Saf-T-Swim Helps Families Splash Into Long Island Summer Safely As summer approaches, the local swim school urges parents and families to practice the following water safety tips from the Saf-T-Swim, Think Water Safety, Think S.P.L.A.S.H. guideline: S = Swim Lessons. It is imperative to teach children and caregivers how to swim and learn basic safety instructions. Swim lessons are an essential tool for helping children learn life-saving skills year-round. In addition to providing fundamental knowledge and techniques, children also gain confidence while learning to love and respect the water. P = Put Away Toys, Put Up Ladder. All toys and ladders should be stored away when not in use to avoid slips and falls, or entry without supervision. L = Life Jackets. Life jackets should be worn when on a
boat, canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. A = Adult Always Watching. Children should never be left unattended in or near a pool or any body of water, including a bath. Be sure to establish an adult water watcher to make sure that no child is ever left unsupervised—not even for a minute. S = Shut All Gates. Use self-closing and self-latching gates, gate alarms, pool alarms, children’s personal alarms, door alarms, and motion detecting devices. H = How to Rescue. Teach all caregivers infant, child/ adult CPR, first aid, and water rescue techniques. Always have the proper rescue equipment on hand: Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs), life ring, shepherds hook.

Saf-T-Swim announced a series of water safety tips to help families prepare for a safe, fun summer in and out of the water. The guidelines embody the proud member of the Long Island community’s mission to empower children with life-saving swim skills and dedication to teaching water safety. Bobby Hazen, District Manager of Saf-T-Swim and founder of End Drowning Now, says: “More than 90% of pool drownings happen at home involving young children while a caregiver was present. Swimming lessons, fencing, locking ladders, proper pool covers, and alarms can help this. Sadly, drowning statistics across the country have dramatically increased because of the pandemic, as there have been more pools installed and more distractions.”

Student Leaders Are Mental Health Mentors Student council leaders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District take on many tasks, from spearheading activities to promoting school spirit, but they also serve as social and emotional role models. Four years ago, the district launched a partnership with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, implementing the RULER philosophy. The social and emotional learning initiative launched at Berner, and has now become part of the school’s culture. Students learn to recognize, understand, label, express and regulate their emotions. Principal Jason Esposito said that the purpose of RULER is to show students that their feelings, positive or negative, matter and are valid. The goal is to help them to better understand their emotions and express themselves in a productive way. Student council members model strategies for their peers on how to be in control of their emotions. “They embody the traits of people who are emotionally intelligent,” Mr. Esposito said. “They listen to others and they’re aware of each other’s
feelings.” Students noted the impact that they can have on those around them. If someone is having a bad day, that negative energy can spread. Conversely, a positive attitude can go a long way in cheering up others. Eighth grader Tatum Brennan said with emotional intelligence comes the tools to help out a friend who is having a tough time. “You can just make someone’s day by smiling,” added sixth grader Ty Miranda. Kiera Conaghan and Vivienne West noted how their feelings can impact how they do in school or when playing a sport. They said that it is important to have strategies to manage their emotions so they are in a position to succeed. Sixth grade Gabby Anselmo added that it is important to start every morning on a good note because that sets the tone for the day. “We take what we learned and apply it to realworld situations,” Kiera said, of how students use these skills and strategies in their lives. Students have learned several techniques to help regulate their emotions, explained sixth grader Frank Sulawa. They can take deep breaths, count
backwards or have a metamoment, which is a time to pause and reflect before acting. Seventh grader Riley Donohue said that all students face some degrees of stress and nerves, and the RULER philosophy tools help them manage. The mood meter, a colorcoded chart that represents different emotions based on levels of pleasantness and energy, is a particularly valuable resource. In one of the conference rooms, Berner has a large mood table, a social and emotional learning version of the periodic table of elements. The student council leaders say they are grateful that their school puts such a strong emphasis on social and emotional learning, and it makes them feel cared for. Seventh grader Kevin Kern likes the focus on self-care and feels it benefits his emotional well-being. “The school really does a good job with that, to show us how we’re feeling and helping us to feel better,” seventh grade Alex Fischetti said, who noted that the motivational signs and quotes around the school are part of the “little things” that make a big difference.
Eastline Theatre Brings Free Shakespeare To Parks Across Long Island Beginning June 18 After last year’s inaugural tour of Romeo & Juliet, EastLine Theatre returns to those same sunny Italian streets for The Two Gentlemen of Verona. This rollicking take on Shakespeare’s classic comedy will feature original live music and tour to a dozen scenic locations across Long Island. All performances will be free, fun, and family friendly. “We started our outdoor Shakespeare program in 2021 as a response to the pandemic, in an effort to produce safe and accessible takes on classic theatrical literature” says Nicole Savin, co-artistic director of EastLine Theatre. “After an overwhelming response to last year’s production, we are thrilled to return to outdoor theatre and bring Shakespeare back to some of Long Island’s most beautiful locations.” Scheduled performances are: 6/18 - Clark Botanic Garden, Albertson - 6PM 6/25 - Gerry Pond Park, Roslyn - 6PM 6/26 - Amityville Beach, Amityville - 5PM 7/2 - Sachem Public Library, Holbrook - 3PM 7/10 - Amityville Beach,

A Successful Baby Formula Collection Drive
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Tom Hand and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato partnered with Town resident Carmela Shimansky to host a Baby Formula Collection Drive at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa on Sunday, May 22nd. Dozens of residents donated unexpired, unused formula – which was then distributed to families who are experiencing difficulty in finding formula as the nationwide storage continues. “The nationwide baby formula shortage is causing a crisis for many families and leaving many to panic as store shelves are often empty,” said
Supervisor Saladino. “We all know that once little ones move onto food, families are often left with extra formula in their pantries. We ask that you open your hearts and cupboards by donating unexpired, unused formula to his organization so that families facing shortages are able to provide for their newborns.” At the start of the pandemic, Massapequa resident Carmela Shimansky launched a Facebook page ‘One Parent to Another,’ to help mothers in need of baby formula and other childcare necessities. Working with neighbors and friends in the community, Carmela connected with local moms who had items they no
longer needed and asked them to pay it forward by donating them to others. Carmela contacted Councilman Steve Labriola to coordinate efforts with the Town of Oyster Bay. “The goal here is really to help those families who can’t get to the stores, who can’t go from place to place trying to find what they need,” Ms. Shimansky said. “We hope to reach as many people as possible so that they can provide for their families.” For more information on this and other upcoming events helping local families, visit Carmela’s page on Facebook, One Parent to Another, or www. oysterbaytown.com.
Johnson Announces The Return Of Youth Tennis Programs Also Hiring Summer Tennis Assistants
Councilwoman Michele Johnson recently announced the return of Youth Tennis Programs for Summer 2022 and that the Town is now hiring Summer Tennis Assistants. Held at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park and Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale beginning
on Tuesday, July 5th, the program will feature 6-week sessions for boys and girls ages 5-8. “Our youth tennis clinic has quickly become a very popular recreational and instructional program. This program is a great opportunity for children with no prior tennis

One of this organization’s oldest and largest programs is its family foster care program, which has served children and families throughout New York City and Long Island since 1952. Little Flower is committed to finding safe and nurturing homes for children and young adults that are unable to remain home with their families because they believe every child should have guidance, stability and love.

Little Flower strives to meet the immediate needs of children entering foster care by partnering with dedicated foster parents who bring experience and skills in supporting children experiencing trauma. Potential foster parents undergo a thorough application and screening process, complete training, and participate in a home study before becoming a foster parent. The Little Flower team provides ongoing support and services to foster parents to ensure they can create the most nurturing environment for the foster children in their care. Additionally, Little Flower partners with foster parents and children’s families to support the children while their family receives the support and services they need to safely parent upon the child’s return from foster care. They also work with extended family to find relatives or other permanent homes for children who cannot safely return to their parents. This
For children requiring specialized care, Little Flower offers a Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home (TFBH) program based on their Wading River campus that works with children placed in foster care through Nassau or Suffolk County. Therapeutic foster parents are provided with additional training and certification to best care for the specialized needs of the foster children in their home. In addition to providing temporary care for children in a safe and nurturing environment, foster parents work closely with the organization’s social work team and the child’s parents in support of family reunification or permanency planning and ensure children are available to attend family visits. Foster parents model positive behavior, provide guidance and positive experiences, as well as support educational, dental, medical, and mental health needs of the child. Little Flower is proud to partner with such compassionate individuals willing to help children in need thrive and reach their full potential. Vivian M., a foster parent with Little Flower for more than 13 years, shared that she became a foster parent because she “loves children and wanted to make a difference.”

Such information includes the name and description of the drug, the directions for use, actions to be taken in the event of a missed dose; instructions for proper storage, any common reasonably anticipated adverse effects associated with the use of such drug, and manufacturer precautions and relevant warnings. “For most of us, our pets are members of our families and when they are sick or in pain, we want to know as much as possible about possible treatments and their consequences,” said Senator Brooks. “Since veterinarians are already provided this information, it would seem only common sense to advise pet owners as to all potential side effects of prescribed medications. With the passage of Bouy’s
Law we are making this a legal requirement so that more informed decisions can be made and potential tragedies averted.” All for the love of a dog… In 2013, Mary Kate Tischler and her late husband Jimmy took their beloved 3 year old Yellow Labrador Retriever, Bouy, to have routine knee surgery after which he was prescribed a painkiller to aid his recovery. Unbeknownst the Tischlers, the drug was known to have serious side-effects on some dogs and because they had not been given any prior warning from the veterinarian, they began to administer the drug as per his instructions. As a result, Bouy began to suffer acute kidney failure and was eventually put to sleep. Sadly, this tragedy, like many others affecting pet-owners across New York State, might have been avoided had there
been a requirement to establish informed consent for prescribed medications. “From the moment when Buoy’s tragic fate became clear to us, Jimmy and I began efforts to ensure that Buoy’s short life would have meaning,” said Mary Kate. “The most important thing to us was to raise awareness about the lack of required warnings and to attempt to ensure that no other pet would suffer the way that Buoy did. And, when Jimmy himself suffered an untimely death six years ago, I continued to march on with our fight for the enactment of Buoy’s Law. Today, I am confident that Jimmy and Buoy are smiling down on me, very proud!” Now that Bouy’s Law has passed both the Senate and Assembly it is expected to be signed by Governor Hochul before the end of the year.

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach
program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

Town To Host Collection Drive On World Blood Donor Day In recognition of World Blood Donor Day and in an effort to help hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, June 14th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many
people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy

World War II Weekend At The Museum Of American Armor Will Observe The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank “Calling All Sherman Veterans For A Tank Side Dedication Ceremony” The 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe will be the featured armor vehicle during this year’s World War II Encampment Weekend at the Museum of American Armor inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, Long Island, on Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank veterans to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary and participating in an oral histories project that memorializes their experiences. In addition to the Sherman, the weekend will feature military reenactments presented by the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and a parade of operational armor vehicles that comprise the museum’s extensive collection. The Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish
