The 15th annual event was held in the evening at Massapequa High School featuring arts and crafts, entertainment and food. A SKILL BUILDING INVESTIGATION - Fifth-graders participated in an educational fact-finding mission at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District from March 18-22. Through the Submerge Storytelling program, students studied the fictitious case of a young rocket scientist, Emmy, who was sent to Saturn to find a certain mineral. A classroom was transformed in her bedroom and with clipboards in hand, they investigated items to find valuable information to help her. During the weeklong endeavor, students learned how to draw conclusions based on evidence, in additions to enhancing their collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. A dozen aspiring journalists shared their love of writing and newsgathering as students from Massapequa High School’s student newspaper visited fifth-graders at Unqua Elementary School on March 26. Editors and reporters from The Chief hosted a two-hour writing workshop for their younger peers. They brought copies of past issues to familiarize the fifth-graders with the different parts of a newspaper or, for those used to getting their information online, with the concept of a newspaper. Of course, Chief staffers talked about their digital presence as well. The fifth-graders enthusiastically browsed through the newspapers and many found people they knew in the stories and pictures, such as older siblings, cousins and neighbors. Staffers Spreading Good News

Second-graders became the experts on a wide variety of topics, then got to share their knowledge during a Meet the Author celebration at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. As part of their nonfiction writing unit, students in Karen Ellinger’s and Stacy Labriola’s classes created

“All About” books. They could pick any topic, which included gymnastics, koalas, lacrosse, swimming and whale sharks, and had to do research. The children gathered information by reading books, finding online resources and interviewing people with knowledge of their subjects. To conclude the unit, students from the two

classes met in the allpurpose room on March 22 to share their books. As they paired off, children took turns reading to each other. Everyone left feeling like an accomplished author as their classmates, teaches and even Principal Stephen Aspetti left positive feedback on their compliment pages.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Products used to wash boat hull sand decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia. Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen. For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to surface waters. Below are a few actions you can take: 1) When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and properly disposed. 2) Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use. 3) Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products. Here are a list of a few alternatives to toxic products: Elbow Grease, Hydogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baby Oil.

They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, asside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local
