animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. Recently they received a phone call from the Public Safety at Eisenhower Park, who mentioned that a cat had been stuck in a tree for at least five days and no one was able to get it down. Soon after, the Guardians arrived and climbed over 75 feet to successfully bring the cat down to safety. They not only rescued the cat, but they are now continuing to take care of her the best they can. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the

How much do East Lake Elementary School students know about their school? That was the premise of a Kahoot! challenge for children who answered 20 questions in the virtual trivia contest. With schools in Massapequa and throughout the country closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenge helped students remain connected to their elementary school. For a 24-hour period beginning the morning of April 22, children could log in and test their knowledge. Students were already familiar with Kahoot!, a game-based learning platform, because teachers frequently use it as a tool for their students to review course material in a fun

and interactive way. The multiple choice and true-false questions centered on East Lake people, places and pride. Students were asked which faculty member loves giraffes (library media specialist Renee Susman), what East Lake’s motto is (“Soaring to new heights”) and which club created the new mural (Cricut club). Some questions were based upon pictures of different locations in the building. Second grader Michael Ocuto said his favorite question was the one about Freddy the rabbit, who appears every spring on a season ﬂag in the lobby, because, “I’ve known his name since kindergarten but never thought this piece of knowledge would prove useful.”

East Lake trivia was chosen as the topic so all students, kindergarten through fifth grade, could fairly compete. The nearly 200 participants were ranked based on the number of questions they answered correctly as well as speed. “Just like our students, we miss East Lake School and everyone who makes East Lake the wonderful place that it is,” Principal Thomas McKillop said. “We chose Kahoot! because we wanted to find another way to keep our students engaged during this period of distance learning. Our East Lake Kahoot trivia challenge was intended to focus on making a social connection with our East Lake Families in a fun and entertaining way.”

Many people attest that country cooking involves comfort cuisine foods that originated in the southeastern United States. Quite often such cuisine includes biscuits, gravy, fried chicken, boiled greens, and other delicious items made from simple ingredients. Corn muffins can be another staple of country cooking. Corn meal is a versatile ingredient that is the star of this simple

nurse and senior vice president of clinical services for Medline Industries, Inc. “This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since your hands are constantly in contact with your surroundings -- opening doors or dialing the phone, for example.” Two simple things can go a long way toward

ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats -keeping your hands clean and making sure you are cleaning them correctly. Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to have the greatest density of

germs. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the “webbing” in between your fingers. “Put a squirt of gel or soap in the palm of one hand and dip the fingertips of the

opposite hand into the pools before spreading over other areas, then repeat with the other hand and fingertips,” says Cooper. “It only takes a few seconds and you will be getting at where the majority of germs are.” Proper hand hygiene is one of the cornerstones in preventing the spread
