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service). Town & Friends of the Bay to Host Terrapin Monitoring And Beach Cleanup

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand recently announced the Town will partner with Friends of the Bay to host a Diamondback Terrapin Monitoring and Beach Cleanup Day, on Saturday, June 26, from 9 – 11 a.m. at Centre Island Beach in Bayville (rain date: June 27). “The Town of Oyster Bay is home to a large population of Diamondback Terrapins, a small species of turtle that lives in fresh or brackish water and has distinctive diamondshaped rings covering its shell,” Councilman

Hand said. “We recently launched Team Terrapin, a joint project with Friends of The Bay, to help protect this species whose conservation status is “Near Threatened.” During this Terrapin Monitoring and Beach Cleanup Event, volunteers will be trained to identify signs of nesting terrapins and build protective cages around them. These structures keep natural predators like raccoons and fox away from the terrapins, thus contributing to their survival. Alternatively, volunteers will also have the option to participate in a beach cleanup.

“A part of the Team Terrapin Initiative, this event will give families, scouts, religious groups, and students the opportunity to do their part in working to save a “Near Threatened” species and keep litter from accumulating on our shorelines.” Councilman Hand concluded. “I thank Friends of the Bay for cosponsoring this critical event with the Town.” All those interested in participating must register in advance online at https:// w w w. f r i e n d s o f t h e b a y. org/upcoming-volunteeropportunity.html.

Town Partners with NY Islanders to Offer Summer Street Hockey Clinic Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town is partnering with the New York Islanders to offer children in kindergarten through seventh grade a street hockey clinic. The program will be held at Town parks in SyossetWoodbury, Massapequa and Farmingdale. “We are so pleased to

He also was a member of the varsity wrestling team from eighth through 10th grade, and has worked at Calda Pizza since ninth grade. His educational career began in kindergarten at Birch Lane Elementary School. One aspect about joining the Marine Corps that particularly stands out for Michael is the ability to see the world. He is especially interested in traveling to Japan. Michael will have the opportunity to do it all thanks to the earning the scholarship, which he attributes to the great education he received in Massapequa and having teachers who constantly pushed him to do his best.

In an interview, he was asked questions about integrity and leadership. On June 25, just four days after graduating from Massapequa High School, Michael will leave for one month of training in Great Lakes, Illinois. That’s where he will begin his transformation into disciplined military personnel with academic, mental and physical training. After a few weeks back at home, he will head to San Diego in mid-August. While he will mostly live the next four years as a regular college student, Michael will have military obligations including special courses and a few nights of training every week. Massapequa High School senior Michael Augello has two strong interests – serving his country and getting a college education. Thanks to a sizeable grant from the United States Marine Corps, he will get to do both. Michael received a full scholarship, valued at $180,000, to attend San Diego State University in the fall while also learning to become a military officer. He was presented with his NROTC scholarship by Staff Sgt. Diego Albino, from the Marine Corps recruiting station in Hicksville, during a small ceremony outside of the school on June 10. Michael was joined by family members as well as Principal Barbara Lowell and guidance counselors Tracy Munson and Matt McCauley. “It’s very competitive,” Staff Sgt. Albino said of the scholarship, which only about 10 students in New York received this year. “A lot of people apply for it; few get it.” To be eligible, Michael had to score at least 1000 on his SATs and 74 on the Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery.
