“Music is important to Massapequa, whether on campus or in the community beyond” said Director of Fine and Performing Arts Vincent Green. “After such a challenging year, being recognized for our continuing efforts will reinvigorate the students, staff and community in supporting and growing the music program.” Despite restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, music remains an important part of education in Massapequa. General music instruction at the elementary schools and small-group instrumental and vocal instruction at all levels has continued, following social distancing guidelines. In lieu of winter concerts this year, the Fine and Performing Arts Department created a virtual holiday arts gallery featuring student performances from elementary and secondary musicians. Three Massapequa High School student-musicians were selected to the 2021 New York State School Music Association’s virtual AllState festival.

The Massapequa School District has again been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the National Association for Music Merchants Foundation. This is the 13th consecutive year that Massapequa was recognized for its outstanding commitment to music education. It was one of 686 districts in the country to be named to the 2021 list.

Hope House Ministries is a non-proﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. Their mission is founded in the spirit of St. Louis de Montfort, who had a commitment to the poor and the courage to do what no one else had the courage to do. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. Hope House Ministries was founded by Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW. 41 years ago, Fr. Francis discovered hundreds of youth who were homeless, experiencing mental health issues and living with addictions and it wasn’t long before he realized that neither government nor faith communities were doing enough to meet the crisis of homelessness. He formed Hope House Ministries and it has grown into an amazing organization that has provided for the needs of over 500,000 individuals. Hope House Ministries offers

College Sports Awaits Seven Massapequa Athletes

Donning the attire of their future colleges, seven student athletes from Massapequa High School made their plans official at a signing celebration on April 22. They were joined by their parents for the special occasion, as well as Principal Barbara Lowell and Director of Physical Education, Health, Athletics and Recreation John Piropato. The group will join collegiate teams in New

York and Connecticut. From the girls soccer team, Kaitlyn Kilmeade will play for Union College, while Caroline Brucato and Amanda DeVito will both head to Mount Saint Mary College. Sean Wilde will join the cross-country team at Molloy College and Vincent Simonetti plans to run for both the track and cross-country teams at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Timothy Dolan

will play baseball for the University of Bridgeport and Lucia Gargiulo will play softball for Utica College. Ms. Lowell, in her congratulatory remarks to students, said this year’s senior athletes truly embody perseverance and resilience. She wished them well in their postChiefs careers and also thanked the parents for their commitment and dedication.

An Earth Day Commitment To Recycling Keeping the planet clean is a goal for students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, and for Earth Day they identified ways they can do their part. Kindergartners in Maureen Walsh’s class learned about recycling and why it’s important. They made a “Lend a Hand, Help the Earth” bulletin board. The

background was recycled newspapers and the border was other recycled materials including pieces of cardboard boxes, paper bags and plastic containers. The center of the display was a large blue and green image of the Earth made from their handprints. On each side was student writing, in which they identified the ways they can lend a hand to help

their planet. Students throughout the school participated in the New York State Senate Earth Day poster celebration. The theme was “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” Students were encouraged to come up with designs that emphasize the importance of recycling and waste reduction.

Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the

late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran was joined by District Attorney Madeline Singas, Nassau County Administrative Judge, the Hon. Norman St. George and others to announce that the Nassau County Courthouse at 262 Old Country Rd. in Mineola was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Planned by the federal Public Works Administration as a Depression-era infrastructure project between 1938 and 1940, the Nassau County Courthouse has been the centerpiece of the Nassau County Court campus for 80 years. “It gives me great pride that this incredible structure has earned its place on the list of historic places and I thank Dan Looney, deputy executive assistant district attorney for his decades of diligent research that led to this recognition,” said County Executive Curran. “Justice requires constant maintenance, so do her courthouses – and this recognition not only highlights this historic gem but could lead to funding that will help preserve its history for another 80 years to come.” “When the Nassau County Courthouse was constructed in 1940 it was regal, state of the art and created a sense of civic pride,” District Attorney Singas said. “Today, it’s our turn to bring this building back to its majestic beginnings. Thanks to the National Historic Register designation, we’ll now be able to receive funds to

restore the courthouse and preserve a piece of Nassau County history.” “We are delighted that our Nassau County Courthouse is being listed on the New York State and National Register of Historic Places. Not only is it an amazing building with incredible architecture, it is a vital Courthouse in Nassau County. Judges, Court Staff, attorneys and the public utilize the building daily for the adjudication of felony criminal cases. Judge St. George noted that it is fitting that the inscription on the West Side of the Building reads “Justice is God’s Idea, but Man’s Ideal”. Everyone who enters the Courthouse commits themselves to the pursuit of Justice for the citizens of Nassau County,” stated the Hon. Norman St. George. The effort to have the courthouse listed in the Registry was spearheaded by Daniel G. Looney, deputy executive assistant district attorney. With the court’s original records, blueprints and transcripts burnt in a fire at Mitchel Field in 1974, it took almost three decades and a 62-page application, documenting the architecture, history to earn the recognition. Theodore Roosevelt in 1900 laid the cornerstone for the county’s first courthouse at Old Country Rd. and Franklin Avenue. It was expanded in 1911 and 1926 and renovated later, but by the late 1930s Nassau had grown – and outgrown the initial courts.

In 1938 Lawrence Lincoln, Lawrence J. Lincoln, a local resident who had worked at Henry Bacon’s architectural firm on the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., designed the complex. The influence of the Lincoln Memorial is present in the building’s design - the courthouse’s tall columns, lofty ceilings, lanterns, and sunlit rotunda mirror the memorial’s design. And the tripod entrance of the courthouse is a miniature of its counterpart in Washington. The project, constructed by P.J. Carlin Construction, cost $2.65 million and provided jobs for around 600 workers. “While buildings’ design matters, a courthouse in the end is about people – and the construction recognizes that,” said Curran. Albert Stewart’s panels show figures representing law, equity, charity, family, labor, construction, the marketplace, factory work and the elderly. The main building has words carved in stone, saying “Let us cherish justice that serves no master” and “Justice is god’s idea – man’s ‘ideal.’” The courthouse joins other Nassau sites on the register, including the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Historic District, The East Willison Village Historic District, First Presbyterian Church of Oyster Bay and Hempstead Town Hall. The LIRR station in Farmingdale is another way to travel through time.

We ask residents to follow the advice of health professionals and keep their family safe by socially distancing from others while at the beach and by utilizing face coverings if you’re unable to keep a safe distance from others.” Beach parking stickers will be on sale daily beginning May 8th, from 10am to 2pm, at TOBAY Beach, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing and at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa. Beginning May 29th, sticker sales will also be available at Philip B. Healey Beach at Florence Avenue in Massapequa, Centre Island Beach, Stehli Beach in Bayville, and at Ransom Beach in Bayville. To purchase a beach parking sticker for your vehicle,

residents must present their vehicle registration and bring the vehicle they plan to drive to the beach since parking stickers are placed on the vehicle at the time of purchase. Only residents may purchase beach parking stickers for Town of Oyster Bay beaches. Seasonal parking stickers are $60, which pay for themselves following three visits. Free beach parking is offered to Town of Oyster Bay senior citizens aged 60+, the disabled and those on social security disability. To protect your health and safety during this COVID-19 pandemic, senior citizens and the disabled will simply be asked to show their driver’s license and registration from behind the window when visiting the beach for the first time this season. A parking sticker will then be adhered to the vehicle to ensure continued free

access upon future arrival through the established Express Lane. If seniors or those with disabilities choose to visit the beach in another vehicle, they must simply present their Driver’s License or Beach ID Card from behind the window and will then receive a free day pass. Town of Oyster Bay volunteer firefighters, members of the Armed Forces, veterans and electric port vehicle owners qualify for beach parking passes at reduced rates. Beaches are staffed with lifeguards and parking attendants on weekends only beginning Saturday, May 29th, and then daily beginning June 25th through Labor Day. The Oyster Bay Town Board has restricted beach access to residents only and enhanced safety measures by installing signage and pedestrian barriers.
