POW/MIA CHAIR DEDICATION - On Sunday, May 30th, 2021, a memorial service was held at Huntington Town Hall, for veterans and the dedication of the POW/MIA chair that was purchased and donated by Dr. Cynthia Paulis to a gold star mom Charlee Miller whose son was killed 15 years ago in Afghanistan. Ms. Miller is the director of The Art League in Dix Hills. Her son Col. Joseph Fenty was killed in a helicopter accident and never got to meet his newborn who was 20 days old. Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier recently announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will offer a swim program this summer at outdoor pools located in SyossetWoodbury Community Park and Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa. “Get ready to dive into Oyster Bay Town pools this summer and improve your stroke,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We are proud to offer this swim program to children that reside in the Town of Oyster Bay. Swim programs like this really bring the community together and are an integral part in the training of our young swimmers for the future.” Town of Oyster Bay residents aged 6 to 16 are eligible to register for the swim program. Workouts will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, from 9:30am to 10:30am

beginning Wednesday, July 7th and ending on Friday, August 13th. If a session is cancelled, make-up day(s) will be attempted. Registration must be postmarked by June 30th. Councilwoman Maier stated, “Many of our young people lost the ability to jump into the pool and improve their swim skills during the pandemic due to restrictions in place at the time. Now, with the proper safety protocols in place, we’re happy to offer this swim program and the chance for young people to exercise while improving their strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and more!” Program fees (checks or money orders only) are $35 per swimmer for season pass holders, and a $10 discount is offered for each additional swimmer in the same family. For residents without a season pass, the program fee is $50 per swimmer. A $15

discount is offered for each additional swimmer in families without a season pass. Proof of residency/age required when registering, with TOB residents given first preference. Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors. To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen, compliments of

Councilwoman Laura Maier. Councilman Hand added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Tidal check valves are a cost-effective means to achieve a first line of defense when protecting against tidal flooding. For that reason, we installed three valves, and have another on the way, to stop street flooding during high tides in Massapequa.” Over the past several months, three tidal check valves were fabricated and installed on Clocks Boulevard. These tidal check valves stop the infiltration of salt water through the storm water

pipe and into the street, preventing flooding during high tide cycles. A fourth tidal check valve will be installed further north on Clocks Boulevard and Delta Road later this year. Tidal check valves have an internal saddle that functions similar to a flap gate, which allows flow through the storm water drainage pipe only in the downstream direction. This same internal saddle closes with minimal back pressure and prevents tidal waters from back flowing through the storm water drainage pipe and flooding our roadways and adjacent ground surfaces.

To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Town Councilman Tom Hand invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Monday, June 21st from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Residents can save lives by donating blood this June at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive on June 21st.”

To protect against tidal waters entering roadways and flooding homes, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that the Town of Oyster Bay has installed tidal check valves within existing storm water drainage systems on Clocks Boulevard in Massapequa. Tidal flooding has occurred in this neighborhood due to the low-lying nature of the roadway and nearby areas with hydraulic connections to adjacent tidally influenced water bodies via storm water drainage systems. The Massapequa School District announces that its Summer Recreation and Sports Camps will be offered this year and are open to all students residing within the district. There will be changes to the programs to comply with New York State guidance for social distancing and COVID-19 safety protocols. Summer Recreation, for children entering grades K-5, will be held from July 6 through Aug. 6, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the elementary buildings. Due to construction, East Lake’s program will be housed at McKenna Elementary School. The cost is $120 per week, per student. The teen program for students entering grades 6-8 will take place at the Ames Campus each day from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $100 per week, per student. The week-long sports campus will begin June 28 and run through July 30. Sports include baseball, basketball, cheerleading, field hockey,

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed

Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. This season saw a record number of players in the Town’s hockey program, with over 500 players participating in Town leagues and clinics. As more people work remotely, electricians and safety advocates are warning that various missteps may be putting people at unnecessary risk of fire and other unsafe conditions. Electrical equipment is necessary to run home offices just like it is traditional offices. Some people may find they have a shortage of electrical outlets to power their devices, and as a result they may turn to extension cords or power strips. While

that may seem like an easy fix, it is easy to inadvertently overload outlets and circuits by connecting more than one power strip or extension cord together in a practice known as “daisy chaining.” According to the U.S. Office of Compliance, using a daisy chain in the workplace violates the National Electrical Code as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rules. While it may not

break code at home, overloading any outlets increases risk for fire. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Overload causes products to overheat, and that can spark fires in the power cords themselves or inside the wall where electrical lines are hidden.

World War II Weekend To Include A Visit From The Allies’ “Big Three” With Living Historians Representing FDR, Churchill, And Stalin “The Big Three” of World War II will make an appearance at this year’s World War II Encampment Weekend, June 19th and 20th, at the Museum of American Armor inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, Long Island. Beside an operational array of Allied and enemy armor, interpreters who portray President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Britain’s Winston Churchill, and Soviet Russia’s Stalin will greet visitors and remind them of the extraordinary alliance that confronted and defeated Nazi Germany. Members of the Long Island Living History Association will also present uniforms, tactics, and weapons of that era. Armor Museum president and founder Lawrence Kadish, observed, “Our continuing mission at the Armor Museum is to bring history to life so that a new generation of Americans understand that the precious gift of freedom was bought and paid for by the sacrifice of those who came before us.” Armor Museum trustee, former U.S. Congressman Peter King, stated, “Living history has become an essential part of keeping our nation’s heritage alive and relevant at a time when online platforms have created a virtual alternative universe

for too many of our young people. To see these vehicles operate in the field opens a journey of study and education for many of our visitors.” The Armor Museum’s Senior Trustee, Michael Sapraicone, noted, “World War II Weekend is designed to remind Long Islanders that they have heroes in their families. That medal in the back of the dresser? It was for your grandfather’s valor.

That fading honorable discharge certificate? It was won on a far off battlefield. And the freedoms we enjoy?
