SWIMMERS RAISE THOUSANDS TO CURE HEART DISEASE - The Massapequa High School ladies swim and dive team held its annual Swim for a Cure event in April. The team chose to donate its proceeds, more than $4,400 to the American Heart Association to honor Kiani Morisi, a senior swimmer who had open heart surgery as an infant. The ladies also learned that head coach Kelly Malone’s uncle was one of the first open heart surgery patients for children, suffering from the same condition that Kiani was born with. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly
makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. June Debut For Massapequa High School’s Virtual Musical The show will go on for drama students at Massapequa High School, who will present “Little Shop of Horrors” for their annual musical production. The show includes two casts and will be presented in a virtual format. Each cast includes 14 student-actors, who will perform on the Berner Middle School stage, which is slightly larger than the high school’s stage and allows for greater social distancing. Director Katie Tauches said that the play was double cast to give additional students a chance to take part in this year’s show. Lead roles in Cast A include Joey Casali as Seymour, Annabelle
Lesser as Audrey, Daniel Siani as the dentist, Joe Corey as Mushnik and Vincent Arenella as the plant. In Cast B, lead roles are Robbie Morana as Seymour, Julia Duffy as Audrey, Ryan Wienczorkowski as the dentist, Jesse Findling as Mushnik and Makayla Menner as the plant. They began virtual rehearsals in March and have been learning lines, songs and choreography in-person since April. The show, which debuted in 1982 Off-OffBroadway and in 2003 on Broadway, is a horror rock comedy. “Little Shop of Horrors” focuses on Seymour, a florist, his man-eating plant and his love interest, Audrey. In addition to Ms.
Tauches, Danielle Coutieri serves as choreographer and Craig Coyle is the musical director. Both shows will be prerecorded and broadcast to the community in June. Cast A’s performance will be available online on Thursday, June 10 at 7 p.m., followed by Cast B’s production on Friday, June 11 at 7 p.m. Tickets will be free and posted on the district website, www. msd.k12.ny.us, close to the show dates. “I’m really happy that the district allowed us to put on a show this year,” Ms. Tauches said. “Despite all of the challenges, the students have really risen to the occasion to create an amazing performance.”

With COVID precautions motivating more people to cook and grill at home, The FASNY urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President John Farrell. “We want all residents to stay safe as we celebrate the coming summer days and consider basic grill safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow applicable social

Town Upgrades Local Ballfields Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently visited with members of the Massapequa Coast and Massapequa International Little Leagues, including Coast President Craig Garland and MILL President Chris Brooks, to unveil improvements at John Burns Park, made to help ensure safety and added use for players this spring season. Two fields at the park received significant improvements, including artificial turf replacement and patching. “These important safety upgrades help protect our
little leaguers and others who use these fields, and the manner in which the enhancements were done also protect our taxpayers,” said Supervisor Saladino. “With significant use, the fields became worn out over time. These improvements bring a facelift to the fields, thereby improving safety for players and achieving the repairs in the most cost-effective way.” Artificial turf fields have a useful life of approximately 8-10 years, however, they are less expensive than the longterm cost of maintaining natural grass and a dirt
surface. Turf fields also provide the potential for fewer cancellations as the field us able to absorb rain storms in a manner that is not possible on a dirt infield. Turf replacement must be considered when loose inlays pose tripping hazards, fibers split and shred, and when inlays are worn out. When fields experience these issues, less cushion between the athlete and stone base underneath the turf. As players fall on the field, they are at a higher risk of injury and even concussion.
Free Summer Drive-In Movie Series Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announce the return of drive-in movies this summer at various Town facilities in July and August. The ‘Movies by Moonlight’ series is once again limited to residents only on a first-come, firstserved basis. “Residents and families looking for a fun night need look no further than their backyards this summer at the Town is ready with a summer to remember,” said Supervisor Saladino.
“We’re thrilled to once again enjoy family-friendly films from the comfort of your own vehicles at our local parks and beaches. New Study Shows Transcendental Meditation Effective For Reducing Veterans’ Stress

brought on by its effects,” said Assemblyman Durso. “That’s why I am pleased to be partnering with Northwell Health and the Katz Institute for Women’s Health in offering a free virtual health and wellness series to address many of these important health topics.”
Veterans with posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) who practiced the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique showed significant reductions in symptom severity, according to a new study published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress http://doi.org/10.1002/ jts.22665. The study’s principal investigator was Mayer Bellehsen, PhD, director of the Unified Behavioral Health Center for Military Veterans and their Families in Bay Shore, Long Island and member. “ Tr a n s c e n d e n t a l Meditation is a non-traumafocused, easy-to-learn technique that was found in this study to improve PTSD symptoms, likely through the experience of physical rest,” said Dr. Bellehsen. “In contrast to commonly administered therapies for PTSD that are trauma-focused and based on a patient’s recall of past traumatic experiences, this intervention does not require extensive review of traumatic history, which some individuals find difficult to engage in. This
intervention may therefore be more tolerable for some individuals struggling with PTSD.” The randomized controlled trial assigned 40 veterans with documented PTSD to either the TM group or a “treatment as usual” control group. The TM treatment provided 16 sessions over 12 weeks, with twice-a-day daily home practice. PTSD symptom severity was assessed with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5, and patient self-report with the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5. The results showed large effect sizes, indicating a strong TM treatment impact in reducing trauma symptoms for both PTSD measures. Other facts associated with trauma, such as depression and anxiety symptoms and sleep problems, also showed a strong impact as a result of TM treatment. “This trial corroborates the findings of a large clinical trial published in The Lancet Psychiatry,” said Sanford Nidich, Ed.D., Director of the Center for Social-Emotional
Health at Maharishi International University Research Institute, and study co-investigator. “The current study further supports the effectiveness of Transcendental Meditation as a first-line treatment for PTSD in veterans. The availability of an additional evidence-based therapy will benefit veterans, both by offering them a greater range of options and by serving as an alternative treatment strategy for those who don’t want to engage in trauma-focused treatment or who aren’t responding to a previous PTSD intervention.” The authors pointed out in their research paper that TM may positively affect trauma symptom severity through the reduction of hyperarousal symptoms. Previous research has shown that the practice of TM decreases physiological responses to stressful stimuli. In addition, recent research indicates that TM may improve resilience and positive coping strategies, providing further benefit to both veterans and active military personnel.

Town To Offer Swim Program Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier recently announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will offer a swim program this summer at outdoor pools located in Syosset-Woodbury Community Park and Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa. “Get ready to dive into Oyster Bay Town pools this summer and improve your stroke,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We are proud
to offer this swim program to children that reside in the Town of Oyster Bay. Swim programs like this really bring the community together and are an integral part in the training of our young swimmers for the future.” Town of Oyster Bay residents aged 6 to 16 are eligible to register for the swim program. Workouts will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays,
from 9:30am to 10:30am beginning Wednesday, July 7th and ending on Friday, August 13th. If a session is cancelled, make-up day(s) will be attempted. Registration must be postmarked by June 30th. Councilwoman Maier stated, “Many of our young people lost the ability to jump into the pool and improve their swim skills during the pandemic due to restrictions in place at
the time. Now, with the proper safety protocols in place, we’re happy to offer this swim program and the chance for young people to exercise while improving their strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and more!” Program fees (checks or money orders only) are $35 per swimmer for season pass holders, and a $10 discount is offered for each additional swimmer in the same family.
For residents without a season pass, the program fee is $50 per swimmer. A $15 discount is offered for each additional swimmer in families without a season pass. Proof of residency/age required when registering, with TOB residents given first preference.
