DONATIONS COLLECTED TO HELP LOCAL VETERANS - Oyster Bay Town

Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with AMVETS Post 88 to deliver goods collected throughout the month of April to local hometown heroes. This Collection Drive directly supported veterans being cared for at the Northport VA, helping to bring the comfort of home to those living there during their time of need. The Northport VA has a ‘Wish List’ of items their veterans need, and the Town’s collection drive helped to ensure that those needs are met. Supervisor Saladino commended our amazing residents for their generosity and for coming out in droves to support this incredible initiative, and help show our support of our veterans.

President’s Medal for Scholarship

Willie N. Verastegui, a recent graduate at SUNY Old Westbury and a resident of Massapequa Park, New York, has been selected for the highest student honor earned at SUNY Old Westbury, the President’s Medal for Scholarship.

“This honor can only be earned through outstanding efforts throughout an academic career here at Old Westbury, but beyond that, a demonstration of drive, determination and dedication to go far and succeed in living out the College’s mission,” said President Dr. Timothy E.

Sams.

Verastegui completed his studies in December 2022 with a degree in Health & Society after having earned a 3.97 grade point average at Old Westbury. He is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, having served as the National Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS) chapter leader of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). In pursuit of his own medical goals, he volunteered at the NYU Langone Health surgical ICU.

Massapequa Recruits Its Next Generation Of Music Makers

The father of two young children, Verastegui volunteers at a food pantry in the Bronx, and during his time there, created a class project on healthy food accessibility in lowincome communities.

The Old Westbury President’s Medal was created in 1986 to honor outstanding academic achievement among its graduating students. To be eligible, a student must be a senior, have completed a minimum of 24 credits at Old Westbury, and have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or greater.

Third graders at Unqua Elementary School are excited for the prospect of joining musical ensembles next year, and recently they got to explore their options.

Across the Massapequa School District, students can join the chorus, band and orchestra when they enter fourth grade. To help them understand their choices, Unqua held a music recruitment session on April 21.

Christopher Marson, choral director Janice Abel and orchestra teacher Alison Pearl. They were joined by fifth graders, who showcased they different instrumental options. Each played a section of “Hot Cross Buns.”

There are four string instruments that comprise the orchestra and nine instruments that make

up the elementary band, representing the brass, percussion and woodwind sections. After hearing the fifth graders play, the teachers passed the instruments around. After hearing, seeing and touching the instruments, third graders then selected their top three choices. Teachers make the final selections to ensure wellbalanced ensembles.

Bike Safety Poster Contest For Fifth Graders

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announced the return of the Town’s Bike Safety Poster Contest, held throughout National Bicycle Safety Month. The poster contest is open to all 5th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our children, and many residents have shared their concerns about bicycle safety as drivers and youngsters alike are often unsure of safe biking practices,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This poster contest was launched to begin increasing awareness of bike safety guidelines in our community, especially as we celebrate National Bike Month

this May and spend more time in the outdoors as summer approaches.”

To enter the contest, students must digitally design or draw a picture that illustrates safe bike riding. The poster should include simple language about New York State Guidelines for bike safety, which are available online at https://tinyurl. com/bikesafeny. The top three winning posters will be unveiled to the public during an official meeting of the Oyster Bay Town Board, and featured in a town-wide newsletter. Entries will also be displayed in a “Digital Art Exhibit” on the Town of Oyster Bay’s website.

“This program not only helps fifth graders become more educated on the serious issue of bike safety, it also

helps them learn more about Town government and be recognized in their hometowns,” said Councilwoman Maier.

“Last year’s contest entries were extremely creative and informative, and I look forward to seeing this year’s designs. We encourage all fifth graders to participate!”

Submissions should be made on 18” x 24” size poster paper and emailed to postercontest@ oysterbay-ny.gov. In their submission email, students are asked to please attach a highresolution photo of their poster as a PDF, JPEG, OR PNG file, as well as a completed entry form, which is available online at oysterbaytown. com/bikesafety. The submission deadline is Wednesday, May 31, 2023.

A Head-To-Toe Display Of Kindness

Kindness is in fashion year-round at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, but during the week of April 17, students and staff took the extra step.

It was kindness spirit week, featuring five different dress-up days. It kicked off with students wearing bows or ties for “Kindness ties us all together” day. They wore camouflage as a reminder that they don’t hide from kindness and exercise clothes to show that anyone can “work out” their problems with kindness.

April 20 was peace, love and kindness day, with students and staff donning tie-dye. To close out the week and share the spirit of kindness, everyone was encouraged to wear their Lockhart or Massapequa gear.

The student council, with help from fifth grade teachers, made a kindness bulletin board across from the main office with

suggested acts of kindness. Principal Dr. Yannucci noted that when people are kind on a basic level, they are also more likely to show kindness even when dealing with adversity.

Dr. Yannucci added that the objective of kindness spirit week was about fostering a school climate where everyone feels accepted and valued.

“We want to raise

awareness that every individual is unique,” Dr. Yannucci said. “Our goal is for everyone to find that they have their own place here and that they feel special and welcome.”

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. LIMEHOF, located in Stony Brook, is heavily engrossed in our local communities and o ers Long Islanders many ways to get involved.

Since 2004, their organization has Inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are now recognized in their new Stony Brook location. In addition to their large exhibition area, theater and o cial “Hall of Fame Museum”, the 8,800 square foot building is home to a beautiful performance area. They’re open Wednesdays-Sundays from 12 noon through 5pm. Admission prices are: Adult $19.50, Seniors (65+) and Veterans $17.00, Students (w/ID) $15.00. Children under 12 are free. May is here, which means that summer is right around the corner. We have Mother’s Day coming up, so we need to make sure that we thank all the mom’s out there for the sacri ces they make for us every day. Also, Memorial Day will be here shortly, and we need to remember that it is to recognize the biggest sacri ce that the men and women of our military have made so we can have barbeques, watch the air show, and enjoy a threeday weekend to kick off the summer.

We have two major events in June, our Street fair on June 4th which will ll the streets down by the train station on Broadway with vendors, food, and pony rides and a petting zoo for the kids. We will be reaching out to our local merchants on Broadway to get even more involvement from them this year. It is a fun day with great entertainment as well on the two Show-mobile Stages.

Our 75th Anniversary Gala will be June 8th at the Royal Palm, and tickets are on sale now, so make sure you sign up. We will have food, drinks, dancing, inducting our officers for the new year and great raffle prizes. It will be a fun night, so don’t miss out.

75 years is a major milestone for any business, and our goal is to make our Chamber even more valuable to our local businesses. We are upgrading our systems and website to provide more online exposure for our members. We have also created a Member Bene ts Committee to make sure that we are living up to our goal of helping our local businesses.

One of the new bene ts we have rolled out is our Welcome to the Massapequa’s Program. We have signed up 4 sponsors to purchase bags for us to ll with promotional items, coupons and gifts from our members. We have a team of volunteers who are dropping off the Welcome Baskets to the newest homeowners in the Massapequa’s so they know what a great community we have. It is a free bene t that our Gold and Platinum members get to introduce them to the newest members of our community.

At our last Networking Breakfast, we had our Town Supervisor update us on some of the programs that the Town of Oyster Bay and Nassau County are offering to help the businesses who are still recovering from COVID. To The Friends & Neighbors of The Peninsula Golf Club and Local Civic Associations,

As you may be aware, the Town of Oyster Bay is moving forward with its plan to seize the Peninsula Golf Club (PGC) by eminent domain. This plan, which the Town approved in October 2021, has been the subject of local news reports that are not entirely correct and fail to give a complete picture of the proceedings to date.

Despite the Town’s stated reasons for their action, it is hard to imagine any net bene t to the public in seizing a privately-owned golf course that is open to the general public on a non-discriminatory basis, and that is operated at private expense, to make it a publicly-owned golf course that charges higher fees to guests from our neighboring towns and counties and operates at taxpayers expense. The Town has stated that it is acting to ensure that the property remains a golf course and is not developed into residential housing, but the fact is PGC has not offered or solicited offers to sell the club, nor has PGC made any attempt to disturb the restrictive covenant with Nassau County that has been in place for over 75 years. Instead, PGC has operated the club since 1947 as a public golf course in faithful adherence to the covenant, and it rejected the two unsolicited offers to purchase the club made in 2021, including an informal indication of interest by the Town before the eminent domain proceeding began.

As noted in our counsel’s letter, PGC has offered to address the Town’s concerns by granting a “right of rst refusal” that would give the Town the options to match any serious offer to purchase the course before PGC could conclude any sale to a third party. This solution should be more than sufficient to ensure that the Town’s stated concerns are fully addressed without the time and expense of litigation to both parties.

On Monday night, May 8th, at the Massapequa High School Library, the four 500 for 500 Competition finalists and their families gathered to hear the winning essays of the contest. The 500 for 500 contest started on May 8, 2017, and was created and sponsored by Dr. Cynthia Paulis with the coordination

assistance of Mr. Paul Weber who has been with the contest since the beginning. This year the contest question was “How did Covid affect your first amendment rights and what would you do in the future to see it doesn’t happen again? All four winners received a $500 check, a pocket version of the Constitution, a

copy of the Declaration of Independence, a book by Norman Vincent Peale, The Power of Positive Thinking and an American flag in the gift bags. The winners are pictured left to right Mary Koster, Dominick Maglione, Nicholas Piatti, and Sophia Aivaliotis. Congratulations!

Massapequa Firefighters Honored For 50 Years Of Service

FIREFIGHTERS HONORED FOR 50 YEARS OF SERVICE - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Tom Hand, Assemblyman Michael Durso, and Massapequa Park Mayor Daniel Pearl recently attended the Massapequa Fire Department’s 125th Annual Installation Dinner. The officials welcomed new officers, including Chief William Monjardo, Asst. Chief Jeffrey Friedland, Asst. Chief Ryan Zimmerman, and Asst. Chief Conor McCaffrey. They also honored Michael Hanna, John Musarra, Thomas Valery, Robert Mason, and Michael Coogan for 50 years of extraordinary service to the department. Supervisor Saladino thanked these heroes for putting the lives of others above their own and recognized their outstanding service and dedication to the community.

Ames Welcomes Massapequa Alums To Career Day

Massapequa alumni, spanning more than 50 years of graduating classes, offered words of wisdom to ninth graders at the Ames Campus on April 21. The annual Alumni Career Day featured professionals who were educated locally and graduated from either Massapequa or Berner High School.

This year’s career day featured 20 speakers on five

panels. Students attended two sessions and got to hear from professionals representing a variety of careers including communications, education, finance, government, hospitality, law enforcement, medicine, real estate and sales. The speakers graduated as far back as 1965 and as recent as 2019, and represented both the

public and private sector.

This was the 16th annual career day and Principal Tania Willman noted that some speakers have been coming every year for more than a decade. She noted how well they connected with students as they offered practical advice and guidance.

“We’re continuously grateful for the time of our alumni generously give in

sharing their experiences and their journeys,” she said.

Alumni Career Day was organized by Career and Technical Education Supervisor Patricia LiVecchi, School-toCareer Coordinator Denise DeLury and business education teachers Christine Poggioli.

Students found the program very beneficial.

Giuliana Farella, who isn’t sure what career path she wants to pursue yet, said it opened her eyes to many different options. She particularly enjoyed hearing from an alumna who interns at NASA as a flight simulation developer.

Brady Gil said career day showed him how people have had different experiences in their professional lives, and also

how he can take classes in high school that would prepare him for the future. “This was a great opportunity so I can see other people’s jobs and the hard work that’s involved,” he said.

Added Emma Pflaum, “It was nice to see a variety of options and how people go on different paths in life.”

Online Registration Begins June 5th

Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites residents interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Fitness Classes, which return for the summer beginning July 5th at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Fitness classes are co-ed, open to individuals 18 years of age or older, and run for 10 weeks.

Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Cardio Kick-Boxing, Pilates, Ballroom Dancing, Yoga, and Zumba are all very popular programs that provide our residents an outlet to enjoy exercising and staying in shape, all while meeting new people. I encourage those looking for a terrific form of aerobic exercise that will help build strength and flexibility to come out and sign up for a 10-week fitness program.”

This summer, residents

can participate in a variety of fitness classes including:

Ballroom Dancing will be held on Saturdays, from 7pm to 8pm, beginning July 8th.

Cardio Kick-Boxing will be held on Thursdays, from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, beginning July 6th.

Pilates will be held on Mondays (Tone & Sculpt), from 8pm to 9pm, beginning on July 10th.

Yoga will be held on Tuesdays, from 7:00pm to 8:00pm, beginning on July 11th, and on Saturdays, from 9am to 10am, beginning on July 8th.

Zumba will be held on Mondays from 6:45pm to 7:45pm beginning July 10th and Wednesdays from 7:30pm to 8:30pm beginning July 5th.

Registration for Town of Oyster Bay residents begins online on Monday, June 5th at 5:00pm at oysterbaytown.

com/portal. You must upload proof of residency (tax or utility bill) and a valid identification card such as a driver’s license. Town residents also have the option to register in person on Wednesday, June 7th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at the TOB Hicksville Athletic Center (167 S Broadway, Hicksville). Non-residents can register online at oysterbaytown.com/portal beginning June 12th.

Class fees are $60 for residents and $70 for nonresidents. Participants must bring their own mats for yoga and pilates. The schedule is subject to change. Saladino Seeks Nominations

To Honor Local Veterans

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announce that the Town of Oyster Bay is now accepting nominations in order to honor veterans at the Town’s ‘Salute to America Celebration scheduled for Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at 7:30 pm at TOBAY Beach. Residents are invited to nominate extraordinary individuals who have made a positive difference in our veteran communities.

“The Town of Oyster Bay’s ‘Salute to America’ Celebration provides the ideal backdrop to recognize veterans and individuals who continue to actively serve in the community and advocate for issues and concerns relative to veterans. The Town is proud to recognize and honor amazing individuals who have helped to shape our communities for

the better through their continuing advocacy and exemplary community service each year,”

Supervisor Saladino said. “I hope residents will consider submitting a nomination of an individual who deserves special recognition for their continued efforts on behalf of the veteran’s community. I look forward to recognizing the efforts of outstanding individuals who have impacted the lives of our veterans in an extraordinary way yet again this year.”

Nominations are being accepted in three different categories of recognition: Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a veteran), Friend of Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a nonveteran), and Lifetime Achievement Award (awarded to a veteran or a non-veteran). All entries

must include a supporting narrative describing the nominee’s on-going veterans related activities, and all nominees must be Town residents. All nominations must be postmarked no later than Monday, June 12, 2023. Winners will be recognized as part of a special program during the ‘Salute to America’ Celebration, a patriotic evening of top flight musical talent and fireworks, which serves as a thank you to all of our veterans and active military for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each and every day as Americans.

Oyster Bay Town Awarded $500K Grant To Expand Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

In celebration of Earth Day, Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that New York State has awarded the Town of Oyster Bay over $490,000 in grant monies to expand electric vehicle charging stations in the town. The largest grant allocated for

a single Town statewide, this award recognizes the Town of Oyster Bay’s vast commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.

The funding comes as a part of the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Municipal Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Grant

Program. It will allow the Town of Oyster Bay to install 22 Level 2 charging ports and one DCFC pedestal for public use as the demand for electric cars continues to grow each year.

“Thanks to state grant funding, we will expand electric vehicle recharging stations throughout the town without using property tax dollars.

From cheaper vehicle

maintenance to zero exhaust emissions and eco-friendly production, many community benefits can be derived from supporting electric vehicles. We thank New York State for recognizing our prior efforts to offer EV stations and for awarding us these grant funds,” added Councilman Steve Labriola.

In 2019, Councilman Labriola led a quality of

life initiative to install and operate electric vehicle charging stations on Town property for public use. Since then, the Town has surveyed properties and the public to identity the best locations for installation.

Most recently, an EV charging station was constructed at the Western Waterfront in Oyster Bay.
