Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park), in coordination with Long Island Cares and Baxter’s Pet Pantry, is inviting the local community to participate in his annual Pet Food Drive that runs through Thursday, May 12, 2022 to help more pets stay out of shelters and remain at home with their families-where they belong. Assemblyman Durso is asking residents and community organizations to kindly donate unopened bags of dog and cat food, canned food, pet supplies, and food for other domestic animals such as hamsters, fish, and birds. All items collected will be donated to Baxter’s Pet Pantry, operated by Long Island Cares, which provides free

pet food and pet supplies to pet-owning families in need throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. “Pets bring us so much happiness and unconditional love to our lives. However, for families on a tight budget or those experiencing food insecurity, it is difficult to afford these added expenses,” said Durso. “Our pet food drive is helping keep our pets safe, healthy, and home with their owners. Parents and residents are invited to Massapequa Takes Action Coalition’s (MTAC) VIRTUAL Town Hall discussion on Monday, April 25, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. regarding what matters most in protecting our youth’s mental health. According to The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory: Protecting Youth Mental Health, mental health challenges in children, adolescents, and young adults are real and widespread. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health challenges were the leading cause of disability and poor life outcomes in young people, with up to 1 in 5 children ages 3 to 17 in the U.S. having a mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder. Since the pandemic began, rates of psychological distress among young people, including symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders, have increased.

MTAC’s Virtual Town Hall discussion, led by Kathleen Coletta, LCSW-R, looks to identify the keys to developing and maintaining optimum mental health for both parents and children with a focus on understanding the strong connection of parental mental health to our children’s mental health. Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, announce the performer line-up for the much-anticipated 18th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, taking place on Saturday, May 28, 2022 and Sunday, May 29, 2022, from 10 AM – 3 PM. Returning for their 9th headlining performance, with two native New Yorkers on the jet team, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels return to Long Island following the cancellation of their last scheduled performance in 2020, due to Covid. Military performers joining the Blue Angels are the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, which will be making their 16th appearance at the Bethpage Air Show; the Air Combat Command

F-22 Raptor; the U.S. Navy F-35C Tac Demonstration Team; the U.S. Coast Guard; and the 106th Rescue Wing NY Air National Guard HC - 130 / HH 60 Demonstration Team. Civilian performers include the world-famous Skytypers and their ﬂight squadron of five vintage WWII aircraft; Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot; Jessy Panzer, a highly recognized female aerobatic pilot making her second Bethpage Air Show appearance; the American Air Power Museum Warbirds; Long Island’s own David Windmiller; and the SUNY Farmingdale State College Flying Rams, who will ﬂy several of their 22 college-owned aircraft. “This year’s highly anticipated show is going to be spectacular! Massapequa High School Students Get A Taste Of Teaching

Massapequa High School students became the teachers, visiting all six elementary schools in the district in March and April for the High School Heroes program. They met with second graders for lessons on careers, community, government and finance. The program, sponsored by Junior Achievement, includes several real-world simulations led by the high school students. Second graders are assigned different jobs and learn how every one of those roles is vital to a community’s success. They also study production methods by pretending to open up a donut shop, and using stickers representing different ingredients to make their product. For a

lesson on voting, students choose a desired community service project. More than 70 high school students participated in the program this year, which is overseen by School-toCareer Coordinator Denise DeLury. High School Heroes has been a staple in Massapequa for more than 15 years, although this was the first time it was held in-person since 2019. Ms. DeLury noted that the high school “teachers” once participated in the program themselves as second graders. “I thought it would be nice to teach other kids,” said junior Estefani SalasReyes, who got to work with her brother’s class at Unqua Elementary School.

Sophomore Bridget Rail aspires to be a therapist and signed up for the High School Heroes program to gain some experience working directly with children. She found value in the interaction with her younger peers. Each session was almost a full day and every class had three or four students from the high school serving as teachers. Before they stepped into the elementary classrooms, they attended training sessions with Junior Achievement to understand the lessons and explore the resources they would be using to teach. Each second grade student was provided with a workbook and received a competition certificate at the end.

Town Crews Demolish Abandoned Squatter Zombie Home

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with local neighbors and the Town’s Highway crew to commence the demolition of a long-dilapidated zombie home on Alhambra Road in Massapequa. This longtime eyesore was recently court-granted for demolition following multiple complaints from local neighbors. “This property has been inspected by our workforce several times, with multiple violations cited for lack of maintenance,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Town personnel repeatedly found deplorable conditions as this property showed clear signs of neglect. Unfortunately, the property owner did not fulfil any opportunities to clean it up

but fortunately, our Quality of Life Taskforce stepped in to help our residents.” Town inspections discovered a variety of code violations, including overgrown vegetation, deterioration or even lack of walls, debris strewn throughout both indoors and outside, damaged or missing ceilings, and overall deterioration. While the condition of the property worsened over time, the Town continued all efforts to keep the property safe to the surrounding neighborhood while pursuing legal action. “The great success of our Task Force really speaks for itself, as we’ve now successfully demolished more than two dozen homes since its inception,”

Supervisor Saladino added. “Through the diligence of our Town team – our building and legal professionals – we were successful in receiving the court’s go-ahead to proceed with demolition of this property.” The Town Code Enforcement Bureau of the Department of Planning and Development is charged with the enforcement of all codes, rules and regulations pertaining to zoning, housing and public safety. It is expressly designed to handle requests of citizens regarding possible violations. L.I.’s Largest Supply Of Ukrainian Humanitarian Relief Items Shipped To Poland Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board loaded the last boxes filled with donations from generous Town residents to be shipped overseas to assist the people of Ukraine. In mid-March, the Town initiated a collection drive at various Town facilities, where residents could drop off much-needed supplies including medical items, personal hygiene products and non-perishable food in an effort to help the crisis abroad. Over 7,000lbs – the largest collection on Long Island – of supplies were collected by the Town. “We all watch in horror as we witness the faces of innocent women, children and men impacted by war,”

said Supervisor Saladino. “As the unimaginable continues to unfold overseas, we stand united here at home. The overwhelming generosity of our residents has been nothing short of amazing. This Humanitarian Relief Drive is resulting in muchneeded supplies being delivered to innocent victims of Russia’s aggression. God bless the people of Ukraine and everyone who donated to help them.” Town officials thanked Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello and the Nassau County Legislature for partnering in this collection initiative, and recognized Craig Probst and Brian Kuhn of
