Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Tom Hand, and Massapequa Park Mayor Jeff Pravato today announced the designation of parking spots in Town-owned parking lots specifically reserved for Combat Wounded Veterans. The first lot to feature such a designation will be lot M-9, located on New York Avenue in Massapequa, adjacent to the Massapequa Chapter of the Marine Corps League, numerous local businesses and within walking distance of the Massapequa train station. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces dedicate their lives to protecting our freedoms and way of life. Many veterans continue to struggle daily with injuries and the designation of special

Combat Wounded Veteran Parking in Town lots is just one of many ways in which we can make their lives easier while recognizing their sacrifice and service for our nation.” Reserved Combat Wounded Veteran parking spots are a symbolic gesture and currently designated in Town parks, with plans to expand this initiative across multiple Town lots, with this designation in Massapequa being the first step. The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to assist veterans through the Division of Veterans Services. The Town has been designated a “Purple Heart Town,” which recognizes the Town’s commitment to honoring veterans who have been wounded or have made the supreme sacrifice while in service to the nation. “Statistics indicates that an estimated 1.8 million

Diploma Awarded The Massapequa School District Board of Education awarded a high school diploma to Vietnam War veteran Michael John Brigante Jr. at its meeting on April 12th. The New York State Education Department’s Operation Recognition program allows school districts to award diplomas to veterans who actively served in the military

during the World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War eras. Mr. Brigante, a Massapequa resident for more than 40 years, served active duty in the Army in 1961, and remained in the Army National Guard until 1966. With his family in attendance, Mr. Brigante was presented with his Massapequa High School diploma by

In the past, the groundwater beneath Long Island provided some of the finest drinking water in the world. Now, each year brings more news about the condition of Long Island’s groundwater, and not much of it is good. The 2018 Protect Our Aquifer Day programs in Suffolk on Thursday, May 3rd and in Nassau on Friday, May 4th from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. are the opportunity to hear experts discuss the science of Long Island groundwater, and legal approaches to provide more protection and oversight of the water supply on which Long Island relies. The Suffolk, May 3rd, program will be held at Longwood Public Library, 800 Middle County Road, Middle Island. Of Weddings & Wandering Just last weekend, I was able to satisfy my urge for a little springtime strolling in the city when the opportunity arose to accompany a friend from college to several New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. While I was initially far more interested in the aimless wandering aspect of the day, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the experience of attending these avant-garde displays. Never having heard of the featured designers prior to seeing their latest collections in person, they proved to be quite impressive. Sure, I could have done without the crowns of ﬂowers as accent, and I’m fairly certain I will not be accessorizing any future bridal gowns with high-top sneakers; but, quirks aside, some of the styles were quite stunning when viewed more as works of art rather than practical fashion. At the close of one of the shows, the audience was caught

off guard by an impromptu wedding proposal, orchestrated by the boyfriend of one of the featured models. As she stood aghast, he expressed his love and desire to spend the rest of his life with the woman before him, saying he could think of no more appropriate venue to pop the question than on a runway in the midst of bridal week. Judging by the standing ovation delivered by the crowd - among them, the family of the blushing bride-to-be - it seemed he couldn’t have picked a more opportune moment, one they will surely treasure forever. Bridal business aside, we managed to squeeze in some sightseeing on what happened to be one of the warmest days we have been graced with so far this season. From the Flatiron District over to the West Village, we traversed a solid six miles or so of the downtown area, taking in the nuances of each neighborhood and - of

course - finding time to snap some photos along the way. It was during an ill-fated “selfie” attempt in front of the Flatiron Building that a kind woman took pity on us and offered to take the photo, saying, “I know it’s probably taboo to walk up to random strangers and volunteer to take their picture, but you two seemed like you could use a little help.” Why yes, we could indeed. Score one for acts of kindness from fellow tourists. In all, it was a day short on the sort of haphazard adventure which has become the norm with most New York City day trips I have ventured on; actually, quite seamless. It’s funny, the tendency to almost miss the chaos when things go according to plan. I’ll have to remind myself of that irony the next time I’m traipsing 50 blocks out of the way to make a reservation at the third restaurant on the list, while carrying my shoes.

Summer is fast approaching and the Hamptons are the place to be this event season. An event that will once again stand out this summer is the American Heart Association’s 22nd annual Hamptons Heart Ball. This incredibly anticipated event will be taking place at the Southampton Arts Center in Southampton, on Saturday, June 23rd. This year, the Heart Ball will honor Audrey & Martin Gruss, of The Audrey and Martin Gruss Foundation and Dr. Apostolos K. Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a

difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. Soldier Collection Drive Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone today announced that the Town of Oyster Bay is participating in a 2018 Soldier Collection Drive in an effort to gather needed supplies to be sent to the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces serving around the globe. The drive will take place Tuesday, May 1st through Friday, July 6th. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to support

According to a 2014 study by Pew Research Center, 59 percent of seniors regularly use the internet — a 6 percent increase from the previous study conducted in 2012. Today, 67 percent of adults age 65 and older say they go online. Pew also says that, although seniors consistently have lower rates of technology adoption than the general public, four in 10 seniors now own smartphones, which is more than double the amount that did in 2013. Seniors in Australia are especially tech savvy, as Deloitte’s mobile consumer survey found 78 percent of Australian seniors aged 65 to 75 own a smartphone, up from 69 percent in 2016. While stereotypes have long painted seniors as technologically inept, seniors are actually more socially and digitally

engaged than ever before. Seniors use technology in many different ways. Some use mobile apps to manage medications and doctor’s appointments and monitor their ﬁtness regimens. Some families employ 24/7 alert systems or smarthome technology to keep seniors comfortable and safe at home for as long as possible. Noninvasive, “smart” technology can analyze factors such as whether or not doors are left open, if there has been movement in a home or whether appliances/lights are on or off. This represents a great way for families to stay informed and provide assistance even if they are not nearby. SilverSurfers, a senior-based information website, says other tech that seniors are embracing includes online dating; audio and digital books; online shopping, which is especially valuable to seniors who have mobility issues; and social media, which can keep seniors connected to others and feeling less lonely. A study conducted by researchers from the University of California, San Francisco found 18 percent of American seniors live alone, and 43 percent report feeling lonely on a regular basis. Loneliness can increase death risk. Social media and internet connectivity can be an important tool in helping seniors feel like active members of society. Technology is no longer just for teenagers or active workers. Seniors are increasingly embracing technology and becoming a fast-growing demographic for tech usage.

Alumni Advice More than 40 graduates of the Massapequa School District gave advice to the future workforce during the 11th annual Alumni Career Day at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus on April 13th. The graduates came from as far back as the Class of 1963 and as recent as the Class of 2011, representing both Massapequa and Berner high schools. They spoke about careers in business and finance, the medical profession, communications, education, technology, the culinary arts and more. Speakers told the ninthgraders what they need to do in high school to set themselves up for future success. “At this age, you’re often very undecided

about your future, so it’s very important to have something or someone to connect to,” said guidance counselor Kath Balcuk, who organized career day along with business teacher Christine Poggioli. “The students can put themselves in the shoes of someone who also walked through this district.” This year’s keynote speaker was neurosurgeon Dr. Mark Testaiuti, a 1981 Massapequa High School graduate. After he spoke to the entire ninth grade, students attended breakout sessions with the presenters who each shared his or her journey from Massapequa student to professional. “I liked how there were people from a lot of different careers,” student

Samantha Otranto said. “We’re in our first year of high school, so we need to start thinking about our futures soon.” Students said they received great advice from the speakers that could be applicable in any career such as the importance of time management and communication skills. Joey Casali said he learned that while it’s good to have career goals, it is equally important to have options. That starts with exploring different interests in high school. Jackie Romeo added that colleges don’t just look for students with good grades, but want to see someone who is wellrounded with a resume full of extracurricular and community service activities.

Massapequa High School’s robotics team can now add a national championship to its list of accomplishments. Students competed in the CREATE U.S. Open Robotics Championship in Council Bluffs, Iowa from April 2nd-7th. The Robo Chiefs were tournament champions in the Open Division along with Beijing Bayi High School from Beijing, China and DC West Community Schools in Valley, Nebraska. Massapequa was part of a three-team alliance, in which two robots from the group compete in a given match against a pair of robots from another alliance. Competing team members included seniors Victoria Bal, Emily Clugston, Dana Colletti, Evan Donohue, Billy Dougherty, Jessica Monaghan and Alex Schmadtke, under the direction of robotics team advisers Matthew Swanson and Brian Vanek. The students spent several months working after school to build and perfect their robot, repeatedly

testing it in the practice ring across from the robotics classroom. During the competition, they had to move mobile goals, which look like cones, into point zones and stack smaller cones on top. “It was really a fun experience, how people from all different areas can come together for a friendly competition,” Billy said. “Our robot performed well and it was a really great way for us to end our time in the robotics club.” Added Victoria of the competition, “You see so many different ideas. It’s cool to see how everyone can approach the same goal in a different way.” Alex and Billy operated the controls during the tournament. They explained that there were a lot of mechanisms that all had to work simultaneously on the robot, making it a very challenging task. Members of the robotics team say several of the courses they have taken in high school were beneficial including robotics, principles of engineering, automotive maintenance, computer aided design and

introduction to JavaScript. Success in the competition required strong knowledge in both constructing and programming their robot. Dana explained that she had to write several hundred lines of code. The Robo Chiefs qualified for the national competition because of its performance at the Vex Robotics zone regional qualifier at Adelphi University in January. They also participated in competitions throughout the season at Farmingdale High School, Freeport High School, East Rockaway High School and The Harvey School in Katonah. At the Vex regional qualifier at East Rockaway, the Robo Chiefs received the Excellence Award, which is given to the top overall team recognizing robot performance and design, teamwork and professionalism. Mr. Swanson and Mr. Vanek said that the national championship is a testament to the hard work and preparation of the students.

Fourteen individuals and one organization, all of whom have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County, received the award during an official ceremony held at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s twelfth annual gala. During the past 12 years, more than 100 individuals have been honored with this prestigious award, which recognizes those who have had a profound effect on public education. A strategic education partner with local school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the award to pay tribute to those who share its commitment to enabling students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. The Education Partner Awards program recognizes individuals from all walks of life. To the Letter Fifth-graders are taking the artistic skills they have been developing for years and creating special projects at East Lake Elementary School in Massapequa School District. Each student is making an autobiographical architectural letter, a customized threedimensional piece. “This is the culminating activity of everything they learned in art in

elementary school,” said art teacher Patti Krakoff. “They are creating artwork that tells their individual stories.” Each student begins by cutting out the first letter of his or her first name from a piece of chipboard, twice. Plastic cups go between the two cutouts to make the 3-D sculpture. From there, it is up to each child how to decorate the blank canvas to reﬂect his or her personality. Ms.

Krakoff said some students are choosing to use paint while others will be using photos and objects to make a collage. The students will be working on their pieces for several weeks, and will get to take it home at the end as a keepsake. Ms. Krakoff said they are following artist “habits of mind” as they develop their craft, envision and imagine, then create, observe and reﬂect.

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District took part in the Puzzle Piece Campaign in April. During library classes, each student identified six positive character traits that make he or she

unique, and wrote it on a blue paper puzzle piece. The pieces were then hung on a bulletin board in the hallways representing students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The puzzle piece is the symbol used to reﬂect the mystery and complexity of autism spectrum disorder.

Library media specialists Jacqueline Lee and Claire Mitchell also read books about acceptance to the students with a different selection for each grade, such as “Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon” for fourthgraders.
