Assemblyman Durso Collecting Baby Formula New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso, in coordination with Island Harvest Food Bank, is holding a baby formula collection drive to address the critical supply shortage and support parents in need across Long Island. Assemblyman Durso is asking residents and community organizations to kindly donate unexpired and unopened baby formula. All donated items will be distributed to parents in
critical need throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties through Island Harvest Food Bank’s emergency operations distribution unit. “According to The Atlantic, 40 percent of formula is out of stock nationwide—a twentyfold increase since the first half of 2021, said Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. “With the help of the Assemblyman Durso, Island Harvest is ready to mobilize to help parents find relief.
All formula collected will be distributed to vulnerable populations in critical need across Long Island through our emergency operations distribution unit.” “With the nationwide baby formula shortage having a real impact on families across Long Island, I ask our neighbors to assist those most in need by donating unexpired, unused formula, “ said Assemblyman Durso. “I believe that we get through difficult times by
uniting together and letting our humanity shine. For their biography reports, students could pick an impactful person from the past or present to research. The project allowed them to hone their technology skills as they used digital resources like Epic! books to find information and Book Creator to design their multipage reports. Students had to include facts such as when the person was born and notable achievements. Among the famous figures that students researched were wrestler John Cena, Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Tesla owner Elon Musk and aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright. Frank Sinatra said it best – “Now the end is near, and so I face the final curtain.” These are words that come to mind as I complete my term and final message to all after two years of being President of this fine organization. It was indeed my privilege to be the President from 2020-2022 during very interesting times and occurrences. I took office three months after COVID-19 began, and I did not know what to expect. Faith and reason kept me going, and now after two years, the Chamber is on a fine path, continuing our great programs and services. To avoid the risk of leaving anyone out, I will not mention names, but I must thank all involved for making the last two years memorable indeed.

This again is what makes us better as a community organization. One last reminder - the July 4th parade will take place in Massapequa Park and kickoff is 11:00 AM. CLASSIC COUNTRY COMES TO MASSAPEQUA PARK - Tennessee Walt’s The Other Great American Songbook will be presented on Saturday, July 2, at 2 p.m. at the Massapequa Public Library, 40 Harbor Lane in Massapequa. The classic country music of the 1920s through the 1950s—the music of Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and more—will be coming to the Massapequa Public Library on Saturday, July 2, at 2 p.m. Tennessee Walt’s The Other Great American Songbook is a oneman concert featuring two dozen songs from country’s greatest songwriters, the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lynn and Hank Williams, arranged for voice and piano. It’s also an intriguing, factfilled look into what has made country music (and its most prominent descendant, rock ‘n’ roll) popular throughout America and beyond. “Think of it as a cabaret show, except that, instead of voice-and-piano versions
of Tin Pan Alley songs from the 1920s through 1950s, these are Music Row songs of the same period,” said Gayden Wren, the musical-theater veteran who performs as Tennessee Walt. “From those two streets have come the lion’s share of America’s greatest songs. Both streets were originally dedicated to pop music, music made for a buck, but in the past 20 or 30 years we’ve come to realize the classical aspects of the songs of Jerome Kern, George Gershwin and Rodgers & Hart. I think it’s time we recognized that there’s that same classical essence in the greatest country songs. “This isn’t what people may think of when they hear the words `country music,’” Wren said. “It’s voice and piano, not fiddles and steel guitars, and I won’t be yodeling.
And this isn’t the country of Toby Keith or Carrie Underwood—it’s the older, purer country music that inspired them and everybody from Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley to Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Ringo Starr. Father’s Day History
Each year, the third Sunday in June is a time to pay homage to fathers and the millions of other men who have stepped into the role of father. While it may seem as though Father’s Day has been around forever, it didn’t become a nationally recognized holiday in the United States until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed Joint Resolution 187 into law. Many thank Sonora Smart Dodd for making Father’s Day happen. In 1909, while attending a Mother’s Day sermon in church, Dodd felt fathers were equally deserving of praise. To honor her own father, a Civil War veteran and widower
who raised six children alone, Dodd petitioned for a Father’s Day on June 5th (the anniversary of her father’s death) in her native Spokane, Wash. The celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June. Another account says Grace Golden Clayton came up with the idea for a Father’s Day in 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia. Clayton was inspired to celebrate fathers after 361 local men perished in a deadly mine explosion. Clayton brought the idea up to the minister of her local church. Historians say that Father’s Day may even be a much older idea. St. Joseph’s Day, which
was celebrated each year on March 19 in Catholic nations of Europe since the medieval era, and later elsewhere around the world, commemorates Joseph, the husband of Mary and father figure to Jesus. It was said that Joseph should be held up as the ideal example of fatherhood. The Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates St. Joseph’s Day on July 20. In the Orthodox Christian Church, the second Sunday before the Nativity is celebrated as the Sunday of the Forefathers — celebrating all of Jesus’ male ancestors, with an emphasis on Abraham, the patriarch of the Jewish faith.

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental and intellectual disabilities across New York City and Long Island. Little Flower’s mission is to improve the well-being of those they serve, which they do through rigorous medical and mental health programs and services. They believe that the devastating effects of trauma, poverty, racism, substance abuse, violence and lack of opportunity – particularly on children and families – can be healed with the proven use of effective therapy and support services. They provide care through a “What’s happened to you?” lens as opposed to “What is wrong with you?” lens. Children who have experienced trauma, grief and loss, substance abuse, or have poor social skills, are verbally or physically aggressive, are on the autism spectrum, etc. are offered integrated interdisciplinary treatment in a therapeutic environment at the Residential Treatment Center (RTC) on their Wading River campus. An interdisciplinary treatment team of social workers, mental health staff, childcare staff, educators, medical professionals and a recreation therapist formulate individualized treatment plans that address the specific needs of each of those children. The underlying belief of the center is that a healthy community helps heal. At the RTC, children reside in modern cottages designed to feel like home. The cottages include individual rooms, common areas, a large dining room and a kitchen. Recreational programming there includes the Conway Recreation Center, athletic fields and courts and an outdoor swimming pool. The youth can also participate in off-campus recreation activities such as volunteer services and community involvement. The RTC also offers additional therapies and services, such as the Culinary Arts
program or music and art therapy. Additionally, the youth also attend the Little Flower Union Free School District, a special act public school for students with special educational needs, which is also on their Wading River campus. Additionally, Little Flower also offers a Mental Health and Medical Department that utilizes a traumainformed, multi-systemic approach to support to all foster children. Adhering to best practices, nurses coordinate and monitor medical care, including overseeing weekly well-child clinic, and provide screenings, child and caregiver education, assist pediatricians with routine physicals and provide body checks as needed. Children receive dental services and are referred to specialists when recommended. In addition to the RTC, Little Flower also offers Community Family Treatment & Support Services (CFTSS) and Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). Their organization’s service providers address various needs, such as daily living skills, coping skills, crisis prevention, socialization and employment needs, via telehealth, in the home, school and community. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for future use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2022 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “We
accept photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website, social media pages and brochures.” Councilwoman Johnson noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but high-quality photos may also be submitted. Emailed photos should be sent to photos@ oysterbay-ny.gov. Printed photos can be submitted to the Town’s
Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and brief description of the photo are included with their submission. The photographer is responsible for the correct spelling of the names and subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects they may appear in a Town publication.
