New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment. New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for

weeks at a time. New Ground assisted her with applying and obtaining certain benefits her family was eligible for because of their chronic illness. This included a housing choice voucher, allowing Nina to attain a market rent apartment while she paid an affordable portion of the rent based on her household income. After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered. As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Students in the business education program at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus visited the Junior Achievement Finance Park to learn about financial planning. More than 30 ninth graders from the career and financial management class embarked on the journey on May 13. At Finance Park, students were given random life scenarios,

such as married, divorced, children and no children, and given jobs, salaries, credit scores and various amounts of debt. Students had to set up budgets for themselves based on their personal circumstances. They had to apply for a car loan and home loan, as well as shopping for good and services including a car, health insurance, child care, cell phone plan and groceries.

Many of the young consumers realized that the amounts they allotted for certain categories was not enough and had to make. “It was an eye-opening experience for them,” business teacher Christine Poggioli said. “Many of the students said they had a new appreciation for their parents and all the money they have to spend for different items.”

Seventh graders envisioned themselves as part of the solution to curb alcohol abuse through a technology-based project in their health classes at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. The students were tasked with creating alcohol awareness billboards that

could go at a train station or other prominent location. Health teacher Denise Robertson and technology learning coach Louisa Vecchione worked with students to come up with designs that had powerful images along with simple yet effective slogans. Ms. Robertson explained

that students could pick any anti-alcohol theme. Some focused on the negative health effects while others targeted drinking and driving. Students used Google Slides on their Chromebooks to create their billboards.

Author Shares His Craft

Laurence Pringle’s books about animals can be found in classroom libraries throughout East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. On May 10, students got to meet the man behind the words. Pringle spent the day at East Lake as the 2019 a u t h o r- i n - r e s i d e n c e , which was sponsored by the library, reading department and PTA. Since 2000, two dozen noted

children’s authors have visited the school to share in their craft. During presentations for each grade level, Pringle discussed the inspiration for his books as well as the writing, editing and publishing processes. Students were able to ask questions and gain valuable insights about nonfiction writing. Pringle also signed copies of his books for the school and visited East Lake’s literacy

displays. The author-in-residence program was coordinated by library media specialist Renee Susman and reading teachers Carmen Keaney, Debbie O’Mara and Allison Rattoballi with support from computer teaching assistant Susan Corrado. They explained that the goal is to have every student come away with at least one tip to improve his or her writing.

Fifth Graders Make Their Case As a follow-up activity to their law and forensic science units, fifth grade students in the Magnet program at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District participated in a mock trial. Magnet and STEAM teacher Lisa Gennardo’s classroom was transformed into a courtroom on May 28. Students used material for their study of forensic science to craft the fictitious case. They took on the

roles of judge, defendants, prosecuting and defense attorneys and witnesses, and wrote the entire script. The trial focused on a crime that occurred at a summer beach house owned by Felix Navidad. His “closest friends” all turned out to be suspects who were very eager to inherit his fortune. Parents were invited to the trial showcase and served as members of the jury to deliver a verdict. Ms. Gennardo explained

that mock trials teach essential skills such as public speaking, critical thinking and the art of forming a persuasive, cohesive argument. Crafting opening and closing statements required the students to consolidate a tremendous amount of material into a short narrative to present a compelling, coherent summary of the case.

Pioneers For Sustainable Living A once empty courtyard in the back of Massapequa High School has been transformed into a classroom for sustainable living. Health teacher Michael LaBella and his students constructed a greenhouse and planters for the new Go Green class. The class debuted in 2017-18 school year for a dozen students in the Career and Community Connections program, and this year was offered as a health education elective to all students. Enrollment in Go Green will expand from 65 students this year to more than 100 next year in five course sections. “We are creating an environment within the school for students to be conscientious of the Earth,” Health Education Chairwoman Denise Baldinger said. Mr. LaBella, who has agricultural experience from a family farm in Pennsylvania, said that the purpose of the class is to help students become smarter consumers, adopt healthy lifestyle practices and reduce negative impacts on the environment. Under the direction of Mr. LaBella, students constructed a 15-foot by 20-foot greenhouse, along with cedar tables

for plants. It also includes a functioning aquaponics system. The water from a fish pond feeds a gutter system to water plants and then travels back to the pond. Mr. LaBella said that the system uses 95 percent less water than a standard system because the water is recycled. Additionally, the waste from the koi fish provides fertilizer for the plants. The class creates its own fertilizer from a compost pile. Students bring in their food scraps from home which are added to any leftovers from the school cafeteria. The fertilizer is used in the 20 four-foot by eight-foot planter boxes adjacent to the greenhouse. Mr. LaBella said that while the courtyard is surrounded by walls on four sides, it gets good sunlight so it is an ideal spot. Students are currently growing beans, beets, cucumbers, kale, lettuce and peas. They hope to make their crops available to students and staff in a farmers market setting at the high school in June. Mr. LaBella is also planning to take students to Homecoming Farm in Amityville, a certified organic farm where members can grow food for themselves and people

in need. Sophomore Sema Ahmed said she likes learning where food comes from and about the intricacies of farming. She also doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty. “I really like that it’s a hands-on class,” she said. “I have a really big green thumb.” Her classmate Emmy Aird said she is gaining a better understanding about food quality and how growing practices can affect human health. She said that the knowledge gained in Go Green will help her when she is away at college and making more decisions about the food she buys. Mr. LaBella said that farming isn’t a well-known concept to suburban teenagers, but a better understanding of the agricultural world can make a lifelong difference. This year’s class will have the unique distinction of having created a fully functional greenhouse. “I want every student to know that they can do this,” he said. “At the end of this class they will be much smarter consumers and healthier individuals. The knowledge they gain can be carried with them for the rest of their lives.”

Two of the Massapequa School District’s longest serving principals will say goodbye at the end of June, as Lori Dano and Stephen Scarallo are headed for retirement. School for the past nine years. Mr. Scarallo was a high school social studies teacher before coming to Massapequa. He served as principal of Berner Middle School from 20032010, and then became Lockhart’s principal. Superintendent Lucille Iconis said that the 36 retirees, which included administrators, teachers, teacher assistants, custodians, monitors, nurses and secretaries, collectively totaled about 750 years of service to the Massapequa School District, with the longest tenured of the group having started in 1973.

She said that retirement is a “time to look back with pride on achievements” while looking ahead toward future endeavors. Board of Education President Timothy Taylor thanked them for their devotion to the children of Massapequa and wished each retiree a long, happy and healthy retirement. The board also awarded tenure to 30 staff members who successfully completed their probationary periods. The newly tenured group included administrators, teachers, teacher assistants, library media specialists and counseling staff.

Massapequa Road Runners Firecracker 5K The Massapequa Road Runner’s 39th Annual Firecracker 5K Road Race will be held on Sunday, June 30th, 2019 at 5:00 pm at Brady Park in the Inc. Village of Massapequa Park. This popular summertime race attracts over 600 runners, walkers and wheelchair participants, as well as 100+ children for the ¼ mile Fun Run that is held before the 5K. The event is held in conjunction with and the support of the Village of Massapequa Park and their 4th of July Week Celebration.

The race is part of the “Long Island Running Series” with prizes and awards, attracting top runners from across Long Island. The event is a fun family event that attracts children of all ages for the ¼ mile run. All kids participating in the ¼ mile run receive a finishing medal. Entertainment will include a clown, face painting and ice cream following the race. This year, the Massapequa Road Runners has elected to use a portion of the proceeds

to fund 2 scholarships which will be awarded to Massapequa High School track athletes to help defray some of the cost of college. The Massapequa Road Runners is a local running club that supports running as a healthy life style and welcomes runners and walkers of all ages and speed ability. The club has runs from Brady Park each Saturday and Sunday morning.
