money and bettering services for residents.” In an effort to repave a greater number of streets and better maintain roadways, the Town Board’s action results in the consolidation of the Highway Department into the Department of Public Works (DPW). maintenance. By rolling the Department of Highway into DPW, the Town will not have to hire a new Commissioner for a department that no longer exists, thus providing for a savings down the line. Councilman Steve Labriola stated, “The Town Board has been focused on finding savings in every corner of our government. This departmental consolidation will allow us to achieve efficiencies, save taxpayers money and improve the delivery of services.” For more than a year, the Town has examined new ways to deal with sanitation, with the goal of creating a more efficient and streamlined process for both trash and recyclable waste. Accordingly, a standalone Department of Sanitation was also approved by the Town Board to streamline inter-related sanitation collection operations
and recycling collection programs. It replaces the division of sanitation and recycling collection that was currently part of DPW. With an eye toward cost savings and best protecting Mother Earth, this department will have jurisdiction over the Solid Waste Complex and landfill, which has been capped and inactive for years but requires strict adherence to quality control standards and protocols set forth by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and both State and County health

Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope For Youth’s dedicated team of staff, volunteers and interns facilitates positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. The non-profit runs what they call a Kinship Caregiver Program, which helps create a better Long Island by offering a child a pathway to a better future. Sadly, children may be removed from their homes for many reasons. Nationally, the four key reasons are neglect, parental drug use, a caretaker’s inability to cope and physical abuse. Equally as sad, Long Island, like many communities across the country, is in dire need of foster parents for children from birth to the age of 18, whether these caregivers have informal or formal custody of children. Such care isn’t always provided by unrelated individuals. When provided by a relative, it’s called “kinship care.” Kinship foster parents must provide full-time protection and nurturing of a child, as well as a stable and safe home. They must be above the age of 21 and meet a number of additional eligibility requirements. Designated kinship foster parents receive various types of financial support. They also receive family services, case management support and other supportive services.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County also provides support groups for both adults and children, plus monthly social activities for families. ‘Shed The Meds’ Drug Take Back Day On April 16th Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Massapequa Village Mayor Danny Pearl announced that the Town and Village, in partnership with Drug Free Long Island and the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD), will host a ‘Shed the Meds’ event at Massapequa Park Village Hall on Saturday, April 16th from 10:00am – 1:00pm. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with Massapequa Park Mayor Danny Pearl, Drug Free LI and the Nassau County Police Department on this important initiative to keep prescription drugs out of the wrong hands. Through proper disposal of old medications, we
can prevent them from contaminating the environment through improper disposal and also keep them out of the hands of young people.” In cooperation with Drug Free Long Island, and the Nassau County Police Department, the Town and Village will host this event at Massapequa Park Village Hall, in the back parking lot. A pair of Massapequa High School students have advanced to the next round of the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Matt McAuley and Hayley Tan can proudly call themselves National Merit finalists. The two students, who were announced as semifinalists in September, were among approximately 15,000 students nationwide to be named finalists. They moved one step closer to
potentially earning Merit Awards, which includes scholarship money. “It is the result of a lot of hard work paying off,” Matt said. “My parents are definitely proud of that.” Added Hayley, “It’s an honor and I’m very excited about it. I couldn’t have foreseen this.” The students are both still in the college selection process for the fall. Matt is looking to study computer science and Hayley wants
to pursue a degree in neuroscience. “Matt and Hayley are two hard-working students who have demonstrated academic excellence throughout their Massapequa school experience,” high school Principal Barbara Lowell said. “It is no surprise that they have qualified as National Merit Scholarship finalists. We know that they will do great things in their future.”
Town Launches New ‘Art In The Park’ Initiative
Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites local artists to participate in the Town’s new ‘Art in the Park’ program, which invites artists and artisans to display and sell their handcrafted goods. Applications are now available for the event which will be held on Saturday, May 21st at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park & Beach in Oyster Bay. “We are calling on all local artists and artisans to fill out an application today to take part in this great opportunity to
showcase their items,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “The free event on May 21st will also feature live music, food trucks and activities for kids, making it a fun day for the whole family.” Participants must be 18 or older, and display and sell only their original pieces. No commercial or mass-produced items are permitted. Artists must supply their own 10x10 canopy and additional items required for their space. Additional details and associated costs are provided on the
application, available on the Town’s website. Art in the Park is run by the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division. The program focuses on hand-crafted goods, including ceramics, watercolors, glass, jewelry, wood, leather, sculpture and more. Following an extensive search, the Massapequa School District Board of Education has appointed its next educational leader. During the March 3rd Board meeting, veteran educator Dr. William Brennan was appointed Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2022. With more than 22 years of educational experience, including 10 as a Central Office administrator, Dr. Brennan joins Massapequa from the Farmingdale School District, where he currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent for Innovation and Organizational Development. Through his years as an educator, he has served as a science teacher, professional developer, athletic coach, district administrator, leadership coach and adjunct professor. “We are very excited to welcome Dr. Brennan to our school district,” Board President Kerry Wachter said. “Dr. Brennan is a leader of leaders. He understands and shares the values of Massapequa, is an experienced educator and is respected among his colleagues. Most importantly, he is a relationship builder who will utilize the talents of our staff to achieve districtwide shared goals. We look forward to working with him to establish a vision for Massapequa’s future.” During his time in Farmingdale, Dr. Brennan has achieved innumerable accomplishments, including leading the district through a comprehensive strategic planning process, adding many new and innovative course offerings, expanding opportunities for students to pursue Advanced Placement and college-level courses, and creating systems for realtime access to academic and social-emotional learning support. Dr. Brennan has also led Farmingdale through a transformation around school safety and security across all buildings, chaired the Legislative Action Committee, and improved internal and external communications. “I am thankful to the Board for the opportunity to lead Massapequa and continue the tradition of achievement,” Dr. Brennan said. “I believe that meaningful change only happens when you
first connect to people’s hearts, and that begins with building strong relationships, empathetic listening and compassion. I look forward to being a hands-on and visible member of the school community.” Dr. Brennan received his Doctor of Education from Fordham University, his Master of Science from Long Island University and his Bachelor of Science from Marist College. He has garnered numerous professional awards and recognitions, published several articles in educational publications, presented on various educational topics nationwide and served on several professional organizations. He resides in Bay Shore with his wife and three children. As part of the search, the Board of Education engaged the services of District Wise Consulting, took feedback from all constituent groups, held community forums and utilized a community survey to narrow its search from 30 applicants.

Guest Speaker At Temple Sinai of Massapequa On Tuesday evening March 22, Michael Geller, Director of Media Relations and Communications from the American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) spoke with members and friends of Temple Sinai of Massapequa, providing an update on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Touching on Jewish historic roots in Ukraine, he focused on the JDC’s current emergency response to the humanitarian catastrophe, often coordinating with other Jewish organizations. Beginning in 1914 the JDC was created to save Jews’ lives globally and build Jewish life. Even before World War II the JDC created a strong infrastructure in Ukraine and surrounding countries specifically to provide humanitarian assistance to the Jewish people and Jewish institutions. JDC worked clandestinely during the Soviet period and after the fall of the Soviet Union. They created a vast infrastructure providing the coordination and logistics necessary
MICHAEL GELLER to accomplish the task of safely moving millions of refugees and caring for those remaining. Not only do they support and care for needy Jews they also rebuild Jewish communities. Mr. Geller discussed the critical work in which the JDC is involved in Ukraine. Through their 18 service centers, staff and more than 3,000 volunteers, JDC is evacuating people and their pets who need to leave Ukraine, providing safe passage, taking care of their physical, financial, emotional and spiritual needs, helping to integrate them in new communities
and helping with longterm planning. They continue to support tens of thousands of Jews who have chosen to remain in their homeland, with food, medicine, emergency support, communication, and connectivity. Those of us listening to Mr. Geller took to heart what was said to him by a volunteer: “We worry like they are own family.” The JDC is doing the work taught to us by the Mishnah: “….anyone who saves a life it is as if s/he saves the entire world.” One of the many important questions asked during our discussion with Mr. Geller was: “What can we do?” If you would like to contribute to the work the JDC is accomplishing in Ukraine, their website provides the opportunity to earmark your contribution: https://www.jdc.org .
