Book Drive Students from two schools in the Massapequa School District recently came together to promote reading by collecting hundreds of books for a local nonprofit organization. The Helping Hands club at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus hosted its annual book drive to benefit the Book Fairies. The Long Island-based nonprofit organization distributes books to people in need throughout the
metropolitan area to nurture a love of reading. Ninth-graders created posters and made announcements in their homeroom classes seeking gently used books for readers of all ages. Students in the Community Career Connections program at the high school’s main campus also supported the cause and the combined effort generated about 700 books. Students from the two schools met with each
other in the Ames library on May 25th, when the CCC program delivered its donation. That afternoon, under the direction of advisers Alyssa Levine and Karen Matros, members of Helping Hands sorted all of the books by age group. “You just help so many people, especially kids, when you donate, and it’s a good feeling,” said Helping Hands member BOOK DRIVE - Students from the Ames Campus Helping Hands club and Community Gabriella Marsico who said that reading is one of her Career Connections program at Massapequa High School collected reading material for the Book Fairies. Planting Seeds of Knowledge Plants are sprouting in a second-grade classroom at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, as students
learn what conditions are ideal to sustain life. No two plants in Mary Ann Colarusso’s class were grown under the same conditions so the
children could study the effects of temperature, light and other variables. For example, one plant was given a mixture of water and laundry
detergent to understand the impact of pollutants. Seeds were planted in soil, sand and water to see which material was best.
Mrs. Colarusso said that the experiments were based on the questions that her students had about plant life. The children used
rulers and magnifying glasses to keep track of the progress of each plant and recorded their findings in seed observation journals.

The benches sit at the entrance to the popular bike trail that leads to the south shore beaches. The remainder of the money raised was donated to The Miles for Matt Foundation, an organization committed to public safety after the death of a young bicyclist, whose statue stands tall in front of the renovated benches.

My alma mater, Lindy High School, recently held its senior prom last week, bringing to mind my own end-of-year soirees which took place so many years ago. Our senior prom was, of course, a highlight; even more so for the fact that it was held at the top of the World Trade Center, at the one and only Windows on the World. What a magical night it was, and what an unforgettable time we had celebrating among the clouds, overlooking the greatest city in the world. Often forgotten in the recollections of high school, however, was the equally memorable evening we had at our junior prom. Held at the famed Narragansett Inn, it brought the elegance of our first “real” dance to our hometown, complete with swirling gowns and high heels, and hair and makeup appointments for all on the afternoon of the big event. Remember, at this point,
sweet sixteen’s had yet to take on the extravagance of a small wedding, and proms truly were the formal affairs of the age. Everything down to the smallest detail was coordinated, from corsage colors to jewelry and accessories, to the tiny flowers and rhinestone clips which adorned many of the girls’ hair. The class voted on their pick for “Junior Prom Song” in the weeks leading up to the event, forgoing the more current hits for a classic from Long Island’s own Billy Joel, “This is the Time.” I remember taking pictures beforehand at my grandparents’ house, walking down the big staircase and masquerading in all sorts of corny poses for the camera. This, of course, predated the advent of cell phones and the notorious “selfies” of today; but every single collection of friends had the same standard photo in front of their limo, couples angled inward, corsages on display.
There was something elegant in the simplicity. Junior prom was a bit more casual for our group. Instead of a limo, we carpooled. Instead of any post-prom festivities, we stopped off at McDonald’s on the way home – in the excitement of the evening, it seems no one had really taken the time to sit down and eat. We were too busy taking photos by the grand piano in the lobby, cheering on the prom court…and dancing, of course. I remember coming home that night and sitting up for hours, recollecting every last detail of the evening to my parents, still in my gown and high heels, my hair a little disheveled but none the worse for wear, not wanting the day to end. Sure, senior prom may have had the pomp and circumstance and the expectation of great things; but junior prom, for me, far exceeded all that. It was, truly the time to remember.
The five core values of being a Massapequa Chief — character, honesty, integrity, excellence and family — are prominently and colorfully on display at the main entrance to Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus following the completion of a new mural. Last fall, the school hosted a competition with the theme “What does being a part of the Massapequa Chiefs family mean to you?” The mural needed to include the Chiefs head logo and a mention of the Class of 2020, which is the current ninth-grade class. The Shared Decision
Making Committee of administrators, teachers, students and parents narrowed the 50 submissions down to 10 finalists. The student body then voted on the design created by Jaclyn Portogallo. Over the last several months, students have been sketching and painting under the supervision of art teacher Suzanne Perakakis. In addition to Jaclyn, students who contributed their talents were Olivia Bembenek, Sienna Bitetto, Morgan Frederick, Zach Gerstenfeld, Juliette Gonsor, Alyssa Iavarone,
Nicole Maggio and Melissa Pollich. Jaclyn said that the blue-and-gold mural came out even better than she envisioned and is proud to make a contribution to the school that will remain for a long time. “The mural is brilliant and it looks amazing,” added Principal Jordan McCaw. “Jaclyn’s design truly captured what it means to be a Massapequa Chief. As people come into our school, including our new students each year, they will see this and understand what we are all about.”

Improving Reading Skills
For quite a while now I tried to figure out What love, admiration and spells are about. Powers of a psyche are mine from time to time Most often when cupid his bells lets chime. I actually feel the thoughts of people dear to me Without being told, their deepest concerns I see. Spells are vibrant declarations of a nameless force They have in a chosen media their source. Onto my open umbrella those spells often fall Slowly one by one to the ground they roll. I don’t want them to get me into their grip I am afraid that into obsession I might slip.
First-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District participated in a reading comprehension exercise called “What Makes You Say That?” The students looked at several different pieces of artwork and wrote down their
thoughts. It taught them that when they analyze a reading passage, they have to cite evidence from the text to back up their arguments. Teacher Kim Kelly adopted this strategy after attending the Project Zero Classroom training at Harvard University,

Keys to Good Typing Sixth-graders in the Massapequa School District have been working on their typing skills during a sixweek keyboarding course. The instruction is part of the training that the district offers to students before receiving their own Chromebooks next year.
As part of the district’s “Learning Anytime, Anywhere” initiative, the current sixth-grade class will receive their own device upon entering seventh grade at Berner Middle School. The students will use their Chromebooks in school
and at home to complete many of their assignments. The district has been offering instruction during library periods. Students follow lessons on Typing. com, which shows them how to position their hands on the keyboard and which fingers to use for specific
keys. Each lesson focuses on a set of letters. Students can see their accuracy rate and words per minute. Because the program is web-based, they also can practice at home. Ishanee BrownMurphy, who teaches keyboarding classes at
Unqua Elementary School, said she has been showing students proper posture. Following the correct technique for typing can prevent wrist injuries in the future, she added. Touch typing — typing without looking at the keyboard — allows people
to better focus on what they are writing and their ideas. It is an example of cognitive automaticity, which is the ability to do things without conscious attention of awareness, like riding a bike.
