Massapequa High School will host 5Alive, a benefit concert, on Saturday, May 5th. All proceeds will support the Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop Hospital. The event is being organized by Team ECHO, the school’s Environmental Consciousness at Home club under the direction of adviser Robert Hempel. It begins at 5 p.m. with food from Taco Joe’s and All American Hamburger in addition to candy from Five Below, a live band and raffles. The concert starts at 7 p.m. in the auditorium featuring five decades of pop-rock music performed by Massapequa High School musicians and professional singer and songwriter Ed Ryan. Admission is a $5 donation to the Cancer Center.

Saladino recently visited Birch Lane Elementary School in Massapequa where he met with a second grade class, and planted a cherry blossom tree in celebration of Earth Day. In addition to planting the tree, Supervisor Saladino, along with Massapequa Park Mayor and the Town’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Works Jeffrey Pravato, took time to meet with the students and explain to them the importance that recycling plays in protecting the Earth and our environment, and how the Town is leading the way through the new single stream recycling program.

When the Pennies for Patients campaign was finished, that loose changed totaled $1,540. The school presented a check in that amount to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on April 24th. Campaign manager Kerri Stein accepted the donation and thanked the students for their efforts. She gave the school a gold pennant. “With a small amount of change, when we all work together, we can make a big change,” she said. Ms. Stein explained that the money would help people across the country who are battling blood cancers. It will fund medical treatment, research for new medications, and comfort items for patients such as toys and blankets.

I’ve known many people with an aversion to this perceived “unlucky” number, whether serving as a date of particular significance or - the more common superstition - when it should happen to fall on a Friday, of all days. Personally, I’ve taken special care to note any particularly negative occurrences on these infrequent juxtapositions of day and date, with thankfully few to report. Just another day, as they say. And with that, today - May 2nd - I commemorate the 13th anniversary of my start date here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Over one dozen years ago, I began my journey into the world of journalism, straight from college. At the time, thirteen years would have certainly seemed like an eternity to spend in any one establishment. Think about

it - even school, which often seems like an infinite chunk of time, is divided into segments of elementary, junior high and senior high. College, if it follows, is usually segmented into four-year intervals. Thirteen years… well that’s an entirely different level of commitment, is it not? And yet, even in the workforce, time tends to separate into stages. It begins with the formative years of finding your footing in a particular field, still unsure of what the job entails and what your responsibilities will include. Everything is new and exciting as you realize - hey, I’m really doing this! These are followed by the years of transition, when positions may be altered, new projects will come and go, and you begin to discover your particular strengths and weaknesses en route to finding your true passion. Thirteen years in, and I

am still in the process of realizing those aspects of the vast field of journalism which really inspire me. I am open to learn, eager to explore and always looking to improve upon those skills I originally honed all those decades ago. I believe this process is never complete; those who have worked in a particular field for twice as long as I have can surely attest to this fact. Who’s to say that anyone has to stay with one particular venture for a lifetime anyway? The world is constantly evolving, as are we; and the nature of most careers tends to necessitate a versatility that didn’t always exist prior. We all have untapped skills to be utilized, curiosities to indulge and talents to cultivate. So, here’s to 13, a number like any other, if you ask me. May it signify all the experience gained thus far, and the adventures yet to unfold.

It all started with a good book... As I sat down with Lisa Gatti, CEO & Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., I had the privilege to learn about what her organization does to help those in need, as well as how it all began. PalO-Mine Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. Lisa grew up knowing she loved horses, but she really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written about: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-ofthe-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. If you are someone who faces any sort of disability or an emotional or vulnerable problem, please visit their website to learn more about how they can help you - and don’t hesitate to get help! Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual Day at the Races, which will be on June 8th at the Belmont Race Track. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, Par Fore the Horse, will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, a cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). Lastly, Pal-O-Mine features a Wish List on their website, which lists items they use every day that you can donate! EARTH DAY CLEANUP - Troop 2028 of Massapequa participated in the Earth Day Clean-Up at Brady Park.

Massapequa High School students became teachers for the day as they visited East Lake Elementary School second-graders on April 18th to talk about communities and financial literacy. The Junior Achievement High School Heroes program is a servicelearning project with interactive lessons on community decisionmaking, entrepreneurship, banking and taxation, and giving high school students an opportunity to serve as role models for younger

peers. The second-graders, who study communities as part of their social studies curriculum, learned how different professions exist within a community to create a local economy and support system. High school students led their younger peers in a variety of handson activities. In a lesson that taught them about assembly line versus unit production, the secondgraders worked in groups to make paper doughnuts. They had to create as many as they could in three

minutes, without defects, to sell. The high school students were trained by Denise DeLury, the district’s school to career coordinator, and Lorraine Englander, a program manager with Junior Achievement. Ms. DeLury said that many of the participating students are interested in careers in education and High School Heroes gave them an opportunity to practice lesson planning and classroom management.

Making Digital Music Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District welcomed composer and producer Brent Daniels during the week of April 16th-20th. Through a partnership with the PTA’s Arts in Education committee, he worked with students

in Janice Abel’s general music classes in teaching them how to create digital music. Mr. Daniels taught students about musical concepts such as loop and sequence, then invited students to record various sounds and phrases.

Building Community

He used his electronic keyboard to alter those sounds and used them to create an original song for each class. At the end of each session, Mr. Daniels reminded students about the importance of getting a good education.

Tree Planting he was a student at Birch Lane, a tree was planted to mark the very first Earth Day in 1970. He joined Janine Signorile’s secondgrade class in the courtyard on April 20th to admire the new pink flowering tree and cover the roots with dirt so it will be a fixture at the school for a long time. Students learned that trees

are important because they produce oxygen for humans and animals. Supervisor Saladino and Village of Massapequa Park Mayor Jeffrey Pravato also talked with students about the importance of recycling, and showed the items that can be recycled including metal, plastics, newspapers and cardboard.

THE NEXT LEVEL - Four student-athletes from Massapequa High School have committed to playing at the collegiate level. They signed their national letters of intent during a ceremony on April 20th. The high school students then visited Ames health classes for follow-up discussions. For one activity, an Ames student had to rip up a piece of paper as their peers shouted out insults. Then, when they shouted out compliments, the student had to try and put the piece of paper back to

together. The purpose was to show them the damage that bullying and namecalling can do to a person. Denise Baldinger, the district’s health chairwoman, said that the purpose of the collaborative program was to show the ninth-graders that there are ways to get help if they are dealing with any of these issues. Hearing it from their own peers, she said, is an effective way to get the message across.
