Four students from the Massapequa School District had their artwork selected 2019 Legislative Student Art Exhibit. Their work was featured in the 29th annual show, which was held from Feb. 25 to March 7 at the Legislative Office Building in Albany. From the Massapequa High School Ames Campus, ninth-graders Olivia Cristadoro and Madison Mustafa had their fall-themed work featured. They completed their projects under the direction of art teacher Tildy Becker-DeLuca. East Lake Elementary School fourth-graders Kyra Maddock and Michael Ippolito showcased their comic character paintings. Their pieces were selected for the show by their art teacher, Patti Krakoff.

Love is the most cherished gift that life has to offer. It is also one of life’s greatest mysteries with myriad questions to ponder. Your heart starts to pound, your palms get sweaty, your mind drifts to that person day and night and you may be exhilarated and scared all at the same time. That is the beginning stage of romantic love. we may not even like someone we love, but we would still run to their side or have their back at the drop of a hat (even if we have a scowl on our face while doing it). There are many forms of love. We love our parents, siblings, children, friends, animal companions and life partners. We can love looking at a rainbow or a sunset; and we may love God if that is how we choose to express our faith. Love is not to be judged, but experienced. The beauty of love is that it pulls us out of time and space, and brings us into the present moment. It also helps us in our growth and development as human beings. You cannot grow and expand without experiencing love in all its forms. Love can also be as simple as loving yourself, which is essential before you can love anything or anyone else. The old saying, “You cannot give away what you do not have,” has never been truer. No matter who you are, know that you are not deficient in love, because you are love. Our endless capacity for love is the greatest superpower we possess.

How we define it, measure it, express it, give it and receive it is instrumental in defining the parameters by which we live. We’ve all heard people say things like, “I want to be defined by this,” or “I don’t want to be defined by that.” You are not defined by past mistakes, nor are you defined by what you percieve as your greatest worldly achievements. We are all defined by our ability to give and receive love. You may at times question the love in your life, particularly as it pertains to romantic love. If you are in a new relationship that is still blossoming, enjoy the ride and know that in order for love to grow, it needs to mature into a deeper, more comfortable love. Sir Harley Houndstooth III needed the help of fifth-graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District after he became stranded on a deserted island. Fortunately, they were able to rise to the occasion. As part of the Great Desert Island STEAM Challenge, a series of hands-on activities exploring science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics, students had to build a hut for the fictional character to sleep in at night. Magnet and STEAM teacher Jennifer Tand provided each group with only a limited supply of materials including construction paper, pipe cleaners, sticks and straws. Students had to work together to come up with a shelter that could withstand wind and rain.

Artichoke Pie By Deanna N. of Islip

Deanna of Islip says her family's Artichoke Pie is typically served as a side (vegetable) dish, but is delicious heated up the next day for lunch, too! "My mom, Connie, would make this Artichoke Pie recipe as one of the many dishes at holiday gatherings in her home," says Deanna. "Mom passed away last year, just before Easter, at the age of 99. Her recipes will always be a part of our family celebrations as we honor her memory." What You Will Need 1 14oz can Artichoke hearts (packed in water) ½ lb. mozzarella cut into 1 inch chunks 2 eggs beaten ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper ¼ tsp garlic powder or 1 clove finely

chopped & sautéed in oil ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese 2 tbs. milk 2 homemade or frozen 9 inch pie crusts Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine diced artichoke hearts, mozzarella, eggs, salt, pepper, garlic parmesan cheese and milk into a large bowl. Mix well. Pour into bottom pie crust. Cover with top crust, pressing to seal the edges. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes (ovens and preference varies). Recipe makes 6-8 servings. Enjoy! In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! Massapequa High School’s Team ECHO remains steadfast in its commitment to raising awareness about local and global environmental concerns. The club recently hosted a pair of guest speakers to address specific issues and tell students what they could do to help. Team ECHO, led by adviser Robert Hempel, welcomed Christine Pfoertner on March 12. She is the science and outreach coordinator for the South Shore Estuary Reserve and discussed the harmful effects of plastics on the environment. Officers from Team ECHO also had a PowerPoint presentation about the negative impacts of plastics on marine life. Health teacher Michael LaBella talked to students about

initiatives in Massapequa to help the environment, and spoke about the new Go Green class which teaches students about environmental responsibility, how to implement sustainable living practices and how to be smart consumers. The presentation was part of the high school’s Awareness Week, an annual initiative with workshops about physical and mental health. This was the first year environmental health was included. It ended with a quiz about plastics. Students who guessed correctly received metal straws, an item that they could reuse to cut down on plastic use. David Black, a professor from Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, presented a

climate change seminar on March 20. Pointing to a chart that showed a steep rise in average global temperatures since the mid-1800s, he spoke about the history of climate change and the reasons behind it. Professor Black discussed the human impact on climate and addressed different myths and misconceptions. He also talked about the potential impacts on Long Island, particularly along the South Shore and shared ways the people can help solve the problem. “It’s important to make people aware of what can happen in the future,” Team ECHO president Catherine Gambardella said. “Every little thing that we do now can make a big difference.”

Student-Led STEAM Fourth-graders regularly participate in STEAM challenges in Meredith Marin’s class at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The activities focus on science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. In March, Ms. Marin added a new twist. She asked students to come up with their own STEAM challenges. Each child had to create a concept, determine a materials

list and a time limit for building, and define the criteria for success. On March 22, the class participated in its first student-designed challenge. The class split into four groups, and each team had to build an octopus that could float in water. Materials included toothpicks, straws, Popsicle sticks, tin foil and brass fasteners. The groups earned more points the longer their octopi floated. Ms. Marin said

that upcoming challenges include building a wigwam, which connects to the fourth-grade social studies curriculum, and making a miniature basketball hoop and shooting a ball into it, as many students are passionate about sports. She said that the purpose of having students create activities was to get them to think outside of the box, and was very impressed with their imaginative ideas.

Mastering Makerspace At Berner When students visit the Berner Middle School library, they are invited to bring their imaginations. As part of the Massapequa School District’s Makerspace initiative, the library media center is full of resources that provide stimulation for young minds. Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades are welcome to use the Makerspace materials during homeroom, lunch periods and afterschool. Library media specialists

Laurie Martucci-Walsh and Julie Rogers foster an unstructured learning environment where students can explore their creativity. Power Clix are magnetic pieces of different shapes and sizes that snap together. Books give suggestions on different building projects such as airplanes, animals and buildings. Contraptions, a wooden building block kit, is another popular item. Makey Makey is a circuitry kit that allows students to

hook up wires to ordinary objects to play music. The library is also equipped with Dot and Dash robots, Ozobots, Snap Circuits and 3D pens. “The Makerspace items are used in both an instructional-type setting and also for students to have free play,” Ms. Rogers said. “We want to give them time to explore on their own, according to their own interests and ideas.” Many teachers bring their classes to the library

to use the Makerspace resources for different projects. Ms. MartucciWalsh and Ms. Rogers collaborate with the teachers to find materials that best suit their lessons. The library media center will host the first Makerspace Expo on

Saturday, April 6, from 9 a.m. to noon, coinciding with the Science Discovery Fair at Berner. Several students will serve as ambassadors to teach interested visitors about the Makerspace resources. They have been working closely with the library

media specialists to become experts. “They are preparing themselves now to be the be masters,” Ms. MartucciWalsh said. “Anyone is welcome to stroll through our doors and visit the Makerspace Expo.”

Renee Susman, the library media specialist at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, was named School Librarian of the Year by Nassau BOCES. She has worked in the district for 25 years and became East Lake’s school librarian in 1996. Ms. Susman was nominated by her fellow library media specialists in the district. They cited her enthusiasm and passion for her profession and her students, as well as her knowledge, dedication and innovation. Before the elementary level, she worked in college and government libraries. “You can’t fake the genuine passion I have for what I do,” she said. “I’m constantly reinventing myself because it’s all about the kids.” Ms. Susman embraced the addition of Makerspace to the elementary library program in 2016, an initiative that incorporated the 21st Century skills of critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and problemsolving. She created thematic lessons to make meaningful use of new “plugged and unplugged” resources and engage students in the discovery process. With her self-described “weird, wacky and wild” personality, Ms. Susman excels at capturing her students’ attention. She strives to create a childcentered environment where everyone is treated fairly. Ms. Susman added the libraries are an essential component of any school where students learn necessary research skills along with respect and responsibility.
