Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced that the Town will partner with Island Harvest Food Bank and Car Show Long Island to host a special food drive called the “Cruise Thru Food Drop” on Saturday, June 26th (rain date of June 27th), at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. The following recipe for “Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mushroom-Shallot Butter” from Laurie McNamara’s “Simple Scratch” (Avery) is sure to please, especially when coupled with McNamara’s recipe for “Baked Beans,” a musthave staple for any backyard barbecue. Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mushroom-Shallot Butter Serves 4 to 6 8 tablespoons (1 stick) plus 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature 1⁄2 cup sliced shallot 1 heaping cup sliced cremini mushrooms 2 large cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon coarsely chopped fresh thyme leaves 1⁄4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed 1⁄4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper, plus more as needed 4 to 6 steaks (such as ribeye, New York strip or porterhouse) Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a medium skillet over medium-low heat. Add the shallot and cook until golden and slightly crispy, 7 to 8 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the shallot to a clean plate. In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter, then add the mushrooms, garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook until the mushrooms are softened, about 5 minutes. Transfer to the plate with the shallot and let cool. In a small bowl, use a rubber spatula to blend the remaining 8 tablespoons of butter with the cooled
mushroom mixture until combined. Place the butter in the center of a piece of parchment paper. Bring the edges together and press with your fingers to form the butter into a log. Roll and twist the ends before popping the butter into the refrigerator for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Set the steaks on the counter for 30 minutes to bring them up to room temperature. Meanwhile, preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high or about 400 F. Season both sides of the steaks with 2 pinches of salt and a pinch of pepper. Grill each steak for 6 to 8 minutes per side, depending on the thickness and the desired doneness. Tent with aluminum foil and let rest for 5 minutes. Slice the mushroom butter into coins and top each of the steaks with two coins before serving.

Combine the bacon and onion in a medium Dutch oven. Slowly cook over medium heat until the onion is tender and the bacon is cooked, 8 to 10 minutes. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together the ketchup, molasses, sugar, ground mustard, ground cloves, and 1 cup water to combine. Add the cooked beans and pour the mixture into the pot with the bacon and onion. Stir, cover and bake for 1 hour, stirring Baked Beans every 20 minutes. Serves 10 Add the salt and stir. 2 15-ounce cans navy Uncover and let sit for 15 to beans, drained and rinsed 20 minutes before serving.

Popular Graduation Traditions Graduation is steeped in tradition. Come the day of graduation, many gradsto-be might be focusing on receiving their diplomas and then celebrating after the ceremony. The hard work students put in affords them every right to celebrate once they’re officially anointed as new grads, but before the party begins it can be fun to reflect on the many traditions associated with graduation ceremonies. Cap and gown Graduation ceremonies simply wouldn’t be the same without caps and gowns. The tradition is anything but new, as Columbia University notes caps and gowns have been linked to academia since the 12th century. Back then, students wore gowns and hoods to emulate the clergy who taught them, but also to stay warm. Many universities dressed their scholars in gowns from the 1700s onward. In 1786, one school, Brown University, even mandated that degree candidates be clad in flowing robes and caps at commencement ceremonies. Though educators and students
may no longer wear caps and gowns when attending class or around campus, the tradition of doing so at commencement ceremonies has endured. Tassel turning The tradition of turning the tassel does not have the lengthy history of the cap and gown, dating back only decades rather than centuries. Graduates typically turn the tassels after everyone has received their degrees during the ceremony. The turn is symbolic of their transition from student to graduate. Tassels start on the right for high school students and college undergraduates and are then turned to the left, while recipients of master’s degrees and doctorates keep their tassels on the left throughout the commencement ceremonies. Tossing caps in the air The tossing of graduation caps in the air is believed to date back more than 100 years. Prior to 1912, graduates of the United States Naval Academy had to serve as midshipmen for two years before they were commissioned as officers.
As a result, they still needed their graduation caps. But beginning with the class of 1912, graduates were automatically commissioned as officers, so they no longer needed their hats. That led the graduates to throw them in the air, thus beginning one of the more fun and photo-worthy graduation traditions. Pomp and Circumstance This tradition marked by the playing of “Pomp and Circumstance” is rooted in the work of William Shakespeare, which makes it seem like a perfect fit for graduation ceremonies. Sir Edward Elgar composed “Pomp and Circumstance” in 1901 and the title for the song was inspired by a line in the bard’s “Othello.” Elgar received an honorary degree from Yale University in 1905, and during that ceremony “Pomp and Circumstance” was played. The song apparently made a strong impression, as it soon began to be played at various commencement ceremonies, a tradition that continues today.

Both John Adams, the second President of the United States, and his successor Thomas Jefferson passed away on July 4, 1826. The two men had an interesting relationship that became increasingly

But as time wore on, each man developed a different view of what the United States government should be, creating a rift in their relationship that was only widened by the 1800 presidential election. Jefferson ultimately claimed victory, a result so unnerving to Adams that he left Washington, D.C. prior to Jefferson’s inauguration. The two men would ultimately reconcile, exchanging more than 150 letters before dying within hours of one another on Independence Day in 1826.

June 10, 2021 Dear Merchants, Business Owners, and Fellow Members: The month of June brings great weather and the end of the fiscal year, which means the end of the Chamber business year as well - a year which we all want to forget and never go back to again as far as the pandemic goes. We managed to get through this, and with the help of God, we will all be safe as the days go by and this stays in the rearview mirror. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you out there as we mourn the loss of all loved ones that passed from this serious pandemic. May they all rest in God’s Care. The month of June also brings the Installation and the honoring of our volunteer firefighters in the Massapequa and North Massapequa Fire Departments. We look forward to this every year, as our firefighters are certainly very deserving of this honor, as they put their lives on the line many times during the year and get no compensation. Their dedication is immeasurable, and I look forward to June 24th at Bacaro Italian Tavern in Massapequa Park when we host them.

Yearbooks Are Important Mementos
Reaching senior year of high school or college is something to celebrate. It means that graduation is on the horizon and another chapter in students’ lives will soon come to a close, with a new one likely to begin shortly thereafter. School and graduation related traditions abound, from homecoming games to dances to class rings, and it can be difficult to figure out how to spend one’s time. While celebrations may look a little different this year due to the pandemic, yearbooks can offer a sense of normalcy for soon-to-be graduates. Seniors, particularly high school seniors, may find that their last year of school is, among many other things, expensive. In addition to college application fees, test prep courses, graduation garb, parties, photographs, and much more, students often weigh the option of purchasing a yearbook and wonder if it’s necessary. The yearbook experts at YearbookLife. com say the average cost of a yearbook is around $75 nationwide. Even though yearbooks may be somewhat costly, they can be valuable mementos
of time spent in school. Here are various reasons why yearbooks make for important, cherished mementos. • A yearbook will serve as a time capsule for trends, interests and newsworthy events that unfolded during students’ time in school. • Yearbooks promote a sense of school pride and unity. Students wondering whether to be involved with yearbook design or to purchase a book should consider the many benefits yearbooks offer.
Operation Deep Dive | Military Veteran Suicide Prevention Study Seeks Interviewees An average of 17 military veterans die by suicide every day, and Long Island residents have the opportunity to help end this crisis by supporting Operation Deep Dive (OpDD), a community-based veteran suicide prevention study taking place in New York and 12 other states across the country. The four-year study is led by national nonprofit America’s Warrior Partnership and researchers from the University of Alabama with support from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation. The study directors will host a Facebook Live broadcast on Wednesday, June 16, at 2 p.m. EST to discuss local suicide prevention initiatives with guest speakers Beth Murphy, Senior Deputy Commissioner at Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs, and Marcelle Leis, Director of Veteran Services at
the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. The Facebook Live will be viewable on the America’s Warrior Partnership Facebook page both during and after the broadcast. Visit www.AmericasWarriorPartnership.org/AWPartnership to view the broadcast. During the Facebook Live, the research team will discuss how local residents can support the study. For example, OpDD is currently seeking participants to interview for the study. Questions will focus on how the participant’s friend or loved on interacted with the community before their death. To be eligible for an interview, participants must: • Be 18 years old or older; • Have a relative, loved one, friend or co-worker who was a veteran that died by suicide or a non-natural cause of death within the last 24 months; and • Have lived in
the same community as the veteran at the time of their death. The interview participant and veteran must have lived in the same community prior to the veteran’s death. Visit www. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and fill out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to find out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Lastly, the farm is in need of some repairs; they need a new roof on their barn, plumbing assistance and fountain repair. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Then the diploma can be displayed in one location and the wood plaque in another. Place it under glass Display the diploma beneath the glass top of a coffee table. When entertaining guests, the diploma can make for a unique conversation piece. A school diploma is worthy of recognition. There are various creative ways to display these documents that reflect the hard work and success of their recipients.

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and
check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great crossreference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your
security patch and antivirus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks:
Give cash or gift cards. criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.
