Principals Named The Massapequa School District Board of Education appointed a pair of elementary principals for the 2019-20 school year. Dr. Kristi Gerhard, the assistant principal at Fairfield Elementary School for the past four years, will become the building’s principal. She is replacing Lori Dano, who is retiring at the end of the school year. Before coming to Massapequa, Dr. Gerhard was a fifth grade teacher and a second and fourth grade English as a New Language teacher in the Long Beach School District, as well as pre-kindergarten teacher in Farmingdale. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education and interdisciplinary studies

Learning About Life

First graders are raising baby chicks at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, an annual spring activity that helps children learn about animal life cycles. Several weeks ago, each first grade class received eggs from a farm, which were then placed in an

incubator. During the 21day incubation period, students learned many facts about the development of baby chickens. They also performed experiments with store-bought eggs, such as an egg strength test. Just before Memorial Day, the eggs hatched. Teacher Danielle DiAlto

said the first two eggs in her classroom hatched overnight, followed by three the next day, which her students got to watch. The chicks were then transferred to a brooder and supplied with food and water. Children gave the chicks names and learned how to carefully hold the tiny animals.

MAKING MOVEMENT A PRIORITY - GoNoodle has become a popular new tool in classrooms at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District to promote movement and mindfulness. While speaking with Robyn, she shared a great story about a routine visit with her dental hygienist, Sue. Sue was explaining how arthritis was really becoming a problem in her hands. After a short discussion with Sue, Robyn challenged her to cut out all dairy for a month. After only a few days Sue called Robyn to share she was already having less pain and was now fully committed to making it through the dairy-free month. Through the month Sue made a few appointments with Robyn and made a few other small changes to her diet. Not long after that first month Sue’s arthritic pains were gone, she lost 30 pounds, reduced her bad cholesterol and her blood pressure normalized. All welcomed benefits but completely unexpected by Sue, although Robyn

certainly knew. As Sue felt more fit and energetic, Robyn encouraged her to start running. Robyn is part of a running team called Elite Feats and is known as an “Ultra Runner”. This is someone who runs more than 26.2 miles at once! Robyn and Sue have since become friends and Sue is now a member of the team. These great results do not stop with Sue as she now inspires others to make similar small changes in their diet to improve their own health. Robyn encourages those struggling with type II Diabetes, high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure to simply come to a class. She is confident that she can help you implement some changes in your diet and you can regain control of all of these, in many cases eliminating the need for the medicines we have

all grown accustomed to. She spoke specifically of another client who, after taking a free class with her became focused on getting off insulin for his Diabetes. He made significant changes and only 5 weeks later he was off all medication and his cholesterol and BP improved significantly as well. Now his wife attends. Robyn can also help with other common issues such as Crohn’s disease and food allergies. Although she states that you may not cure the issue, you can absolutely control it and maintain a state of remission. Robyn is also available for speaking engagements on nutrition and cooking. She can speak on these topics in general or can get very specific depending on the intended audience. Robyn lives a healthy and active lifestyle fueled by good nutrition.

Recently she ran a 70K run, which is 43 miles! She is now planning to participate in the run around Lake Ronkonkoma on June 22, which raises funds in honor of Navy Seal Lt. Michael Murphy. As if that wasn’t enough, she is going to start the run by running to it….a 50 mile run overnight from NYC to Ronkonkoma to then run four more miles around the lake. The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals. All residents pay an affordable rent and although New Ground assists them with various costs and hurdles they may face, they truly get the feeling of being a responsible homeowner.

New Ground, based in Levittown, offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.

A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social

workers provide guidance, resources and assistance to the families in various areas. The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program. Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. Students, Veterans Mark Memorial Day Memorial Day and its many traditions such as the playing of taps, the ﬂying of the American ﬂag at half-staff and the national moment of remembrance. The band, under the direction of Kristin Hodulick, and the orchestra, led by Michael Molloy, performed several patriotic tunes. Students musicians were dressed in

red, white and blue. William Colfer, from VFW Post 7763 in Massapequa Park, said Memorial Day is the most solemn day of the year for veterans because that is when they pay tribute to their comrades who lost their lives in combat. He asked the fourth and fifth grade students in attendance to remember

the sacrifices that many people have made in the name of freedom. Assistant to the Superintendent Diana Haanraadts said that the best way that children can show appreciation to veterans is to become good citizens. She called on them to treat everyone with kindness and respect, to lift others up

and to avoid letting their difference divide them. “That’s what it means to be an American citizen and to honor the all the people who have gone before us in the military,” she said. “Live in a way that shows that we respect what they’ve done for us.” Principal Lori Dano and Assistant Principal Dr. Kristi Gerhard reminded

students that Memorial Day is not about barbecue and a day off from school, but a chance to pay tribute to the people who have defended their country. “These are the people who have fought to keep us safe and free,” Dr. Gerhard said. “These are the people who have lost friends in wars. We will respect them.”
