Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens summer activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers throughout the Town. To continue fostering a positive school climate and culture, McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District held its first Character Building Week from March 25-29. Each day had a different theme, including Positive Monday, Superhero Tuesday, Feel Good Wednesday, Mindful Thursday and Teamwork Friday. There were schoolwide activities that built camaraderie among students and staff. Students wrote positive messages on paper links, which were turned into chains and hung
throughout the school. For the compliment tree, each child was asked to write a nice message about a classmate on a leaf-shaped piece of paper. The Junior Chiefs Helping Hands club created the “McKenna Says” board with messages of encouragement and kindness. To foster collaboration, first-grade students partnered with their fifth-grade buddies to make posters about teamwork. Throughout the week, students were asked to wear clothing that matched the theme such as shirts with positive messages, superhero shirts

There were also songs tied to the daily theme like “We’re All in This Together” for Teamwork Friday. “Each day had a different way for students to view themselves, with the goal of having a more positive outlook,” Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said. “There was just a positive vibe the whole week, and the students became more conscientious how they speak and the decisions they are making.”

( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Even When You Think You Can’t “It is your decisions, and not your conditions, that determine your destiny.” - Tony Robbins This morning I was speaking to someone very important in my life and I expressed that I felt as though something was holding me down, making me feel heavy and sad. Yes, I was feeling a bit depressed today. I’ve never been completely comfortable baring my soul to people in my life, instead feeling more at home in the position of helper as opposed to helpee. When, I myself, am struggling, I will rarely venture to confide in someone, and when I do, I expect a lot of the typical platitudes and that’s okay. I know that just because someone loves you, it doesn’t mean they are always going to have just the right words at just the right time. That’s been my job (literally). But I have to say, this one shocked and amazed me. I’ll never doubt the value of a good heart to heart pep talk again. I think I said, “I can’t do my column today, I just can’t. I’m feeling too down in the dumps
(yes, it happens). I thought I was going to be fully supported in throwing in the towel for the week. If I’m being honest, that is what I thought I wanted. Instead, he said to me, “Do you know why I wake up at 4 AM each morning to go to the gym before I start my day?” I was tempted to say, “Um, because you’re crazy?” I get up at 6 AM, and as you all know, 6 AM to 7 AM is my sacred morning hour, but 4 AM would never happen. A girl needs her sleep! My friend continued, “I get up at 4 AM each day to go to the gym and purposely lift weight that drags me down and offers me resistance so that I can overcome that resistance, lift myself back up and build more muscle.” I knew he was a workout devotee, but I must admit, I never thought of it as a metaphor for life. And to think I’ve watched every Rocky movie ever made. I’ve had plenty of moments in my life where things were so smooth and I was so ridiculously blessed that being happy, enthusiastic and inspired was a no-brainer. What I have humbly
come to realize is that when you preach from a privileged soapbox, you can only reach so far. Yes, the last several months have been filled with some interesting ups and downs and some things that haven’t felt so pleasant. They have also been filled with massive growth and perspective, and yes, I have been developing a lot of new muscles. I was not let off the hook this morning. The beautiful thing is that not having to write was what I wanted, but not what I needed in order to grow. I needed to be stretched past my comfort zone today, lovingly yet firmly. We all fall into that trap at times, where we are looking for excuses to be less than great. At that moment this morning, someone loved me enough to remind me that although my reason to not want to write this particular column was valid, it would not take me where I needed, and ultimately wanted, to go. Pushing past some temporary discomfort to get the job done would.

to learn music, the presence of highly qualified music teachers, adherence to state and national standards, types of musical experiences offered and opportunities for performance and competition. The district offers general music instruction beginning in kindergarten and students learn to play the recorder in third grade. Upon entering fourth grade, children can select an instrument to play in the band or orchestra through high school, and also join the chorus. Concerts throughout the year allow students to share their talents with their classmates, families and community members. Extracurricular
opportunities include after-school ensembles and various musical theater productions, while the Summer Fine Arts program allows for yearround music instruction. During the 2018-19 school year, more than 100 student musicians from the elementary, middle and high school levels were selected to the 2019 All-County Music Festival, hosted by the Nassau Music Educators Association. Thirteen students were chosen for Long Island String Festival Association ensembles and six Massapequa High School vocalists represented the district at the 2019 AllEastern Honors Ensemble sponsored by NMEA.

Denise DeLury, the district’s school-to-career coordinator, said this is the 12th year that Massapequa has offered the Junior Achievement program. She said skills emphasized through the curriculum include creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, decision-making, idea development, Making choices, map reading, problem-solving and speaking and listening. Interested high school
students can sign up for the program, and many who do are considering careers in education. Students attend a training session after school with Ms. DeLury and a representative from Junior Achievement to learn about classroom management, questioning techniques and lesson planning. Junior Achievement provides the kits with the resources for five different lessons. “The high school students get a chance to see what the teaching profession is all about from planning to instruction to classroom management,” Ms. DeLury said. “It helps them to determine if this is a career they would like pursue. Many of the students sign up to teach in their former elementary school and some of them in their former teacher’s classroom. It is a wonderful program.”

During a recent lesson on community in secondgrade classrooms at Unqua Elementary School, it was fitting that Massapequa High School students served as the instructors. The High School Heroes program, through Junior Achievement, focused on a variety of concepts relating to local and global communities such as business and careers, finances, government, innovation and voting. The second graders participated in numerous hands-on activities. They learned about the production of goods by opening up a doughnut shop and forming an assembly line to make their product. Teams competed to see who could put the most doughnut stickers together. In making a decision tree, students had $500 in
