Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage to the brave people who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military men and women and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans. The United States Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength. Various sources suggest the size of the United States military is somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Each of these military branches also has its own reserves. Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. On May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the south began to recognize it as well.

Before the start of each school day, a group of fifth graders gather in a second-ﬂoor classroom to tell the news at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The Birch Lane Broadcast Club produces a short program each morning that is later played in all classrooms. There about 30 students in the club, who work with their advisers, technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn and music teacher Tom Tucker. Each

morning, a group of five or six students assigned to that day’s broadcast arrive early and write the script. Each program includes weather, sports, birthdays, special announcements and a quote of the day. Students gain experience in different positions in front of the camera and behind the scenes. They also learn how to use green screen technology in selecting the background and graphics for each broadcast. Each edition of WBLE Morning News is uploaded to the school’s

YouTube channel so it can be viewed in classes and by parents. Ms. Ahearn said that while there is a template for the script, students determine the content and give their own voice to each show. Some students have even used Google Slides to create background images. “This is their broadcast,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for them to be seen as leaders in the school. Hopefully the younger children will want to do the same thing when they become fifth graders.”

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help.

From there it was only a matter of time before the word spread quickly about what was happening in Utah. Shortly after forming the first chapter in Utah, another chapter was formed in that state, then Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas. The rest is part of the B.A.C.A. history. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a

Tech Catches On

Technology is adding a new dimension to Michael Viola’s physical education classes at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. Students recently used their Chromebooks to create videos of themselves throwing and catching, which will be used to assess their skills. Mr. Viola wanted to infuse technology into the curriculum in a way in

which students remained physically active. He worked with technology learning coach Louisa Vecchione to create an activity that did just that. Sixth graders paired up and threw balls back and forth to each other. Using the Flipgrid app, one student in each pair was recorded at a time for about 20 seconds. Assessing each student’s individual skills could take

several class periods, Mr. Viola explained. Instead, the videos were created during one period, which he can watch outside of class and then provide feedback. He explained that students need to be proficient in throwing and catching for units in the physical education curriculum in seventh grade and beyond.

Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Agape Community Church Mastic, NY Agape Community Church is a non-profit organization based in Mastic. They are focused on the Long Island community and will be holding their annual Back To School Event on Saturday, August 17 from 12-5PM, where they will be giving away free school supplies and they will serve refreshments. They are already taking donations for this event and are attempting to raise additional funds and supplies this year. They understand that a lot of children may begin a new school year this upcoming fall without all the needed supplies. Agape Community Church believes community support is crucial to helping these children. Donations of any size are welcome. This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present.

Environmental Reality Check

A group of students from Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus got a first-hand look at the environmental impacts of pollution when they went out on the water with Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in early April. More than 30 members of the Helping Hands Club, a student community service organization, joined the environmental group for a spring cleanup of the Great South Bay. The day began with a 40-minute lesson at the S.P.L.A.S.H. the bay. They got to work right away, with many students saying they could not believe how much trash was on just one little island. After filling up many garbage bags, along with collecting large items such as pieces of foam and crates, the ninth graders got back on the boat and traveled to a marina to properly dispose of the trash. “I always want to help out when I can,” Colin Mushorn said. “The ocean is very important to me and it’s important to keep it clean.” Colin said he was very impressed by the passion that Operation S.P.L.A.S.H members have for their environment. Lindsey Black noted that this was her first time participating in a cleanup project of this magnitude.

She said it opened her eyes to a real problem but also showed her how people can make a positive difference. Advisers Alyssa Levine and Erin Mosier said the purpose of the trip was to educate students about how debris affects the ecosystems, how to prevent pollution and how they can make an impact in their own community. “Living in Massapequa, many students go out on boats and down to the beach, so this is a project that has a big impact on their lives as residents of the South Shore,” Ms. Mosier said. “At the end of the day, students were thankful for the experience and said that they want to become more involved with Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and cleaning up Long Island.”
