Tau Herculid Meteor Shower Viewing At State Parks The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that several Long Island State Parks will remain open during the nighttime hours for viewing of the Tau Herculid Meteor Shower on the evening of Monday, May 30 into predawn hours of Tuesday, May 31, 2022. There will be no charge and the normal star gazing permit will not be required. You must remain in the parking lot near your vehicle.
We suggest you dress appropriately for the weather and bring a chair that reclines. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand recently announced that registration for the Town’s summer swim lessons will take place online beginning Tuesday, May 31st at 9:00 am on the Town’s website at www. oysterbaytown.com/parks. Swim lessons are available at all Town pools (SyossetWoodbury Park, PlainviewOld Bethpage Park, Bethpage Community Park and Marjorie Post Park) for children ages 5 and older. “Because we live in a Town sandwiched between the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, it is extremely important that children in the Town of Oyster Bay learn how to swim,” said Councilman Hand. “Our swim lessons have been a hugely popular program for many years as children learn how to safely enjoy fun in the

The primary mission of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk), is to promote selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals. Most of their programming is devoted to revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. Despite the word Suffolk in its name, the agency operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. One such initiative is its Services for People with Developmental Disabilities program. As defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “developmental disabilities” are a group of conditions arising from an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. These conditions typically begin during a young child’s developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime. EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of services for people with developmental disabilities aimed at enhancing their quality of life. Its specially trained staff will customize a program to help maximize each person’s ability to live with independence and self-sufficiency. In addition, personalized case management helps to ensure that individuals receive the government benefits to which they are eligible. The overall offering has six components: Community Habilitation Services: Under this program, EOC of Suffolk provides individuals with support and services that focus on developing life skills and community integration.
services target higher-functioning individuals who require minimal support. Participants receive monthly subsidies to help them live a more independent life in the community. Respite Services: EOC of Suffolk provides temporary relief from the demands of caregiving, helping to reduce overall family stress. The program helps families provide uninterrupted care for their loved one with a developmental disability. Respite/Recreation: This service component provides educational, occupational and recreational activities, as well as opportunities to increase socialization skills. Services take place on-site as well as on field trips to help enrich the learning process. Self-Directed and Fiscal Intermediary Services: This program empowers individuals to exercise the maximum amount of control over the types of support and services they wish to receive. They also have a voice in the selection of providers and in how services are provided. Working with employers and funding agencies, people with developmental disabilities can engage as full citizens in communities of their choosing. EOC of Suffolk can also arrange for the services of a Fiscal Intermediary for individuals who have chosen self-direction – supplemented by administrative and billing support. There was some sad news in the community with some of our members recently as Councilman Thomas Hand lost his Mother Carolyn and Tobay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato and his wife Jennifer lost Jen’s Mother Esther and Amy Recco of Friends for Life lost her Mom Sharon as well. This all happened within days of each other and I ask all to keep the people mentioned and their families in their prayers. We all know how it feels to lose someone close and we ask all to pray for their strength at this time. Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) recently acknowledged Community Action for Social Justice (CASJ) for its work in the Massapequas’ to prevent substance use. CASJ is a not-for-profit organization that fosters improved health and quality-of-life for Long Islanders impacted by drug use, incarceration, homelessness, and chronic disease through participantcentered services and policy advocacy to reduce broader social and structural barriers.
Working together, MTAC and CASJ have collected hundreds of pounds of unwanted medications and needles/syringes at Massapequas’ biannual drug take back events. In addition, a vital part of CASJ’s work is their Opioid Overdose Prevention Program which provides free training and naloxone kits, not only at community events, but with individuals and families in the comfort and privacy of their own homes. Since 1997, MTAC works with many local, state
and national partners to prevent youth substance use and promote a healthy Massapequa. Assemblyman Durso To Hold A Free Narcan Training Event
New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso, in coordination with the Village of Massapequa Park, and the NYS Office of Addiction Services & Support (OASAS), will be holding a Free Narcan Training Event on Thursday, May 19, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Massapequa Park Village Hall. This program will be presented by a NYS OASAS opioid overdose training
specialist and will include an opiate informational presentation, overdose risk factors, recognizing and responding to an overdose, and administration of Naloxone (Narcan). Registration is required. Not only would recognizing the acclaimed musician and humanitarian generate much-needed awareness about the prevalence of food insecurity in our region, Legislator Drucker’s proposal - which is co-sponsored by the Legislature’s sevenmember Minority Caucus would also direct the County to partner with Long Island Cares and local community organizations to host an annual, three-week long food drive starting on July 16. Donations will also be accepted for Baxter’s Pet Pantry, a Long Island Cares initiative focused upon delivering emergency pet food and supplies to
struggling families. “Harry Chapin distinguished himself as a musical storyteller whose gift for capturing the human condition in song made him one of our most beloved and relatable entertainers,” Legislator Drucker said. “His talents as a musical storyteller are only eclipsed by his desire to help others and his remarkable mission to end hunger here on Long Island and around the world. I can think of no better way of celebrating his life’s work than by supporting the cause he so passionately advocated for.” “We are very grateful to Legislator Drucker for proposing that July 16th be commemorated as Harry Chapin Day in Nassau County. Long Islanders had great love and respect for the way that Harry used his celebrity statis and global platform to call for and to hunger during his lifetime,” Long Island Cares CEO Paule Pachter said. “Sadly, Harry’s lifetime ended on July 16, 1981 at the age of

When you think of him, he was inspirational - and he was inspired by love, and he was inspired by doing the right thing,” Harry’s son Josh Chapin said. “One of the last things I did in Nassau County with him was to go to the beginning of that [New York Islanders] Stanley Cup run… and I think about collective energy that is so beautiful in a sports arena and the inspiration that comes from sacrifice and working together and being greater than the sum of your parts.
